@Ferro Equus correct, it was built by Baldwin and when it was built it had domes that were closer together and further back, a pointed pilot, a boiler mounted bell, and a high mounted headlight, in the 1930s the southern overhauled 4501 into a USRA design style with further space apart domes, a smokebox mounted bell, a less pointed pilot, and a smokebox mounted headlight, it's inner workings we're already very similar to the USRA 2-8-2s and the changes on the outside basically turned it into a USRA Mikado design copy.

@@77thTrombone he did a good job of getting the motive power on the track all right. unlike William Knight the under cover engineer in the Andrews raiders did when he took over the General and took her out of Big Shanty on April 12th 1862. I understand that he tried make her crash into the Texas at the end of the chase but there was very little steam pressure left in the boiler to do that thankfully
@@eliotreader8220 I wonder: did knight have any real experience on a loco? He couldn't have If he didn't even shovel. Esp as this was the early days of stream, and most folks had ag backgrounds. He'd've been way ahead of times to have much experience at all. For all I know, he could've gotten so wrapped up getting the throttle and back-off worked out under threat of rifle fire that he forgot about the boiler fire. I'll read up on the story.

My son is six years old, and is a lover of trains. From toddlerhood, he watched "Riding the Rails," which I found on RUclips while searching for Johnny Cash songs for him. He would watch in rapt fascination as every segment could unfold, before he could even talk. When he learned to talk, he'd shout "Done!" along with the "last spike being pounded in" segment. He loved the folk tunes.
One day, it disappeared from RUclips. I tried to secure a physical copy, but it's hard to find, and I now lack most of the necessary equipment. Then, this summer (ironically, while riding Amtrak's Southwest Chief with my kids), I searched on a whim, and found it! Now my son requests it each night to fall asleep. Thank you so much for the upload, American Rail Club...even if it appears that RUclips cut the Ballad of John Henry segment...I guess I get it...the film depiction *is* a tad minstrel-ish. But we do miss the song.

When I was a little boy my dad would play videos of UP 844 and I would fall asleep. I grew up around trains. Now I play videos of UP Big Boy and my girls when they where little would fall asleep.
A family friend burned this off the air onto VHS when I was young (too young to remember the exact date) and for the last 30 years, I have watched this over and OVER. The only difference is that I now watch online and can skip to the best songs!

Hi from Green Bay!! GO PACKERS!!!!! Almost 45 years ago when this special train show was on TV 38 on p.b.s. I recorded the sound on audio cassette tapes by using my parents tape recorder. Plus now in 2022 A.D. I STILL have these cassettes. But since they have only 30 minutes per side. I lost a few seconds when I flipped the tape over in the old Panasonic recorder. Luckily, there were 2 versions, with a shorter version with some segments cut out, or edited. Thus between the 2.sets of audio tapes, I got the Complete Program. Now in 2022 A.D., I REALLY want to transfer this classic video onto a DVD or flash drive and watch on a Big Screen T.V.!!!!! GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.!!!!! IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST THE MESDIAH!!!!! AND THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT!!!!! ALLELUIA!!!!! AMEN 🙏. HAPPY SAINT VALENTINE DAY 💝 ❤ 💖 ♥ 💕 2-14-2022 A.D.!!!!!

Back when you had to wait for TV to air something you liked, I always waited for this to air again. I guess because he did snappy train songs, I became a big Johnny Cash fan, and managed to see him in concert once when I was a kid, the only time he ever came to my hometown. This special came at a pivotal time in history, when the railroads weren't looking good at all. You could see lots of reminders of the steam era all around long after steam was gone from the main lines. This special showed what it was like before then and at that time

The two wrecks Cash sang about in this were the Vaughan wreck better known as the wreck of Casey Jones Occurred on April 30th, 1900 when a passenger train pulled by Illinois central 382 with Casey jones at the throttle collided with the rear end of a stalled freight train Casey Jones was the only one killed in the wreck, he is attributed with saving the lives of the passengers by decreasing the trains speed from 80 miles per hour to 30. The second wreck is not as well known it is known as the Wreck of old 97, The train was called the old 97 because its official name was fast mail #97 it was bound for Spencer North Carolina pulled by southern 1102 the train was an hour late and the engineer was pressured to speed to get to spencer on time as the train had not ever been late. The train jumped the track on the stillhouse trestle in Danville Virginia killing 11 and Injuring 7.

I show this to people who do not understand why some of us are crazy about trains. I have at least 3 friends who I can say, this acted like a gateway for them to at least be interested.

i my self am a 17 year old boy who loves trains and works on the railroads in new zealand and i grew up listening to cash with songs like folsom prison blues, give my love to rose, ring of fire and many more and i sound just like cash i got a baritone voice so you know how it goes

I didn't realize how into trains Johnny Cash was.
Great documentary The story re enactments and music go together really well. Johnny Cash was a great choice of presenter. Sadly the railways in UK have gone the same way Freight is still very important in US and still the best way of moving things long distance long may that continue. Here we concentrate more on moving people and most of our intercity trains now run at 125mph.
Great entertaining history lessson with one of my favorite singers.

Tbh with Covid it’s happening again, Amtrak has lowered there standards with its new owner and are losing passengers. Kinda sad for passenger trains to be put on the backburner. The machines that helped build this country have been forgotten about and only exist in museums.
This hasn't been my experience... I've been a regular Amtrak rider since about 2005, up till 2020/Covid. This past summer, I was able to start riding again, and was actually really impressed at the state of the trains.
But passenger trains have always been back burner, TBH. The right of ways are owned by the freight lines, and they're forever the priority.

Passenger trains have always had priority over freight trains, even today's Amtrak. this from Amtrak : The freight railroads make dispatching decisions about which trains have priority. Federal law requires Amtrak passenger trains to receive preference over freight transportation, according to Amtrak.

As a kid growing up in Los Angeles in the 1960s-1980s my favorite place in the world was Travel Town in Griffith Park. And my favorite place to eat out? Victoria Station, of course, followed by Carney's on Ventura Blvd in Studio City...
It's been many years since I've seen this but I feel like there's a massive cut when they started talking about section Foreman's and stuff. I'm like 80% to 90% positive there's supposed to be a story or The Ballad of John Henry there and it was just a massive cut to the next scene I see this was re-uploaded and premiered in 2021 so I don't know if it was cut for some b******* political stuff, licensing/copyright stuff, or if I'm not remembering this right but I'm almost certain there was supposed to be a set up there for John Henry. Like I said I might be remembering it wrong but I swear that was the set up to at least a short Ballad of John Henry the videos only around 46 minutes long so the feeling something was cut but as I said I might be wrong
Quick update, I just checked & looked online at the original copy that they put out for DVD that's no longer in print. It did feature The Ballad of John Henry in the original film was about an hour long for some reason the American Rail Club channel here either got a copy of the film that didn't have John Henry in it or chose to cut it out for weird political, licensing/copyright stuff, or something but for some reason The Ballad of John Henry along with possibly a couple others are supposed to be in here that are missing. John Henry's inspiring folk song and one of the few African American folktales we have in our nation it seems really inappropriate to not have it.

The reason I know is because my son, now six, spent his toddlerhood obsessed with this film. One day, it vanished from RUclips, and we were so disappointed. I was thrilled to see it back this year. But his favorite was the John Henry segment...
I know that segment exists, because I have a dvd with that segment, but that poor dvd doesn’t work so well anymore.

this is a cool documentary in less than an hour about the trains. now i understand some of the history. in fairlee vermont at the oldn ely train depot. from 1909. there is a stack of iron rail that has a forging with a 1940 year stamped on i. there must have been lots of material on that old track. it is very worn nut it was part of the green mountain rail.
ithe ely depot was for cooper ore from the ely cooper mine from copperfield road in a town now called vershire ( vermont/ new hampshire) in the 1880s thru 1900s copper was king in vermont. it was rumoted that george westinghouse of train brake technology was there to find a way to smelt better copper out of the ely mine ore. cool train history from the 1880.towns like bradford were built and grainte was mined in fairlee vermont. in some small obsolete quarries.
foster and lloyd sang about the cowboys in texas in the 1880s. steam was big in vermont along the connecticut river. in 1960× steam toen eas in bellows fall vt. it has been dismantled and move to thr national train and museum in Scranton pennsylvania in the heart of coal and iron country .lots of history and changes in this country we call america

I've loved train songs ever since hearing The Runaway Train (the kid's song) when I was young then Stonewall Jackson's Smoke Along the Track which my dad had on '45 turned me to country music in general and country train songs in particular. Huge fan of Johnny Cash since I was in my twenties so to see John narrating a film about American railroad history is the cherry on the cake!
My single complaint, he went straight from Trevithick to the first US scheduled passenger service whilst making no mention of Stephenson's Rocket in England making the world's very first passenger run. I know it's a history of US railroads, but if you're going to mention Watt and Trevithick in the UK then you shouldn't skip Stephenson just to make American railroads more pioneering than they really were. Just sayin'.
