Wanderlust Travel Videos Maybe not in square footage, but I’ve never seen a carpark for 12,500 cars. And I have never seen a parking garage with such nice, high finished surfaces like walls, floors and ceilings. It looks very safe with enough lighting, natural and artificial. I can imagine it also feels safe for users, day and night.
Fabulous! A City/Nation that has some respect for bicyclists and their bicycles. Here in Southern California we have plenty of cyclists, but motorists use us for target practice.
Cool, I'm in Utrecht daily but unfortunately my bike lives in Arnhem (and I do too) so I've never been in the bike parking garage in Utrecht. It's enormous! Awesome.
Absolutely forbidden and there's surveillance in the bicycle garages. Besides everyone knows where the parking is for, and those people are bike riders themselves. They won't do such a thing there
Great Video, by far the most quiet parking in the world :-) Nobody seems to attach their bike with an anti theft system. Are there never any bikes stolen?
We do lock our bikes -obviously-. Every bike has a lock directly under the saddle (loops through the wheel). In indoor parkings like these (which have surveillance) we don't commonly lock our bikes to something else (like a pole or to the rack). Wich -unsurveilled- outdoor parking it is smarter to use a chain and lock your bike to something. There are many bikes " borrowed".
@@Brozius2512 that is surprising. I watched one of those Japanese videos where the camera person is walking the roads of Tokyo and one of the things I noticed throughout the entire video is the amount of bicycles parked outside of peoples homes, no locks or anything like that.
Is awesome!! We would like to be able to use these images to explain sustainable mobility... We are "Mobility Institute" in Spain, a non-profit association. It's possible?
You can put your e-bikes in those racks, no problem. You can even put them in the top ones, it works with a piston system so you can easily put your bike in.
If people don't have to ride their bicycles above ground, they shouldn't concrete their sidewalks as well. Then narrower paths are enough and all other areas should be greened with meadows, bushes, flowers, shrubs and trees.
Not really, when you place the rows together the area will increase because you can't lift the bicycle to the top rack. It would mean double the area needed.
It wouldn't be such a good idea unless you've cycled quite a distance to get there: otherwise the amount of walking from where your bike is parked, and walking back to retrieve it might make it more sense to leave the bike at home and walk into town instead. The underground automated system they use in Japan makes a lot more sense: You deposit your bike at a gate, and then retrieve it from the same gate, and the storage and retrieval is all automatic. The bikes are all moved to the underground storage facility and are inaccessible by any 'human' (except for the owner when retrieval is requested.) Convenience & Security - something that the Dutch system seems a little weak on.
While automated systems would be more secure and convenient, they're also quite slow and would result in huge lines of people waiting to store their bike. Like the video description says, this garage has room for 12500 bicycles and that's only out of the 31000 total bicycle spaces in the direct area and there's still not enough room. The parking mostly serves bike commuters from all around the city since it's located just below the largest train station in the country (it handled about 285000 passengers per day pre-covid), so having a speedy way to park your bike while trying to catch your train is essential. I do agree that it might take a while to walk from your bike to the train platform, but at least with this you'll save time trying to find an empty spot, which definitely wasn't the case before.
Dave Bartlett An automated bike storing system like that has been tried in The Netherlands. But only on a small scale like in Japan. It doesn't work on the scale of this open underground parking because there are simply waaaayyyy too much people with bikes arriving and leaving at any time. There wiuld bee huge waitniing lines. Not nice if you want to catch your train... Also an automated system like that can have malfunctions and is totally cost ineffective compared to and open plan bike storing facility like in Utrecht. This parking garage was built as a practical solution for true mass cycling. Literally thousands and thousands of people coming and going every day. Not for prestige and a small amound of cyclists like in Japan.
I don’t see any problem. There is no difference with a car parking garage of 12,500 cars. There you also walk an amount of time, from your parked car to the exit. The only difference is that the walk is longer, because a car needs more space than a bicycle. And yet not every car parking garage is an automated system, why is that? Firstly because it is too expensive and secondly because the waiting times will mount during rush hour. So people will avoid using the automated bicycle parking system and park their bicycles on the pavement. Then we’re back to square one. So I think your comment is a non issue.
It might look that way in the video but I park my bike in this place all the time. I’ve never had to walk more than 2 minutes to the station, and that’s if you park your bike all the way in the back.

Wow. That place is NOT messing around. So cool. It goes on forever.
Thanks for showing us this. -Henry
Thanks Henry. It's not quite as big as a vehicle parking garage. But still impressive indeed!

Apparently it’s already to small.

It's funny cause I've walked past this garage 100 times and I never knew how huge it is! Thanks for the tip!
Yea same lmao
Same
The luxury of silence
I forgot where I put my bike. Have you seen it? It has two wheels and a black saddle.
I want to be Dutch... I want to live in Netherlands...
Absolutely terrific!!! Great video, thanks!
Nice architecture as well !
Thank you🌷
Heaven for cycle riders
In UK we are 100 years behind....:(
Meanwhile me in the UK wondering if I can bike to the Dentist but not knowing were the nearest bike lock is.
I always was the best and biggest
and I always will be the best and biggest
Jazeker! 😉
Einfach nur genial!
Hopefully this is a concept that takes over the world! We need it bad.
Beatiful Netherlands
Thank you
Its just on different level to almost all other bike parking

You can take an OV bike 😉
You don’t need cars if everyone uses bikes.
Cool never seen bevor
First World
Wtf en ik maar denken dat die van Tilburg modern en groot was-
What is the security like ? Do bikes get stolen from there ?
Dutch biking kingdom❤
How tall are the ceilings?
Surprised there aren't a bunch of skateboarders doing back flips off of the stalagmite things.
Absolutely forbidden and there's surveillance in the bicycle garages. Besides everyone knows where the parking is for, and those people are bike riders themselves. They won't do such a thing there
where is the bonus story
is going in loops virtual? I am a little lost...

Not in the parking.

Hardly any bikes are stolen in bike parking facilities but on average 450.000 bicycles are stolen every year in the Netherlands when parked outside.
In the parking there's surveillance

They can put a barrier at the entrance

Are there any stations for e bikes?

Are there e bike charging stations at the parking station?
@@Lindleyferchel I'm not sure but I think they have them.
This would only be a problem if you are stupid enough to buy an ebike with non removable battery.
Die is zo groot dat je weer een fiets nodig hebt om bij de uitgang te komen :)
of een Hummer 😜
The stairways should have bicycle runnels.
Why? you can cycle into the parking.
super
is there something like this in the usa
Nope
For cars maybe, certainly not for bicycles.
In india there is not even proper roads where I can ride my cycle. Such a shit country I live in.
Even after 2 years, that must be funniest comment on this video. "Is there something like this in the USA..." 😂🤣😂
wow !

I don't think translation will make any sense. Its a poem, not a serious message xD

Awesome! So, where is the Food Court? Or the Vending Machines? HA!
There are many restaurants and vending machines at the square above and in the train station!
You didn't watch the final section, didn't you? There's a huge Five Guys when you exit.
Unfortunately 2 tourists with their silly plastic hats (aka holy helmet) and lean-over bikes are spoilig this vid!

Can you imagine 100 people arriving @ the same time because the train is gone leaf.
I think your automated system is gone fail big time.

this one?
ruclips.net/video/4LDLQ6dGj0U/видео.html
it has its own problems though.
This is insane. Imagine a place like this but instead of bikes you can park your car in it. That would be awesome!
And it would be 50 times larger and 100 times more environment unfriendly, no thank you.
There is such a place, it's called New York, because that's how much space you need to make that a possibility.
Adding cars? Ha! No, don't ruin it please
😂
