Quote from a real Mexican: "It’s worth mentioning that most people who claim it is cultural appropriation are people who by no means have lived here (Mexico). In the end of day, if you want to dress up as a sugar skull or as a skeleton w/ sugar skull decor, by all means. Nothing is offensive or cultural appropriation unless used as such.“ Although this person does not speak for all Mexicans, he/she says it's a pretty much how many feel. I love my culture and I do not get offended by others who appreciate it. You are not making fun or being disrespectful, so make the darn video!
I'm Mexican, my whole family is Mexican and iv discussed this with my family members that still actually live is Michoacán and they find it offensive. There's still meaning to the sugar skull and its relation with Día de los muertos. Everybody is going to have different opinions to how offensive this is, but it's best to just not do it.
+Jackie F. That's what I wrote on line 4.
+alondra carranza That is why I see many of my relatives and friends in Mexico in sugar skull makeup on Halloween. Yes, Mexico does Halloween now.
Im mexican, and I live here...its not offensive, just people who believe in German idea of culture could believe that (El mito de la Cultura)...but is not a sugar skull is a «Catrina» (which means a rich lady who comes from dead for «dia de los muertos» or something like that).
Si eres religioso ni celebras día de muertos, no mames jajajaja!!! es considerada tradición pagana y nada tiene que ver con Cristo.
Why are people allowed to make fun of me and say I have no culture when at the same time it's a crime for me to paint my face like this? As long as the culture is being respected and understood by the person using it anyone should be able to do it. I have an extensive family history in Ireland but people constantly belittle me and tell me I have no culture because of the lack of melanin in my skin. St. Patrick's day is a part of my culture, but I have never found it wrong for people of other ethnicities to wear green and take part in it. Anyone should be able to do what they want with their hair, face, clothes, etc as long as they understand and respect whatever culture it comes from. And just because some people are white doesn't mean they should be insulted and degraded into nothing more than something to make fun of and blame stuff on.
What products did you use ?
I will wear Sugar Skull tomorrow at Halloween in school. I know what it means and what celebration it comes of, so no need to bitch it off to everybody who likes this make up style. I will wear normally prety clothes too, like I normally do. I am Finnish (so, for Americans I am white, even if I don't brag/something with it). I am not that good with knowing all culture types, especially at the America. Should I mock everybody, who uses Santa Claus? Because he comes originally from my home country Finland and he rides wiht reindeers, but they are not flying. Americans and others have redoed our Santa Claus origin version, but we don't shout about it to everybody. Why? Because it's nice, that others knows about our culture etc. I don't get, why especially these Sugar Skull make up videos get so much hate comments every year. I am so done with these comments, sorry for my bad English, I am not native speaker and I will never be. Thank you.
have you not seen All the other sugar skulls on here y is se the ONLY one that is disrespectful Samantha?? Dia de los muertos is also known as DAY OF THE DEAD. pretty sure Halloween is suppose to be the only day the dead can walk around on earth! So the myth says!
Watching this back after a year is PAINFUL. Might have to record an updated version...
+Jamie Genevieve DO IT! :D
+Jamie Genevieve please don't, your make-up up is really great, but appropriating my culture isn't.
I suggest not doing it. It's highly offensive for foreigners to just participate in other's cultures just to look edgy or fashionable when there's a cultural significance behind our traditions.
Sincerely, a Méxican *who actually practices Day of The Dead because it's a part of his culture*
You should yess please
+Uriel Garcia Awk quit your wining if you're offended by makeup tutorials associated with sugar skulls then simply don't watch it.. It's that simple.

Oh, now my tablet is leaving letters of some of my words. God D:
It's not your culture
+LawLuFanGirlForever That's awesome! You even took the time to learn of it's meaning. I only see the positive in this, all the others need to stop being so negative.
wtf is wrong with people ok it's a Mexican tradition so the fuck what? it's just a tutorial she's not offending anyone and if you get offended over this you do not belong in social media and yes I'm Mexican too and this is not offending at all smfdh
samegirl05 if she did a traditional Native American or Muslim look, would you consider that offensive?
oh, please stop with the "culture appropriation" nonsense. this is 2015. its called sharing a culture. there is nothing offensive about this. by that logic, people shouldnt watch anime because youre not japanese. or celebrate st patricks day because youre not irish.
its a very good thing to learn about the world around you, its a beautiful place. do not try to make the world take a step backwards by acting like an overprotective mother towards every little tradition. humans and cultures evolve and change and are spread through the world, rinse and repeat. its a good thing. it just means people can have more things in common.
remembering your heritage is important as well, but sharing it and educating others who are interested is just as important! its good to learn. its good to communicate. its good to share.
if you disagree, i fear for the future of society. i want the first rocket off this planet if people like you are going to enforce extreme segregation like this. you speak of equality, and then want to put everyone and everything into a box. it makes me sick.
preach....
No you don't understand what it is then. If she were to wear this, then it should only be on the Day of the Dead. Not for a costume...get it? That's like me wanting to dress as a Chinese person for halloween wearing all this white face paint and a cheep kimono with chop sticks in my hair. Obviously someone one get offended because I wasn't true to the tradition and had no idea what everything had value to or meant.
Shes wearing it as a halloween costume. If she was to actually study the culture and understand it and then celebrating it as sharing it it would be different.
sharing the culture, fine. celebrating day of the dead, great! but using one of their celebrations as a costume for you own celebration, not fine. see the difference?
This is a tradition to mourn over our dead relatives. No one is saying white people or people of other ethnicities can't celebrate, but they should respect the fact that this isn't some silly face paint you can use for "Halloween".
If you can't guess by my name I'm 100% born Mexican. All of the people saying this is oppressive, offensive or anything to Mexican culture needs to calm down. You should be proud others are using Catrinas even if it's for Halloween or whatever they want to use this tutorial for.
Guadalupe Aguero but it's not for Halloween lmfao it's to honor our dearly departed tf ?
+Guadalupe Aguero as long as she knows what its about, I won't get offended. if she knows what its about that means she's appreciating everything about this and not just the physical appearance.
I'm a Mexican living in Scotland and 1. I'm not offended, 2. I totally loved the look, 3. I wan't your accent please
It’s always the people who aren’t a part of the culture who accuse people of “cultural appropriation” OK WTF I am HISPANIC (Mexican) I was never even offended by this video and I didn’t even think about it until I sall the dumb comments on this video like WTF PEOPLE ARE SO SENSITIVE !
Watching this in 2019 and omg! You've changed so much! ❤
Your evolution is iconic!
Evolution 😂😂
@@gretaweiss6802 damn, I really butchered that 😂
Lou A
It’s cute though! Made me laugh! 👌🏽👌🏽
@@gretaweiss6802 ahaahaha thank you! I'm glad my dumbass could make you laugh 🤦🏻♀️😂😂😂
that moment when you can hear friends on the background
Gente de RUclips realmente las Catrinas han echo Todo una moda obviamente MEXICANA ¡¡¡¡¡¡ !!!!!!!!! Viva Mèxico¡¡¡¡¡
I heard F.R.E.I.N.D.S in the backround
same
I don't get why people are so offended over the fact that a huge amount of Mexicans who celebrate Day of the Dead are asking to have an aspect of our culture to be respected and not used in a way in which it is costume. Yes, culture should be shared and appreciated. But also RESPECTED. A lot of people are oblivious to the meaning of the sugar skull, and just because you can throw out a few facts about Dia de los Muertos, doesn't mean you can just claim everything and only use it for the aesthetic appeal. If you don't celebrate it on a yearly basis, find someone who does and ask them about it. Be wanting to use it more for the looks. Also, realize it is not your place to speak for those over wanting their culture respected. I don't think people know the actual meaning of cultural appropriation. Educate yourself.
This just popped up on my homepage/recommended 😂😂
Thanks for sharing!
To all the people having a pissing match over it, grow up. Its makeup. That's it. Dress up. For whatever the hell.
Plenty in this world to get upset over, but not makeup. Grow a set.
I LOVE YOUR ACCENT. IT'S FREAKING AMAZING.
***** ?
Would it be cultural appropriation to wear this to a party? I don't want to offend anyone...
I'm Mexican and I don't find it offensive but I've heard people say that it's rude
It is cultural appropriation... Its used on a day where your dead relatives return to the World for a day. Its Nice that you asked tho and Arent just using a culture as a "cute costume"
+vivipedia wait so would it be rude to wear sugar skull like makeup for Halloween?
honestly I don't see what's wrong with it because it is A CUTE COSTUME just go for it dude.
+blah blehrp thats so rude of you to say tho. if mexicans say theyre not wanting their culture to be used because its "cute", you should not do it. simple as that
whooo yer scottish finaly someone who isent american me and sarah davinson are just like you xx wonderfull work xx il defo try it
I'm not getting all offended over Hispanics setting off fireworks for the 4th of July or anything like that, no disrespect. I say everyone just do their own thing and be happy yay
Are you fucking joking
Please tell me you're joking
Last time I checked America is a melting pot meaning they live here. So are you saying that Americans shouldn't even celebrate Cinco De Mayo because everyone seems to go to a Mexican Restaurant without even know what they're celebrating.
Don't get discouraged by offending people. It's completely fine to do something if you like it. Even if you're doing it for fashion.
Other people's culture is not fashion. It's disrespect. I'm a white girl and I would never do any of this because I don't steal people's cultures.
All these comments about "cultural appropriation". Okay I get that the sugar skull is for the Day of the Dead celebration. But there's no need to get butt hurt.
Halloween is an Irish tradition but you don't see us (I'm Irish) getting upset or butt hurt when people all over the world celebrating Halloween.
Day of the dead is about mourning our dead relatives. This and you are incredibly disrespectful.
clarisse Jackson Calm down. This isn't even your business.
Saoirse Curran Omfg agreed 🇨🇮🇨🇮 and plus people dress up as leprechauns for Halloween even though its normally associated with St Patrick's Day
i think mostly they mean white americans cuz trust me mexicans know about asian european traditions and all sorts but look how americans mix up our culture with their "own" 5 de mayo is not a day to get fucking drunk for mexicans its celebrating our ancestors who died fighting and defeating the french
People aren’t Butt hurt over other people celebrating Día de los muertos but mad at the fact that people are choosing to use this as a costume when it’s not it’s a tradition to honor the people we have lost
"eye-hole things"
Orbits. Those are your orbits.
Watching a year today but what I was going to say was, it's bad having pale skin because you put white face paint on and you can't even tell its on😐😂😂😂
Love this voice-over style of video - great tutorial!
Baby Jamie👶🏼 It it just me or have you gotten more Scottish (no hate) 🤣🤣 what happened to the little kitten?
I think you need to do a 2021 skull look. Let’s see how it changes and what makeup you’d use now.
Found my look this year 🙆🏼
Maybe people should actually learn about this culture, or my culture, I find this highly offensive. Sugar skulls are not something to be used as a costume, they should be used in celebration of Day of the Dead, and if you are going to paint your face like one, at least fucking learn human skull anatomy.
You can tell she re-did it for the video picture
Just came across this gem!! I'm looking for tutorials for Halloween this year, any chance you can do an updated sugar skull look, something you would do with your current products and style, pleeeeeeeeassse 😁
Love it! You should do a more dramatic one though.. With darker colors, and maybe some blue or purple in it as well!
I’m presuming everyone kicking off at ‘culture shaming’ is also complaining to all the big company’s who sell sugar skulls and similar merch? Oh and to Disney who’s got a fluffin full movie about Day Of The Dead coming out soon??????
Agrabah Dreams idk how the movie is cultural appropriation. Its literally a movie just about Mexicans & Mexican culture. It was a good movie.
i could just suscribe because you are watching Friends
Super video! What camera are you using?
this isn't as the image. 😞😫
bellavinda 222 it is, she is the same person and it might just be the lighting
Her face looked so much more natural here. Not trying to be rude, but she looked really pretty here :) (and still does)
I have mexican roots. Why would I be offended that you are interested in part of my culture and find it beautiful? That's what lifes about, sharing the most beautiful parts with eachother. Btw, very beautiful.
Wow! I didn't even recognise Jamie! Wasn't until I thought "this was a cool tutorial, what other videos does she have!?" 🤦🏿🤣
Okay so this is my entry for your twitter giveaway. I discovered you and your channel after looking for inspiration on this type of halloween look. After I heard your intriguing accent and saw your amazing talent, I obviously had to binge watch all of your videos!! I loved your hair and that you had Friends playing in the background. Also, who wouldnt want to get to know Drogba?!?!?! Anyways, I love you and your snaps with Jack and Drogba. Please see this comment and PLEEEEAAAASEEEE pick me. I love you!!!
most of the tutorials I've seen on youtube are done by white people, like you could at least give credit to the mexican culture for your inspiration:)
My reactions during the video
Omg you're accent is adorable
Omg friends!
Oh my god damn you're gorgeous
KITTY
Wow you're makeup is great
KITTY AGAIN
Ahhhhh jamie!!!! I remember seeing this when you first had on! I 💗 this x
i really like the tutorial!
This is fantastic! amazing technique. This and Claire Dim's are my favorite. Claire Dim accompanied the look with a costume too and it looked awesome.
I love going back to the first upload of a youtuber.. love to watch the GLOW UP
love you Jamie G!!!! xoxox all the way from Canada
!!! This just came up in my news feed
....😊🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
It's the baby cat for me 😍
Love this one, but I found if you make another spider web in the upper left hand side of your face, it looks better
Thank you for posting this, I was this for Halloween and literally I couldn't have done it if it weren't for you! 💖
I think u look amazing with makeup. and with no makeup you look just as amazing. you da bomb
I love this definitely trying this out and if it comes out I wil, have my makeup for Halloween 😁😁😍
The look is great, the commentary is hilarious. "teeth or stitches or whatever" it's so genuine and zero-fks, i love it.
I'm going with this look for Halloween because it's beautiful ❤️ love the look btw!
Omg, new to your channel, it cut to your bare face, and giiiirl your stunning! wow
My sisters is better no affence
anyone can do this whether it's their culture or not just like its OK to dress up as a nun or hold a cross or anything so if you take offence to this to bad to sad your words are not going to stop anyone in fact I'm atheist and a Canadian and my makeup will be the exact same to this so if you have a problem with that sue me.
honestly you sound stupid like when did i ever say i was white and i was going to DRESS UP as a nun im a Jamaican and this tutorial compliments my skin i wore jeans and sweater i don't know about you but in my country that is what the good children wear. like seriously please read the comment if your really going to take time out of your life to reply to it ok #byegirl
I never said anything about you being white? God, listen to your own words. Also I don't give a fuck if this tutorial compliments your skin, if you're not mexican than just don't do it.
when you put on the cheek bone i makes your face amazingly slim you are so talented
Ah lil babie Jamie. You’ve come so far. Well done lovely. X
buzzfeed brought me here.
2 years old..... have you always been so perfect? Yes, yes you have.
Cute
I love, love this video! One question though: where is the cat now???
My parents have him!
Ah! So he is still as happy. Thanks for all these tutorials. I love them and they are so easy to do the way you explain your process.
So cool🙈💕
Wow, thanks so much, i'm so going to experiment!

Ana Bravo
Go by the title of this video and find an arrow that points down and click it, then scroll down to find "Products"
There you go! 😬😬
Oh my lord you look like a different person now!
I love you accent lol. you probably get that alot but oh well lol
Is it me or is her kitten the most adorable thing anyone has ever seen!?
Getting mad at her for doing a Mexican tradition is kinda silly. imagine Christians telling you to stop celebrating easter and Christmas cos it's offensive (which it sorta is btw) cos you don't understand it. it's just sharing a tradition.
friends in the backround💕💕💕
Love the kitty (and the tutorial) :-)
Yes it's cute but there is so much more meaning behind the sugar skull
I'm definitely doing this for day of the dead
👍
Sugar wants to make a Jamie Skull.
