  • In this video i compare two surfboards with the same volume. I have always wondered how a midlength would perform, as most are around my recommended volume. In this video i compare riding the Mark Phipps One Bad Egg and a range of Matta Surfboards.

    I’ve been riding short boards for 25 years and found it hard adjusting to a 6’10 One Bad Egg with the 2+1 set up. So i changed it to a thruster and put in the FCS II Performer SUP Tri Fin Set.
    Surfs Great

      I think fin experimentation is definitely the way forward with a board like that.

      I second this. I hated this board with a 2+1, sluggish and horrible. Loads better as a thruster.

      @@geoffgeoff5824 Thanks. I'll try it as a thruster with my Goliath fins.

    I now after a couple of different fin sets, use a twin plus trailer fin set up. It really lifts the board, holds on bottom turns and good release. Specific.. AMt fins on a 7,2 mid length... Best set so far

      Great advice. Thank you for your insights after experimenting with fin combos.

    I just got a mid length and rode it yesterday for the first time. It was not what I expected. I surfed short boards as a kid. Then switched to longboard as a grown up. I’m surfing more the past few years and getting into better shape. I’m finally down to a 7’8”. It catches waves great and is fast, but I could not turn it. I started figuring it out a bit but was still disappointed. I’ve been watching a bunch of videos and now I see the problem. I assumed I’d jump on the thing was medium spread out stance and it would just turn like a short board. Turns out you gotta get way back on the tail. The rail is so long, that you gotta raise the tip out of the water a bit so you are only using the back of the board that is shaped like a short board. ruclips.net/video/jqHuJKTjPyo/видео.html

      Yes, I think it's definitely a different approach to riding a shortboard.

    Take it out in head high + with some power. The longer rail line is very pleasurable in larger surf. It has less width in the tail than you short boards so it will have less squirt in the smaller, weaker waves. Took me a while to get used to my OBE and now it’s my favorite in larger surf. Have a 5.10 puddle jumper for small surf and a 7,2 OBE for bigger surf. Also, upgrade that centre fin to decent 7 inch and you should get more drive. But the OBE definitely needs a wave with some power to feel the magic so take it out at decent Croyde or downend. Just my two cents

      What would you recommend for a beginner to intermediate looking to do more turns and snaps in smaller waves. It seems an egg is perfect in terms of catching waves and the stability but for turns on smaller waves what would suggest

    Concave gives lift if you're use to riding a short stubby board riding a longer board will feel different. Your turns will be more drawn out, not as skaty as what you're use too 🤙😷🇺🇲

    • @BigGuyBoardsSurfshop
      @BigGuyBoardsSurfshop  2 года назад +1

      Thanks. That was definitely what i experienced. I wonder how that lift will translate to better waves. Hopefully the pulled in tail will compensate. I'm not used to a continuous double. What does that do compared to single to double?

    • @larrydowling5213
      @larrydowling5213 2 года назад

      @@BigGuyBoardsSurfshop basically, the double splits the thruster. It's another way to channel the water out the tail. The single concave upfront provides a good plaining surface for drive and the double concave in the rear loosens up the board. The double concave will actually channel the water into two streams through the fins and out the tail. 🤙😷🇺🇲

    Great review (but , with all due respect awfully annoying with the nauseating "bad" anytime you say one bad egg.
