This is an absolute beautiful job on this underrated. Track. It's so good that I'd wish you cover the entire FFVII OST. That game is truly something special. So depressing and beautiful.
David, I'm simply blown away with every video you release. Your approach(es) to every thing you play to is (are) so innovative and rich. You make so many subtle changes that make everything sound new and fresh, I just never get bored listening to a song.
I really compare your your approach to composition to the drummer of the band HRVRD. (Formerly Harvard) He and you both come across as a percussionist more than a straight 'drummer'. He's got a similar ability to add or take away a little something and achieve a complete reinvention of the division of the beat, and you do the same. I never know what's coming, but, as soon as it happens, I know that that's exactly what was called for.
said 'oh shit!' out loud when i saw you uploaded this. love the takes on the VII soundtrack! it was one of the first albums i sought out as a youngster.
Lol at that FFVII text box. I really like the simpler groove on the hats, and feel like the other ideas, while matching the feel of the song, kind of depart from the groove a bit too much for my tastes. Having said that, I think the video would've been boring if you'd stuck to the first groove for too long, and love seeing how you can turn around the song into being a new piece. Sounds dank, man
OVeR478 I think about half a days worth of practice is enough. He's a really good drummer, so I don't think it will take long for him to get it right ;)
I've only ever worked on one book and that's the OG: 'Stick Control for the Snare Drummer'. It's really improved my playing a lot. The best practice for me though, has been doing these videos. Listening back to yourself is the best way to hear your weaknesses and to find out what to work on
You're very inspiring man ! Love how tasteful and tight ! Ever check out mark guiliana ?! You may appreciate him alot ! He talks about micro timing ! Anyways, thanks for the awesome videos and inspiration!
dieyoung That's entirely presumptuous. Bad technique can definitely lead to broken sticks. But every pair has a finite lifespan, and it's lengthened and shortened my more than 1 variable. Genre of music being the next most impacting one. Another being what's called for in the music. A drummer in a marching band that plays a song involving many hits to the rim in a forte section, those sticks aren't going to last all season.
You're absolutely correct. Of course there are many reasons for broken sticks, bad technique being only one of them. But, if you're constantly breaking sticks, and you have decent quality wood (not those 50 packs of sticks for like 50 bucks), I've noticed with my students the majority of the time it is because they choke up on the stick too much and don't let it reverberate freely. I've also noticed this is a good diagnosis for cramping and tightness in the hands.
So, for those of us who are uninformed... is this an original song that you wrote? Because many of your performances are videos of you performing with other people's original material. If you wrote this and sequenced it out, then recorded a video of you drumming with it... we'd kinda like to know and understand that. Or, whatever the case is - facts are good. ;)
Came for Pepe Silvia, stayed for awesome stuff like this!
Same here
A masterclass in subtlety, nuance and technique. Love this man.
Thank you! :)
I feel like you're saving "One Winged Angel" for a RUclips milestone
your playing is inspiring. please consider compiling these mashups into an album my dude, you've breathed new life into these tracks.
Quickly becoming my favourite drummer on youtube.
This will be a rap beat in like 3 months
When I heard those first four notes I immediately thought trap beat
Yeah its perfect 1.5% speed
Have you ever heard of Mega Ran? He has an entire album where he remixes and raps over FF7 songs. They're great. Album is called Black Materia.
this
Thought the same exact thing
Your groove is absolutely impeccable dude, every video you upload is an inspirational goldmine.
You breathed so much life into such a dreary track. Love your rhythmic sensibility and dynamics man.
This is an absolute beautiful job on this underrated. Track. It's so good that I'd wish you cover the entire FFVII OST. That game is truly something special. So depressing and beautiful.
simplicity and perfection. great work as always!
That metric modulation at 2:38 got me so shook man. And the fade out. So good.
I had a huge smile on my face listening to this!

Pumped for FF7 remake
I found this channel about 15 Min ago and I’m totally amazed by this guy!
Been watching Hey Arnold recently and I hear your drums in my head all the time man.
said 'oh shit!' out loud when i saw you uploaded this. love the takes on the VII soundtrack! it was one of the first albums i sought out as a youngster.
We meet again, dear Melancholy

I love you for this, you’ve combined one of my favorite games ever and drumming! Amazing, keep it up!
love the way you did the rides, good shit.
Yeeees. More game stuff would be awesome! Keep up the great work dude.
Freaking love this. Well done!
This is fantastic!
0:28 cool how the snare compresses the cymbal into a kind of pulse. Awesome playing :-)
Zero dislikes. That's how it should stay
Very awesome ideas and technique! :O And i like the slow buildup!

You have so much control with your movements. All of the sounds are really clean. How many times did u play this song to get it right?
OVeR478 I think about half a days worth of practice is enough. He's a really good drummer, so I don't think it will take long for him to get it right ;)
Thanks. I think this was a rare first take. I was really vibing at practice yesterday
David Dockery, that's really amazing. We love seeing your videos man. I might make one your videos my ringtone.
simplicity is the key
Digging these PS1 songs... you should bang out some PaRappa the Rapper lol
PaRappa the Rapper. That was frustratingly fun. Would love to see real drums over that.
How is this not a thing? BUMP
Tasteful phrasing.
Great playing! Can you do Under the Rotting Pizza as well? I think that track has one of the most distinctive drums in the soundtrack.
SICK
2:57 is so nice
Beast
Niiiceee you fw ffvii.
Dope
you should totally tackle some tracks off of the rayman 2 soundtrack
Cover the Dog Of Wisdom!!! You know the dog in the airplane speaking nonsense?
Amazing as always!! Could you suggest a book for studying and practicing drums?
I've only ever worked on one book and that's the OG: 'Stick Control for the Snare Drummer'. It's really improved my playing a lot. The best practice for me though, has been doing these videos. Listening back to yourself is the best way to hear your weaknesses and to find out what to work on
The font was a clutch touch my guy
You got a new sub man! Awesome stuff! But cam ask you to do a FF9 song maybe Terra or memoria or something? That be awesome.
How many years of jazz drumming have you had?! Your work's amazing btw ♥
What mic set up do you use to record these videos?
A Zoom H2N
David Dockery wow! That's great quality for a pocket recorder
You're very inspiring man ! Love how tasteful and tight ! Ever check out mark guiliana ?! You may appreciate him alot ! He talks about micro timing ! Anyways, thanks for the awesome videos and inspiration!
I can't tell the difference between the new pair of sticks and the old one.
Please please PLEASE do Simpsons Steamed Hams sketch on drums!!!
nicccce
Do Vulfpeck pls
What does these new sticks do? Is it more harder to break?
Nope they are just a bit a bit differently weighted to the ones I've been playing. They feel good!
You shouldn't be breaking sticks that means your technique is bad and you're not getting a full should

what sticks do you use bro?
Usually 8A , but I've been trying out the Lil John Roberts Philly Style stick lately and I really like it

Nope, this is a song from the Final Fantasy VII video game soundtrack. I love the music and very few songs on it have drums, so I like to add to them!
You should turn your drums up in the mix, I wanna hear you bustin’ out!
You could play in the pocket for hours and it would still sound interesting, dude.
First!
Also great stuff as always lol
Hello
Do a cover of Whiplash, except only cover the places where no on is playing
do Eminem's trump freestyle w/ drums
Why despair when you can groove?
Watch ×1.25
Andy Murray play drums 😂
