  • While staying at the Memories Jibacoa Hotel (midway between Havana and Varadero and on the coast) we rode a 35 km loop to the former Town of Hershey renamed Camilo Cienfuegos, after one of the leaders of the Revolution.
Milton Hershey became enamored with Cuba during a visit in 1916 and by 1918 had built a factory town with homes, free public schools, and many of the same amenities found in its Pennsylvania namesake. Hershey expanded his holdings to eventually include, 60,000 acres, five raw sugar mills, a peanut oil plant, a henequen plant (an agave plant species), four electric plants, and a standard gauge railroad with 251 miles of track.
All of that is now gone and in ruins with the exception of part of the electric railway which we saw in action.
Residents still refer to the town as Hershey (pronounced as AIR-see) and Hershey signs still hang at the town’s train station.
We did our best to capture the current state of the town and its railroad. I hope you find it interesting.

It is a nice ride and a visit to the past times of the Hershey family and US economic involvement in Cuba. You can ride farther inland as the highway is a good road.
