    tbh I think you would be better testing the 2500k - 3570k as that's the generation most people are still on, and they are a popular choice for secondhand builds due to good overclocking basically been guaranteed on both the 2500k and 3570k

      I look forward to it. I looked at Tom's Hardware's CPU hierarchy and noticed that the cpu you were testing was 3 tiers down. Informative results nonetheless for those owning 1st gen core intel cpus.

      My i5 2500k was holding my sli 980's @ 1440p 144hz. My i7 6700k is getting so much more fps.

    I still have my i7 920 paired with my gtx980ti and still running games over 60fps ultra settings 1440p so no bottleneck here with a 1st gen i7

      yeah no cpu upgrade needed since the resolution fully utilize the gpu

    • @SoIoCreep
      @SoIoCreep 8 лет назад +12

      I guarantee you if you were to switch that i7 920 out for something newer, you would get more FPS. Meaning your cpu is holding back the true performance of your 980ti. Just because it games over 60fps doesn't mean there is no bottleneck.

    • @Djinnie0o0
      @Djinnie0o0 8 лет назад +13

      +SoIoCreep i already switched to a 6700k and i don't notice a single fps difference meaning the 920 doesn't bottleneck the TI at all. Btw my 920 was clocked at 4.4

    why are you only getting 111fps in doom? I am getting 180 - 200 fps with my core I5 760 @ 3.5GHz , 16gb ddr3 1866 ram and a GTX980. Yes I agree my CPU is bottlenecking my GPU. My CPU is getting really hot and used a whole lot more since I changed from a GTX680 to a GTX980 two and a half months ago. I'm going to upgrade as soon as possible though. My CPU is old now and my Corsair H50 can no longer cool my CPU properly anymore.

    So I currently have a GTX 750ti and an AMD FX 8320 with a 1080p 144hz monitor. I bought the cpu+gpu as part of my budget entry-level PC build. I now have enough money to upgrade the GPU to the new GTX 1070 knowing that I will experience a decent amount of bottle-necking until I convince my wife to let me spend another couple hundred dollars to balance it out. My question is, what is the cheapest CPU that I can buy that won't cause a noticeable bottleneck (no fps counter, just purely feel). I'm a long time console gamer who can live with a minimum of 60fps but one of the major titles I play is Arma 3 and I know that my gpu upgrade won't solve the fps problem I'm having there.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    • @TheGoodOldGamer
      @TheGoodOldGamer  8 лет назад

      +ShardEye honestly don't get the 1070 if 60 FPS works for you. I'd get an RX 480 or if and I stress the word "if" the GTX 1060 launches at $250 that'd be a viable option too (don't spend $280-300 on the damn thing.) minimum cpu I'd recommend is what I have the 4690k. If you want something that'll last a few years get an i7 though. Since used 4790ks aren't much cheaper the 6700k is your best bet. As the benchmarks showed even crysis 3 benefits from an 8 thread cpu and that's a 2013 title.

    • @ShardEye
      @ShardEye 8 лет назад

      Well what I meant by saying I could live with 60fps I mean I would really love to be able to get anywhere near the full 144fps that my monitor allows but I recognize that it would come with quite a price tag so for now I would be willing to settle. Still, I consider the 1070 to be a bit of an investment towards bringing my build more up to speed. I'd rather get the 1070 now and upgrade my cpu when I can spare the cash than split the difference and end up needing to upgrade both soon after. Thanks for the super quick reply though!

    Tbh, unless you're aiming for the highest fps, you're perfectly fine pairing an i7 920 with a 1070. As long as I'm getting 60fps, I don't care since my monitor is 60hz. I'm also on a 2560x1080 resolution, so the gpu is put to work more than at 1080p.

      The i7 6700k is a skylake processor. If I am right, you can not pair it with an x99 motherboard. The supported motherboards are in socket LGA 1151. So you have to buy a z170 motherboard.

    Even 6 years AFTER this video im still using this lynnfield platform, after testing i found out xeons are better and way cheaper than i7-870/i7-875k processors (which are same chips but better binning). Problem you mentioned was the poor dram overclocking performance, that was solved with xeons like x3470. These have way better memory controller and i can run them even at 2400mhz 16 gigabytes stable with CL10-11-10-30 timings. Also these xeons seem to overclock higher, around 4.2ghz at 1.4 volts. If anyone has P55 or H55 motherboard laying around cheapest option is to get x3440 which goes for around 15usd / euro. You can even get Motherboard+ddr3 ram+cpu for 50usd and play whatever fps on low competitive settings at 144fps, which is an insane deal.

    How do you think this factors in with newer APIs like Vulkan and DX12 that are designed to reduce cpu overhead and fully utilize gpu power? Are we going to trend towards beefier CPUs with more cores or do you think we'll start seeing CPU power becoming less and less relevant for gaming along with a far greater focus on GPU power?

    • @TheGoodOldGamer
      @TheGoodOldGamer  8 лет назад

      +Tony Romaniuk Well with Doom getting Vulkan API update today I'll be putting that to the test, but honestly like I said in the video with consoles opting for weaker CPUs with higher core counts and Vulkan/DX12 being multi-thread heavy more cores will probably be the future.

    Great Video!
    A few quick questions:
    What is the program you're running in the background that shows the GPU / CPU / FPS performance ?
    I recently purchased a gtx 1070, upgraded from a 750ti. I'm still using an old 6120 AMD cpu w/ 10GB of ram. My setup is mainly for blizzard games, but will likely expand into BF1, possibly titanfall 2.
    What CPU/Motherboard Combo would you recommend with a cash cap of $500-600? I need to make the upgrade like yesterday.
    Thanks in advance!

    • @emilewat4174
      @emilewat4174 8 лет назад

      I recently upgraded from a fx-8350 to a i5 6600k with a z170 mb and 16gb of ddr4 for 600$ CAD so about 500$ USD. If you don't wish to buy new ram you can go for a i5 4690k with a overclockable mb if you wish. That would last for a long time and you'll see a huge upgrade in cpu intensive games :)

    how about 1440p ? Please test that too if possible (at least in a couple of games) as it is becoming a new sweet spot for gamers. I assume it will be more gpu bound in that resolution but if you could test that too I'll appreciate it.

    • @TheGoodOldGamer
      @TheGoodOldGamer  8 лет назад

      +Ramin Zakariaee 1440p may becoming more popular, but the high refresh panels aren't as the cheapest ones out there are still damn near $500. For high refresh on a reasonable budget 1080p is still king.

    Just because you get a bottlenecked cpu doesn't mean that it won't play ok. Proper benchmarking is the only way to know for sure, I use Unigine Heaven to test. The max score I can get with my i5 4670K is just under 4200 points regardless of the graphics cards I've tried so far, including with crossfire. The Xtreme present is a 1080p bench so ideal if that is the resolution you play at.
    4K benches are a different story as the higher the graphics settings the more the card will come into play rather than the processor.
    The i5 was benched at 4.57ghz and bottlenecks an R9 390 if I overclocked more than 10mhz on core or memory. Once there is a bottleneck the benchmark score will drop off, lowering the clock brings it back. Some people will find underclocking the card will improve performance if there is a bottleneck at stock settings.

    Even with Vsync enabled on my 144hz monitor, I don't even notice that much, if any input lag or stuttering on games that run at at least above 100fps.

    • @TheGoodOldGamer
      @TheGoodOldGamer  8 лет назад

      +Raymond The Crow yeah over 100fps input lag is gone. That's why my personally goal is to hit over 100 on all games. This video just shows that's not possible on an i5 cpu at this time. I'll be getting a 4790k for part 3 of our CPU showdown series anyway. I'm betting that'll cut the mustard.

    or people will have no reason to buy their stagnant offerings .

    • @TheGoodOldGamer

      +Tico2858 It's basically the same as the GTX 970. The i5 2500K is probably your best answer as they go for $110-$120 on eBay. The i3 6100 may even be a better solution as its more power efficient and will hold its own in most titles against an OC 2500k.

    I just made the decision to change my 1st i7 @4ghz to an x99 5820k in early 2017 (or something similar) simply due to the fact my x58 platform has lasted from late 09 till now and technically will still last until I move away from 1200p gaming.

      +Blair Robinson Glad to help you out Blair. Go with the 6800k. The improvements with broadwell aren't hugely, but those little improvements help over time. Or honestly wait for Zen. Should be out early 2017. At the very least should drop Intel's prices a bit.

    • @pceimpulsive
      @pceimpulsive 8 лет назад

      +The Good Old Gamer (TheGoodOldGamer) u thought about it but the 6800k is so expensive. I also intend to see what zen offers as well... partly why waiting till early 17'
      I think it'd be a little silly (unless you don't have one) to drop cash on a new pc with the market so in flux right now.
      from what I've seen the 6800k and 5820k clock similarly, and I won't need the 40 lanes as I doubt I'll double Pascal Titan ever :P

    • @TheGoodOldGamer
      @TheGoodOldGamer  8 лет назад

      I'd honestly recommend the 6700K and recommend saving money on both CPU and Motherboard all the while getting the latest architecture, but if you're determined to get an X99 system, you're better off with Broadwell over Haswell.

    • @pceimpulsive

    your 4690k would never have bottlenecked your gtx 970, the 970 simply is not good enough for every game at 100+hz

    • @TheGoodOldGamer
      @TheGoodOldGamer  8 лет назад

      +The Elitist The 970 can be held back by the 4690k even overclocked. The metrics are right in front of you in the gameplay footage. When GPU is not at 100% and the cpu is you are CPU limited. Any GPU should be able to hit over 100fps if settings are low enough. The only time they won't is if the cpu/ram can push that many frames. Check this out www.techspot.com/review/1263-gears-of-war-4-benchmarks/page4.html any cpu without 8 threads or higher are a major bottleneck. I5's are toast for high fps gaming. Sure they'll hit 60, but are waste with cards over $300. I7 4c/8t is only $300 makes sense to at least use a $300 cpu with $400+ GPUs. The numbers don't lie whether you like it or not.

      I would prefer a good i7 950 to a 2700k.
      It first of all the price and these CPUs are still beasts today.
      Here in Germany u can get an i7 950 in a good condition for 40 Euros.
      The i7 2600k is around 150-200 euros.

      and even if it is a 25% gap; the 950 is still capble of playing all of the new games in ultra at 60+ fps.....so why should i care about 60 or 75 fps; both running smooth so what.
      if the 2700k would the 100% faster it would be a wise choice but paying 100-150 bucks more for a 25% faster cpu is none-sense

    I know this is different to your 144Mhz info, but I essentially need to maintain 90fps on 2160x1200, will the 1080 be overkill for my CPU (even though it's overclocked to 4.56Mhz, would love your input as nobody seems to cover this..

    • @TheGoodOldGamer

      +VaultDweller no you should be good. First off I've proved that an i7 2600k is superior when it comes to minimum FPS to more modern i5s, so your 3770k will do fine. Over powering the GPU side should also help ensure minimums stay higher. My only recommendation would be spring $60-$70 on faster ram. This will also help keep minimum FPS higher. Ddr3 2400 is inexpensive right now.

    So I managed to win an Asus GTX 1080 Strix from a local IT sites Christmas competition and it's going replace my current R9 390. The thing is, my current CPU is a ye old LGA1366 hexcore Xeon X5660 and I kinda thought that my current Radeon would be about on the limit what my CPU could feasibly handle (and it handles this card just fine). Now I have overclocked the shit out of this brick, currently running 4.44GHz @ 1.35v and I'm kinda wondering if the higher core and thread count could actually salvage something, especially when running DX12 or Vulkan games.
    My current platform will get upgraded once I actually have the money to do so (plus I'm kinda waiting what Zen actually has to offer and at what price), but I'd be interested in seeing some test results with these older Xeons, which are in all honesty still pretty kickass bricks, especially for their age.

    Hey man, I have an i7 870, and I'm planning to get a 60hz 2560 by 1080 screen. I need a GPU to last me 3 years from now (only 60 fps), do I need a 1060 or a 1070? I saw a benchmark of an i7 870 w/ GTX 1060 @ 1920x1080 getting 70-80 fps (BF1). I'm scared that it will only be exactly 60 fps once at 2560 by 1080, which means it won't last me 3 years (since I want a minimum of 60 fps). Do you think I should get a 1070, or will the 1060 keep me at a constant 60 fps @ 2560 by 1080 for 3 years?

    Great effort, I was looking for this kind of video for a long time & it's pop out in my home screen. I have xeon w3530 2.8 GHz identical to i7 930 GHz in dell precision T3500. I will upgrade it soon because it can be overclocked, even if I overclock it I'll not get the complete benefit of GTX 1060. So I get a question? I'm looking for skylake platform. I had never overclocked any cpu, ram or gpu in my life & I will not overclock so which cpu and mobo good enough to pair it with gtx 1060. I'm talking about only 6th gen processors with 1151 socket only. Here is my opinion which one is best match:
    i3 & B150(in future upgrade to i5 or may be i7) low budget right now.
    i3 & H170(in future upgrade to i5 or may be i7) low budget right now.
    Need your honest opinion as you have given in this video to explain us, I haven't included Z170 as I told you earlier I don't do overclocking or I'm not into it.

    • @TheGoodOldGamer
      @TheGoodOldGamer  8 лет назад

      +Jesse Suominen For 4K the GTX 1080 is the best option right now. The 1070 will not be able to deliver 60fps without going to medium and possibly low details

    • @TheGoodOldGamer
      @TheGoodOldGamer  8 лет назад

      Since 4K is limited to 60hz at the moment the 2500K would be fine. Remember I said in the start of the video you can get away with older/weaker CPUs with lower refresh targets. Resolution has no effect on CPU load.

    If I buy RX 480 (8GB) to use with my old i5-750 (No OC) playing with Medium/High settings in 1600*900 it's worth to pay? & bottleneck much? I don't want to spend a lot of money to big PC upgrade for this time.

    When including Crysis footage you really need to upload in higher resolution to get more bandwidth. The grass looks like a big smear and hurts the eye.

    Will an I7 875k (not OC) bottleneck a Gtx 1060 4gb sc?

    • @jerrybeals3499
      @jerrybeals3499 8 лет назад

      I have a 1060 with a gtx 970 for physics. got the 1060 as a surprise gift and haven't gotten around to getting rid of the 970 due to not being sure what to keep. for gaming only I'm doing fine. I even added a usb 3.0 via a pci extender to play with my rift. I only have 1080p dual 25 inch wide screen monitors so staying within that resolution I have been very happy. btw I also have a i7875k that's oc at 4.1 ghz.

    Help! I am 16, and have virtually no income, but am looking for the most beneficial upgrade to the pc I've scraped together. The cost of said upgrade is unlimited, since I can save up money over time from misc. tasks, bets and other dumb stuff. I just need to know what part i need to upgrade soonest, and a recommendation for the replacement.
    ---Specs---
    AMD 8320 @stock (need cooler for stable OC, obviously)
    Asrock 970 extreme 3
    10gb of mixed ddr3 (all manually set to 1333 for max stability ;3)
    EVGA GTX 750ti SC @stock
    CX500m power supply
    1 tb hdd
    250gb hdd
    some fans :3
    all inside a nzxt source 210
    I am playing @900p 75hz (my monitor accepted 75hz in nvidia control panel, despite official specs only allowing 75hz@ lower resolutions...YAY!)
    Ideally, I want to max all my games and still get ~45fps...currently I struggle to get the 24fps "cinematic experience" when maxing games.

      For best price/performance, get a good cooler and OC. While you can get the 950 for cheap new, it's performance of the SSC version even is around 60% slower then the 970 stock. Both used GTX 970 and the Rx480 4gb new will be around $200. Probably the best graphics cards for their price. Other then that, just be aware that your PSU will be getting close to being maxed out.

    • @Kinneytube
      @Kinneytube 8 лет назад

      Pretty much what T Swag said...the RX 480 is gonna be the best bang for your buck. An SSD won't help with frame rates just boot and load times, that said I have at least one in all my computers...but it's a luxury. Upgrade the GPU. As for the power supply, you should be fine....that's a pretty good 500 watt unit.
