Love it when an apparently boring subject turns out to be very deep in terms of physics and engineering.
I can remember watching Southern Pacific crews replacing hard faced rails on the Coast Main LIne with conventional rails in the mid 1970s. It seems that the test sections had performed well but something happened when the big contract was let. Something got streamlined. Metallurgy rules the rails. Do the laboratory testing methods actually measure what you are interested in? Is the correlation high enough to be a good predictor? The benefits of hardened rails have been known for a long time. Our world is run by managers and accountants, not engineers. Think about that. Quarterly reports and stock prices rule the board room. Unfunded liabilities (maintenance) takes a back seat. Defer maintenance, be a Wall Street darling, look for a buyout partner. Don't wait until the deferred maintenance becomes apparent. Pump the price and bail out.

OK hardness is good, but the radius seems to be more important. It would have been good to show the radius in more detail, what is good, what existing rails and wheels look like. Yes they should match, what does that look like? I couldn't tell the difference between the light blue and white rails.
Point is that the harder rail helps keep the correct rail profile for much longer, which means less rail maintenance and also less wear on the wheels.
At least, if we listen to the people who are trying to sell harder rails.

Everything but boring and one of the few things were you would least expect high tec and testing. You left me stunned.
Add to that the variations of loads, bogie designs curve radii, tilt angle of rails and different speeds of trains and of course wheel diameter as well as environmental factors like temperature and water on tracks.

I didn’t ask for this, not complaining though.
A Coal Mine with a isolated railroad.. 25 MPH limit.. 170 ton cars.. locomotives at both ends.. down hill loaded for the most part. tight radius curves chews the top of the tracks up thru the curves.. could lowering the outer rail level cause the wheel sets to shift to the outer rail to reduce wear on the track surface since there is not enough speed to create centrafugal force?. could the tight corner require a different grind on the wheel sets. when i saw the track surface.. and the wheels that is what i came up with. its probably totally possible on this non interconnected railroad..
