Rammstein are all East Germans, coming from a state which conveniently pushed off all responsibility for the horrors of the Third Reich in a westerly direction. After all, East Germans were Socialists and thus the better people...or so the official view was. Whenever an East German above a certain age tries to lecture me about Nazism, I flip my shit. Rammstein are in that age group.
It is no coincidence that there are so many neo-Nazis in the former GDR. When everthing bad was denied and responibility shirked, the wound continues to fester.

18:38 - While I can't say for sure what the actual intention of the band was (since I'm not part of Rammstein - duh), the verse "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" is part of the first stanza of "Das Lied der Deutschen" by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben. The first stanza was the national anthem during the nazi period. This changed after WWII and is now the third stanza of the same poem.
"Das Lied der Deutschen" was written in 1841, 30 years before the unification of Germany into the German Reich. Von Fallersleben's intentions in the first stanza were most likely expressions of the importance of unity in very divided German-speaking regions. There were several liberal and national movements at the time. Of course, the term "national movement" could be interpreted in a very negative light nowadays, but at the time it was about forming a nation, much like the United States, and not about isolating itself in an elitist and nationalistic way.
However, a strong contributing factor to the "Deutschlandlied" was most likely the Rhine crisis of 1840 which was caused by the French demand that the river Rhine should be reinstated as the French border, which would lead to a loss of approx. 32,000 square kilometers of territory belonged to the German state. France's motives for its demands were influenced by several factors, including territorial ambitions, domestic politics, and a desire to challenge the existing European balance of power. Historically, France had sought to expand its territory eastwards to include the left bank of the Rhine, which was considered the country's natural border. French territorial claims on the Rhine had been a consistent goal since the reign of Louis XIV, and they were revived during the Napoleonic era. Although these ambitions were curbed after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, French leaders still harbored aspirations to regain control of the Rhine territories. This would also play a more or less significant role during the reparation negotiations after WWI.
The domestic situation in France did all but fuel the flames - in 1830, the July Revolution in France led to the rise of the July Monarchy under King Louis-Philippe, a constitutional monarch who sought to appease both liberals and conservatives. In 1840, the French government, led by Prime Minister Adolphe Thiers, sought to strengthen its domestic political position by adopting a more assertive foreign policy. By raising the Rhine issue, the government aimed to rally public opinion around a nationalist cause and divert attention from internal political divisions. The Rhine crisis could be seen as an attempt by Thiers to consolidate his power, bolster the popularity of the July Monarchy, and demonstrate his government's commitment to French national interests. In addition, France's territorial demands were weakened by the Quadruple Alliance which formed after the Napoleonic Wars (1815). The Quadruple Alliance was formed by Austria, Prussia, Russia and Great Britain in order to counter the French military and republican threats. With its demands, France most likely wanted to test the waters and see how far its solidarity with the Quadruple Alliance might reach--and if such demands could sow discontent within the Alliance.
So that's some of the history behind the motivation for the line "Germany above all". While "above all" might be the literally correct translation, it would be far more accurate to translate it to: "Germany above everything". The "Deutschlandlied", with all three stanzas, became the national anthem of the Weimar Republic (1922). The Nazi party later changed it to the first stanza - "Germany above all" - which was most often followed by the official anthem of the NSDAP, the Horst-Wessel-Lied.
To the change of the lyrics that Rammstein cleverly used - "Deutschland über allen" - based on my (I believe) far more accurate translation "Germany above everything", the literal German meaning of "über allen" would be "Germany above everyone". So this is the slight distinction - while the initial motivation of the hymn was to prioritize the unification of Germany, the motivation of the Nazi party was to put Germany above every other nation and to dominate the world. This is, in my humble opinion, what Rammstein tried to reflect with this slight change of lyrics.
Tl;dr: In summary, the verse "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" is from the first stanza of "Das Lied der Deutschen" written by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben in 1841. Originally meant to emphasize German unity, the verse became associated with the Nazi regime. The post-WWII German national anthem uses the third stanza instead. The line "Germany above all" can be more accurately translated as "Germany above everything." Rammstein's adaptation, "Deutschland über allen," translates to "Germany above everyone," possibly reflecting the intention of the Nazi party that misused the verse.

I understand that this video is hard to take in as a Dutchy, I think I saw it when I watched the first part and particularly watched you and your reaction. But believe for me as a German it's just as difficult each time I see the video.
Deutschland, man will dich lieben und kann dich hassen.
I always wanted to leave Germany and if it's just across the border in Venlo. I wanted to leave because I could bear our history any longer. That was stupid because it was just 12 years of our history, with a thousand years that wasn't all bad. History that gave us many beautiful things, classical music like Bach, Wagner, Beethoven, Literature, Goethe, Brothers Grimm, Schiller, Paintings by Dürrer for instance, talking about literature, Germany gave us Gutenberg and his printing press, maths, physics, and science in general and engineering.
I did eventually emigrate, not to the Netherlands but Australia. Here I learned to appreciate Germany and I learned to love it. Because I learned that not only Germany has a dark period in her history. The British do, the French do, even the Dutch have a few shadows on their history. Germany isn't perfect. She never tried to be perfect I think. But Germany isn't worse than any other European nation in the context of the entire history.
    Vergeben, aber nicht vergessen.

Don't worry, you absolutely nailed it.
To me the search for the real and true meaning of the video/lyrics is pointless and it is the point. This song is the embodiment of Rammstein. They are all about ambivalence and provocation. The Germania character for example is not a godess but the idea of the german nation/nationhood that is shown attending different situations in history that are closely related to the question of what is germany/german. Casting a black women is a deliberate provocation. It is the statement, that the modern german identity might as well be depicted by a black woman, because she is part of it.
I hate the vocals of Rammstein, which evoke feelings of hearing nazi-propaganda/speeches, but I like the music. I like the ambivalent emotions that the imagery and style trigger in me. The bombastic live-shows, the awe inspiring gigantic stages/pyros. The feeling of beeing small, but at the same time being part of something big. The feeling of safety of having a mass of sameness/conformity around you, but at the same time the fear, that this mass turns against you and you have no chance to withstand.
Did you know that they evolved from a extreme leftist punk scene and at the same time they are accused of being a far right band. It's true, that you can take some lines of the lyrics and interpret them as nationalistic. I think they are doing a great job of never explaining the true meaning and just throwing stuff out there to have people tear themselfs apart in the quest to find it. At the same time I think everything they do is cheap, effect-seeking and provocation for the sake of provocation. So yes, it's all about ambivalence with these guys.
P.S.: Don't let anyone tell you you didn't understand the lyrics of "Du hast". They write it as"you have", but they pronounce and use it more like "you hate" and that's absolutely deliberate.

Leonbergers symbolize the peaceful Germans in contrast to the aggressive Shepherds. The beginning at 16 A.D. marks the death of Arminius, who had defeated the Romans in 9 A.D. His brother is involved in it. It's the beginning of a rivalry between 2 brothers as a basic theme of German history (Catholics vs Protestants, Prussians against Austrians, West vs East Germany). The red laser marks the location of the "tribal hero", which Germania (black woman, red lips, golden armor) cherishes more and longer than necessary. The Piano outtro reminds me of a Music box: All actors stand still, it's the camera that moves around. To me they look like Chess figures without much choice to act. They are Pawns in a game.

  • @JakobFischer60
    @JakobFischer60 Год назад +5

16 A.D. the Romans came back to the Teutoburg forest to see what was left of the roman legions that were destroyed some years ago. They found skeletons hanging on trees and they buried them. The scene refers to that event. Why Germania was cutting Tills heat off, I do not understand. She is the winner of the fight and makes him proud to be german? He looses his head? Sometimes nobody knows what things are meaning, sometimes I doubt that even Rammsteiners knows.
Btw. The site of the fight was in Kalkriese, close to Osnabrueck, they made a museum there.

I have heard that "uber allen" means "over everyone" - meaning Germany is more important than the people.
The swapping of the eye-patches points to a German saying where people would fail to see the faults in certain sectors of the political spectrum, so the Germans would say that someone is "blind to the Right" or "blind to the Left". This isn't my analysis, but something I remember from a previous in-depth analysis.
The RAF was called the Baader-Meinhof Gang in English speaking countries, if I remember correctly.

Germania is dressed in black, red and gold... Which are the colours of the national flag nowadays and also after revolution and national convent in Frankfurt Paulskirche in 1848. It was replaced in 1871 by black-white-red, first in North Germany and then all over the country during the Kaiserreich. and the Nazi flag (Hakenkreuzflagge) is also made of black, white and red. These 3 colours you also see in the scene with the astronauts, the red thing (maybe alien or Lucifer?) and the dogs...

The "Deutschlandlied" and the phrase "Deutschland über alles" was written in the context of a germany split up in many little "kingdoms" or "Fürstentümer" (don't know what's that called in english).
The writer himself was on Helgoland that nice little island in the middle of nowhere somewhere in the Nordsee. So he was "far away" from what used to be germany later on. Especially at that times it must have felt much more further away from home then today. So he probably was a little homesick.
Sitting there far from home he had that idea of a unified germany. That leads to the line "Deutschland über alles". Though the "third reich" used that line for the thought of germany and gernans beeing superior above all other countries and "races".
That was not the intention of the man who wrote it.
Btw the name "third reich" came from the idea of a first reich which was the germany founded in 1871 with a "Kaiser" in charge followed by a "second reich" which was the first try of a democratic germany also known as "Weimarer Republik" because it was declared in the city of Weimar followed by the so called "third reich" which was meant to be for thousend years (which leads to the german word of "Tausendjähriges Reich") but in fact only lasted for 12 years.
Thinking this way further on it would be followed by a "fourth reich" which would be the divided post war germany and lead to a "fifth reich" which would be the germany of today. Fortunately nobody with a brain uses this phrase anymore.

Here is my interpretation of the video and an a explanation of the German history in the video:
Germania is indeed the same person in different era's of the history of the German lands. Red is an important colour in the history. Gold also refers to the Holy Roman Empire and its flag, which was a pré-descesor of Germany. The German lands consisted of many different states, most of them formed during late Roman times/beginning of the Middle Ages. The normal people did not have the greatest life, in contrast with the nobility and the church, who had it way better most often. In the second half of the Middle Ages, the church started to get bigger and richer fast. The German lands united in 1871 after they were victorious in their war with France, lead by the Prussians, the most important German state by that time. They chose the king of Prussia as German Emperor. After the fell of the German Kaiserreich at the end of WW1, the new born Weimar republic was strugling a lot, which would lead to the rise of National Socialism. The brown uniforms are the Sturmabteilung, the black uniform, which is both goodlooking and terrifying, is indeed the Schutzstaffel. After W2, Germany was split in two. In western Germany, there were communist terrorist groups, most famous was the Rote Armee Fraction.

If you read the outro you will see that "The black women" is "Germania" the personification of Germany. Taking a black woman made many people angry (of the right wing) and showing some members of the band as victims as prisoners of the KZ made the "left wing" angry. And monks eating "Germania" (which I think represents the war on religion 1618-1648) made the rest of the republic angry. Also the moment when "Germania" was taken hostage, representing the RAF-Terror made many people mad.
The only I can criticize is that only the dark periods of german history were shown, but this was not a "Love-song" on Germany but should express the love-hate relationship to germany.
But in the end "Rammstein" is a reason to learn german, because many fans want to understand the lyrics.
"So jung und doch so alt" could also interpreted in the younger history: West- and Eastgermany first divided after WWII and unified in the 1990´s, which would correlate better to video in my opinion.
Sorry about my long text, but I realy love Rammstein, not because of their firework(alone), but beause of the issue, that they leave space by thinking about, what they want to say.

You asked for the different meaning of "Deutschland, Deutschland über allen". The original Deutschland, Deutschland über alles (1st verse of the German hymn) was written after the end of the Napoleon wars, when many Germans hoped, that the "Kleinstaaterei" (the devide in many German small states) would be over, but the aristocracy hat no interest in building a unified German state. Therefore the verse was the expression of the desire to build a German state: Germany over all the small German states. In the 3rd Reich the verse was the expression of an nationalist feeling: Germany was more worth then any other country. Therefore 1st verse in the German Federal Republic is not banned, but not sung. We only sing the 3rd verse nowadays.
Rammstein deviation "über allen" has more a meaning individual insted of states. Therefore I think Deutschland über allen is referring to, that Germany is more worth then any individual (domestic because of dying for your country and individuals in other countries because of the idiology of Herrenmenschen (master race)).

    Nice video. I subscribed & liked! :)
I wrote in my first posting about the reasonst and the backgroud of Rammstein Changing Deutschland über Alles to Deutschland über Allen. Maybe you can read that again.
Further I explained the sacrificing of the Romans in the trees a little more detailed and why that happened in the part of Germany, that wasn't conquered by the Romans.
I didn't explain many things in this video:
Because I'm lazy I skipped some very short scenes and stuff, that happened in the background and isn't noticed by many watchers of this video. Maybe I will integrate those scenes one day into my bigger info-posting.
    1) World War One Zeppelins over London and searchlights trying to catch them.
    2) The concrete Statue at 3:24 under the scanner beam in a very short fraction of a second in the original video. I think it's a part of the German memorial for the German unity /re-unification (but I'm not sure. The scene is too short)
    3) In the background of the scene with the priests eating from the body of Germania, are deer with antlers visable in the background.
    4) The guy with the red head and red clothing who helps giving birth to the Leonberger dog seems to be one of the judges of our highest court, the constitution court (Bundesverfassungsgericht).
Maybe other users know more or I will do some research when I'm in the mood.
    Greetings
    Mega

since you seem to be the resident Germany history expert i wanted to know, whats the meaning behind the cows when germania is giving birth to the puppies? they have white blankets with medical red crosses on them and i know Rammstein doesnt do anything without some meaning behind it. Ive seen their video lots of times and only just now realized there were cows.

Yes, the black woman is the same one all of the time in different outfits and times of history. She is Germania. In history she was a made up, artificial figure and was always white. Rammstein made her black in this video.

The " Lützowsche Freikorps" used black uniforms, red shirts, and gold buttons.Thats were the colours came from

Leonberger? I doubt that Rammstein, which grew up in eastern Germany had any clue of a dogs race that almost got extinct. Who made that story up? Everyone loves it but in my opinion it is complete b...shit.
But I also do not understand the role of the church in the birth of the new Germany. Not for Rammstein.
Btw. the dogs of the Bader-Meinhof-Band were german shepherds, because at that time police squads with german shepherds were all around. 1972. One of my brothers was a student, the other one was a police officer.

The puppies in the birthing scene are in fact Leonbergers. German Shepherd puppies are quite different in appearance. As for who decided to use them is anyone's guess but it may have been a band member, it may not. Flake isn't dressed as a priest here either but rather as a judge from the Bundesgerichtshof. It's a political and judicial rebirth of Germany rather than one with religious overtones being described in the scene.
