I was really young when he passed, but it was how he passed that will stick with the young me forever. After seeing his funeral on T.V. and how many people he touched, which included Diana Ross in making this song within weeks of his passing, is a testament in itself of how special of a person he was. Rest easy King.

I think it was American Master on PBS which did a documentary on Marvin and if I remember right it went into detail about Diana's relationship with him.
Obviously it all came out in this song.

This is probably actually the greatest single she ever released. If it have been released on Motown, it would have been a global number one. But as it is, her black audience took this to number one R&B and made it one of the top 5 biggest R&B singles of the year!

I had forgotten how much I loved this song. I have been sitting here playint over and over even though I have it. When this song was first released Diana said it was dedicated to Marvin and i was annoyed. I thought it was just an attempt ot capitalize on their old association. I couldn't see what it had to do with him. It didn't stop me from loving this song at all, but i was annoyedAll these years later, seeing this video for the first time, now I understand what he meant to her. An artist, I am a very visual person. this video explained it all. Now i can love the song without reservation. How beautiful this video is and it adds so much to hte song., Thank you !

Lionel was a master craftsman at writing/producing these incredible ballads and Diana's emotional vocals are superb. Love those vintage Motown clips too of Marvin, Tammi Terrell, original Temptation Paul Williams and Supreme Florence Ballard. :(

A friend of mine and and his dad would occasionally give me a lift when walking to school back in the 80s in their Oldsmobile Delta 98 and it seemed like this song was always on the radio when i opened the back door and climbed into those plush gm seats escaping the frigid cold, philly power 99 fm, brings back so many memories.

My mom's favorite artist....the love of her sent her this cassette(tape) she listened to it often. When she fell ill with cancer, we were not speaking terms. She called me and said I have 6 months. Within a week I was with her she passed at 50.
When I was cleaning up her car, this cassette was in her player on this song. Thank You For giving us this song and the gift of unconditional love.
