  • Parshat Noach describes the extreme violence that led to God's decision to destroy the world with a flood. This violence is referred to as "chamas" in Hebrew, a term that bears an eerie resemblance to "Hamas." In light of recent devastating attacks by Hamas on Israel, Rabbi Fohrman and Imu Shalev engaged in a discussion, exploring how to react to a world that is suddenly filled with violence.

“Deliver them that are drawn unto death; and those that are ready to be slain wilt thou forbear to rescue? If thou sayest: 'Behold, we knew not this', doth not He that weigheth the hearts consider it? And He that keepeth thy soul, doth not He know it? And shall not He render to every man according to his works?” (Pro 24:11-12, JPS)

The violence of Sodom and Gomorrah was similar to the violence of the flood. These two events are connected by the measurements of the Ark and the number of people that Abraham negotiated to save Sodom.
I had to remember this - this is the connection between the times of Noah and the times of Sodom and Gomorrah. Gematria of "the waters of Noah" [in Hebrew, 'mei noach'] = 108. The gematria for violence in Genesis 6:11 is 108. Take Abraham's negotiated "righteous men" numbers and multiply them together 50 x 45 x 40 x 30 x 20 x 10 = 540,000,000. (108 x 5,000,000) The ark is to be 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high, 450,000 (300x50x30). 45 is a factor for each total.
