The film is actually a metaphor. The main character is an alcoholic. And when he is drunk, he becomes that merry fellow whose sea is knee-deep. In the main character's house there is a 24-hour store selling alcohol with home delivery. And in the film, he told Cameron Diaz that he had known this “friend” since school. The doctor he consults directly says that masks are just a metaphor. And when he wakes up in the morning after a night of adventure, he seems to have a hangover and each time his condition worsens. That's it guys.
Can we talk about how his powers were so potentially lethal but he never actually hurt anyone. That alone goes to show you that his humanity was still intact

You know, in hindsight, I'm very VERY surprised my mom let me watch this as a kid, especially with other stuff she definitely didn't let me watch at the same age range, but I can't imagine not having grown up with this movie having such a big impact on me.
