Was a child when I first heard him. I was stunned then and now, in my 80s I am still. Thanks to recordings our many wonderful artists, such as Dimitry Hvorstovsky, will remain with us. They both should have lived longer!!
One of the great tragedies is the timing of brilliant voices like Björling, Gigli, and, of course, Caruso. These men with extraordinary instruments were of an era before the pristine recording capability of modern audio technology. Björling's precision is awe inspiring and yet the quality of even his best recording is inferior by any modern measure. Nonetheless, I'm grateful for what there is.
