  • About ARCHIE: Archie is a four-part drama that outlines the life of the infamous Cary Grant. Born in Bristol, England in 1904, to parents Elsie and Elias, Archie narrates the story of a young Archibald Alexander Leach’s troubled childhood and how extreme poverty, his father’s adultery and the loss of his older brother, John, tore the family apart and sent his loving mother into a downward spiral of grief and depression. Jeff Pope’s scripts reveal how deceit, cruelty and one, overpowering lie shaped Archie’s life. At 14 he auditioned for the music hall act, the Bob Pender Troupe, a band of acrobats, stilt walkers, clowns and comedians after seeing them perform at the Bristol Hippodrome. Lean and athletic, he learned the art of stilt walking, and when the troupe went on tour to the US, teenage Archie was intoxicated by the land of opportunity. Believing he had no family to return to in the UK, he decided to stay in the US to try to make his way in show business.
With no thoughts of acting, a chance meeting with the comedian George Burns helped him find his first footing on the acting ladder and a contract with a movie studio who felt he needed to change his name, and Cary Grant was born. The drama intercuts with scenes from 1961 when at the height of his fame, living in Benedict Canyon, Los Angeles, the legendary actor was breaking all box office records, but desperately unhappy in his private life. With two failed marriages behind him, he began to woo an actress he’d seen on a TV show, Dyan Cannon. Thirty-three years his junior, Dyan, didn’t initially fall for his charms turning down his attempts to meet, because she didn’t feel they could ever be a match. Dashingly handsome, suave and sophisticated, Cary continued to pursue her, with introductions to his famous friends, until they eventually wed in Las Vegas in 1965.
The series also stars Laura Aikman (Not Going Out, Gavin and Stacey) as Cary’s formidable ex-wife, actress and filmmaker Dyan Cannon, with Harriet Walter (Succession, Ted Lasso, Killing Eve) as Elsie Leach, Cary’s mother.
Dainton Anderson (Patrick Melrose), Calam Lynch (Bridgerton) and Oaklee Pendergast (Home) play young versions of Archie Leach, and Kara Tointon (Mr Selfridge, The Halcyon, Sound of Music Live) plays young Elsie.

Jennifer seems like a lovely lady. Cary Grant, of course, is a legend. And obviously his class rubbed off on her, and her upbringing by Dyan clearly steered her in the right direction. She’s very well spoken and comes across with a humility that I would not have expected from someone with her lineage. I can’t wait to watch this!

What a wonderful production. Although I knew he'd come from humble beginnings, I had no idea how his early life had adversely affected him. How sad that he didnt find real happiness until later in life.

This video has got to be over 20 years old. 😛 There's no way Jennifer is 57 in here. She could pass for 30 years old. From a distance, but close up she still looks younger than 50.

she does her Dad dirty by denying his sexual relationships with men, particularly Orry-Kelly and Randolph Scott. By denying this truth about her Dad, she totally disrespects him and shows she only cares about maintaining the lie that he never slept with males. Who cares that he was obviously bisexual? There is no judgement except her own. Her series whitewashes her Dad's truth and disrespects his true story by omitting the Orry Kelly relationship and by omitting his relationship with Randolph Scott, who he was with for 12 years. He was with her Mom for less than two years. Eye roll.

Totally. But let's be clear about what the deal is with "Archie". The series was based partly on Dyan Cannon's book about Grant, which is in part a revenge memoir in which she gets to rant about how he was difficult and abusive, while she was a long-suffering saint. Only not that long-suffering because the marriage didn't even last two years. Despite Cannon & Grant being together for that tiny window in his later life, the TV series (supposedly based on it) stretches back to his childhood, pre-Hollywood and early Hollywood career. So that part is based on highly selective research, all of which is essentially to create a Cary Grant history that jibes with the story Cannon wants to tell. Some of it is vaguely accurate. Some is very obviously tweaked. And there are very major omissions - the biggest being Randolph Scott, who appears in "Archie" for about three seconds, despite the fact that Grant's relationship with Scott lasted twelve years - longer than all of his marriages combined. It's a bit like someone writing a biography of Jennifer Grant and making it mostly about her being Dyan Cannon's daughter, while never mentioning Cary Grant, even though he was in her life for 20 years.

Apparently Cary was a chameleon, and only out for himself. His astrology chart shows lots of things tied to his behavior, although, I never doubt that he and Randolph were truly partners, although it appears Randolph was the pure soul. Cary slept with anyone if it meant he could get ahead. And his constant whining about his past; DUDE, you have W?ORLD FAME and more money than God---man up, and get over it; NONE of us escapes this world without trials. I DID enjoy the historical bits, but they whitewashed what happened in NYC. He was w Orry Kelly as lovers and they were rent bois for the ladies to make ends meet. None of that was shown.

Jennifer Grant was born in 1966, Orry-Kelly died in 1964. Cary Grant lived with Randolph Scott during the 30s. Regardless whatever the nature of Cary Grant's relationship with Orry-Kelly or with Randolph Scott is, there is just no way Jennifer will know. I would think it is preposterous for Jennifer to either confirm or deny their relationship.

@@benleung6331She did deny it. So did most of the women he was with. Cary himself jokingly said that people will try to make that up about him after he was gone.

@@cchevy936You seem pretty hostile. He never whined about his background. But he did discuss it with people. It was pretty damaging. He’d hardly be the first movie star that was narcissistic. There were movies stars with less attributes that were worse.
