  • A conversation with David Abram and Merlin Sheldrake in response to Merlin's new book, 'Entangled Life' (Penguin, 2020). This talk is part of the Magic and Ecology online seminar series. Join us for the live panel with David and Merlin on 9 April 2021, 6pm GMT/1pm EST, chaired by Dr Alice Tarbuck.
David Abram’s seminal The Spell of the Sensuous (1997) argued that disdain for magic produced, in the West, a distorted rather than enlightened sense of the non-human world.
Merlin Sheldrake’s recent work explores what Abram calls the 'more-than-human' quality of nonhuman presences, and together David and Merlin examine what it means to live 'humanly' in a more-than-human world of entangled lifeforms.
    Speaker Biographies:
    Dr David Abram
David Abram is a cultural ecologist, philosopher and sleight-of-hand magician whose influential work, The Spell of the Sensuous: Language and Perception in a More-than-human World (1997), demonstrated the parallels between animism and eco-phenomenology and brought non-Western ontologies into dialogue with Western metaphysics. Abram is especially interested in language and has done important work on the ethics of speech and how it relates to the environment of things named. Abram holds a PhD from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and is Founder and Creative Director of the Alliance for Wild Ethics: wildethics.org.
    Dr Merlin Sheldrake
Merlin Sheldrake is a biologist and author of Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds, and Shape Our Futures. He received a PhD in tropical ecology from Cambridge University for his work on underground fungal networks in tropical forests in Panama, where he was a predoctoral research fellow of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Merlin’s is a keen brewer and fermenter, and is fascinated by the relationships that arise between humans and more-than-human organisms. Find out more at merlinsheldrake.com.
Chair: Alice Tarbuck is a poet and academic based in Edinburgh. Alice is the author of 'A Spell in the Wild: A Year and Six Centuries of Magic' (2020).

Mauro Zappaterra speaks of cerebral spinal fluid as 'the fluid nature on consciousness', explaining the intricate chemical signaling involved. The fluid within the hyphae tubules of the fungal seems akin to CSF. Cerebral spinal fluid bathes and interpenetrates our entire central nervous system, our very apparatus for localized consciousness.

This is so fascinating. I am giving some humble classes to kids of the age 6-7y.o. on special Saturday school. I tell them, for example, the stories about stones and rocks and their direct engagement in all life on the planet .
I firstly had my very doubts to dare to do so, as we never being taught ourselves at the university to teach things in that way. I tell them that scientists divided nature on living and not leaving objects for convenience to stady them. But in reality everything is interconnected. This podcast saved me from my doubts as weather I am on a right path. Interestingly, kids love so much to suggest their own hypnotises . It drives them to get purely exited about the world around them, ones they are allowed to participate in finding answers which we don't yet really have.

I’ve often felt the experience of being a part of something else be it animal or tree as if I was experiencing them but have never heard anyone talk about that. It was lovely to hear.

What a pleasure to bear witness to this meeting of the minds. It has been quite the sensation to hear a discussion involving many threads, the flavor familiar, like a favored seat in some sun shined memory, interwoven gorgeously and wonderfully reframed by two previously unheard, and yet not unfamiliar voices. fresh felt dew upon a moment.
Furthermore, the fanciful feeling realizing this was an almost unheard of format the last time these particular threads were woven through one's fragment of firmamentary fabric, then to have it echoed nearly before full flushing of thought...some winking cosmic jest; Observer observed? felt quite a treat today.
My sincere gratitude for allowing yourselves to become further entangled with the living web via its digital facsimile.

    utterly marvelous conversation!
this is my kind of tongue, my kind of folks... I feel strong kinship with the both of them, even though I didn't know Merlin before. Yet, being a traditional folk musician and experiential synergist, hexa wizard, poet and wordsmith, I completely resonate with all you were talking about.
Just one thought: there obviously is true nonsense in the world, which comes at us as the ancient story of disembodied geometry that teaches us to work with completely abstract concepts of uniform, static cubic space separate from a linear time, in other words think in ways utterly alien to the true embodied patterns and processes that structure our animate cosmos. I would therefore suggest calling the type of playful, melodic, rhythmic sounds that are the irish lilting (or appear as many other vocal forms, from simple ladida to the Sami's Yoik) "freesense" rather than "nonsense".
I would really love to have a conversation with both of you, I think it would be really wonderful and I'd love to express my gratitude for the rewilding and resensing I experienced since I began reading and listening to David by offering my experiences of an empirical, embodied, and even taoist body of knowledge of the behaviours, relationships and principles of the spheres that I learned from integrating Davids work with the science and philosophy of Buckminster Fuller, Synergetics, as well as the teachings of Laotzu, Zhuangzhi and Alan Watts...
how can one get in touch with you???

Thankyou for freesense! yes, I think there are quite a few us,myself included would like to discuss with them, both, either! lol discuss and the things my sense, freesense, experisense has grown me towards.

Wonderful conversation. I recognise something here that I found in Jung, writing on the alchemists - their research, balanced between outward and inward discovery; the ungraspable behaviour of mercury as a substance and as Mercurius, the Trickster, who reveals to us the Self in what Jung called the Individuation process, that makes us whole and balanced.
Yes, T.H.White's Once and Future King was transformative when I read it 60 years ago, when I was 15.

Wonderful conversation - one thread from this tapestry is the notion of permeable liminality - living from 'the edge of the inside' as a homelike campsite for open hearts and spirits like David and Merlin - a quiet, intense joy radiates from the entanglement here....God contemplating God in and with and through ecological communion, open process? Might the plural/constellate form of 'fun guy' be 'fungi'?

I'm just at the 8th minute, but when David describes people waking up to the veracity of the world, it sounds like they are perceiving viriditas - the greening that Hildegard of Bingen spoke of.
