      Wanderlust Travel Videos Maybe not in square footage, but I’ve never seen a carpark for 12,500 cars. And I have never seen a parking garage with such nice, high finished surfaces like walls, floors and ceilings. It looks very safe with enough lighting, natural and artificial. I can imagine it also feels safe for users, day and night.

      We do lock our bikes -obviously-. Every bike has a lock directly under the saddle (loops through the wheel). In indoor parkings like these (which have surveillance) we don't commonly lock our bikes to something else (like a pole or to the rack). Wich -unsurveilled- outdoor parking it is smarter to use a chain and lock your bike to something. There are many bikes " borrowed".

    Als mensen niet meer bovengronds hoeven te fietsen, moeten ze hun trottoirs ook niet meer betonneren. Dan volstaan smallere paden en alle andere gebieden moeten worden vergroend met weiden, struiken, bloemen, struiken en bomen.
    If people don't have to ride their bicycles above ground, they shouldn't concrete their sidewalks as well. Then narrower paths are enough and all other areas should be greened with meadows, bushes, flowers, shrubs and trees.

    • @Paul_C
      @Paul_C 2 года назад

      Not really, when you place the rows together the area will increase because you can't lift the bicycle to the top rack. It would mean double the area needed.

    It wouldn't be such a good idea unless you've cycled quite a distance to get there: otherwise the amount of walking from where your bike is parked, and walking back to retrieve it might make it more sense to leave the bike at home and walk into town instead.
    The underground automated system they use in Japan makes a lot more sense: You deposit your bike at a gate, and then retrieve it from the same gate, and the storage and retrieval is all automatic. The bikes are all moved to the underground storage facility and are inaccessible by any 'human' (except for the owner when retrieval is requested.) Convenience & Security - something that the Dutch system seems a little weak on.

    • @wouter2820
      @wouter2820 4 года назад +13

      While automated systems would be more secure and convenient, they're also quite slow and would result in huge lines of people waiting to store their bike. Like the video description says, this garage has room for 12500 bicycles and that's only out of the 31000 total bicycle spaces in the direct area and there's still not enough room. The parking mostly serves bike commuters from all around the city since it's located just below the largest train station in the country (it handled about 285000 passengers per day pre-covid), so having a speedy way to park your bike while trying to catch your train is essential. I do agree that it might take a while to walk from your bike to the train platform, but at least with this you'll save time trying to find an empty spot, which definitely wasn't the case before.

    • @markknoop6283
      @markknoop6283 3 года назад +9

      Can you imagine 100 people arriving @ the same time because the train is gone leaf.
      I think your automated system is gone fail big time.

    • @hansolo2121
      @hansolo2121 3 года назад +7

      Dave Bartlett An automated bike storing system like that has been tried in The Netherlands. But only on a small scale like in Japan. It doesn't work on the scale of this open underground parking because there are simply waaaayyyy too much people with bikes arriving and leaving at any time. There wiuld bee huge waitniing lines. Not nice if you want to catch your train... Also an automated system like that can have malfunctions and is totally cost ineffective compared to and open plan bike storing facility like in Utrecht. This parking garage was built as a practical solution for true mass cycling. Literally thousands and thousands of people coming and going every day. Not for prestige and a small amound of cyclists like in Japan.

    • @RealConstructor
      @RealConstructor 3 года назад +7

      I don’t see any problem. There is no difference with a car parking garage of 12,500 cars. There you also walk an amount of time, from your parked car to the exit. The only difference is that the walk is longer, because a car needs more space than a bicycle. And yet not every car parking garage is an automated system, why is that? Firstly because it is too expensive and secondly because the waiting times will mount during rush hour. So people will avoid using the automated bicycle parking system and park their bicycles on the pavement. Then we’re back to square one. So I think your comment is a non issue.

    • @RosesAndIvy
      @RosesAndIvy 3 года назад +6

      It might look that way in the video but I park my bike in this place all the time. I’ve never had to walk more than 2 minutes to the station, and that’s if you park your bike all the way in the back.
