- Double Dragon Gaiden Rise Of The Dragons arrives on the Nintendo Switch and while I've been excited for this one, I also have concerns like, why have they introduced roguelike elements. Let's find out if it works!
The Double Dragon brothers return in this roguelite addition to the iconic beat 'em up franchise.
Prepare to throw down the Double Dragon way in this fresh addition to the iconic beat ‘em up franchise. It’s the year 199X, and nuclear war has devastated New York City leaving its citizens to fight for survival as riots and crime engulf the streets. The city has been overtaken by criminal gangs who terrorize its ruins as they fight for total dominance. Unwilling to endure these conditions any longer, young Billy and Jimmy Lee take it upon themselves to drive the gangs out of their city.
Explore the early beginnings of the young Double Dragon brothers as they take on both new and familiar enemies in this alternate story. In this fresh roguelite take, every playthrough is a brand new chance at new action. Featuring a unique and dynamic level structure, the difficulty of the missions you take on will change depending on the order you have selected them.
Tag in and out as the classic duo Billy and Jimmy, switch it up with Marian and Uncle Matin, or experiment with 9 additional unlockable characters, each with their own special moves and unique playstyles. With 2 player local co-op, the action quadruples as you and a friend clean up the mean streets.
Key Features:
- TAG TEAM ACTION - Choose two fighters and seamlessly switch between them, giving you a multitude of strategies for devastating combos, defensive and offensive moves.
- BEAT ‘EM UP WITH ROGUELITE ELEMENTS- Experience endless playthrough possibilities with a dynamic mission select function; the order in which you choose your mission will affect mission length, number of enemies, and overall difficulty. Choose where you improve with randomized purchasable upgrades for your characters at the end of each mission, or save your cash to revive your players in-mission.
- 13 UNIQUE PLAYABLE CHARACTERS - Start the fight with Billy, Jimmy, Marian, and Uncle Matin. Earn tokens along the way to unlock a diverse roster of 9 more characters, each with their own playstyle and strengths. Strategically choose your fighting duo by taking into account each characters’ strengths and weaknesses.
- SHAPE YOUR EXPERIENCE AND REWARDS - Adjust game difficulty to affect the amount of tokens earned per session and use those tokens to unlock content from the Token Shop including characters, tips, and more. Modifier can be used to enter permadeath or even infinite mode.
- LOCAL CO-OP - Grab a friend and clean up the city streets together in local co-op mode that supports up to two players.

I've had the game for 3 days and just found out you can switch characters during battle. 🤯 Great game
Always loved this series. Super Double Dragon or 4 was my favorite my Dad and I palyed many hours from arcades to NES and SNES
Been looking forward to this one! Thanks for covering it Alex!
Wonderful review - I am definitely picking this up - I love a good beatem up - playing on a train ride or when I get stuck on a rainy day 😊
I'm really enjoying this game and this is roguelike done right. Have unlocked 5 characters already and have enjoyed how the level design has changed with each play through.
Looking forward to unlocking the rest of the character this evening.
Played a bit of this early today, super fun 💪🏼🎮🐉
Not a huge fan of best em ups, but igotta say this game looks awesome!
I've been watching people playing this game on streams and I had to say it looks really fun so I'm really tempted to get it.
Its an interesting concept they have here, I will see more on this and think about getting it
Is Bimmy an unlock able character?
Just the Billy you see!
Just got this very excited to play double dragon 2 was my favorite
how is the performance? ive heard it is a bit bad??
No problems for me
I want this, i NEED this. 😋
Hopefully you're aware the levels (& bosses) evolve differently depending on the order you select levels (?)
Yeah, played it through twice and don’t notice much difference with it and did completely different order
@@SwitchCorner that's wild; b/c each level extends the stage by 1 section & most of the bosses (with the exception of maybe 1) are at a different stage of evolution depending on how late you encounter them (sometimes they even look completely different) The later you take them on the harder they'll be; & you can miss out on whole sections of a level
Casino for example; if it's your level 1 you fight ol girl on the casino floor at her weakest. If it's your level 2 you fight through to the back office & take her on there. As your level 3 you go through a secret passage & fight your way through caves & up a mountain to fight her in front of her hideout. If you play it last you fight your way through said hideout & faceoff on the rooftop (& by this point she's going all-out)
Boss-wise....level 1 Anubis for example you fight as a regular dude. Level 4 Anubis is practically god-form...
Gotta say it's really been giving the game some legs
i want to play a remake of battletoads and double dragon. that was my favorite game on my nes! never got after the stage in space😅
The token are actually *super* easy to get, once you understand the system.
And the characters are some of the cheapest things to unlock.
Since this game's first announcement I have said " I wish they had the team behind river city girls development this game '. From the reviews I have seen I still think that way. The art style and everything just doesn't do it for me. I may pick this game up on a deep 50 % off sale.
I've been a double dragon since the NES. I haven't had much time with this one yet, but so far I'm a little disappointed. I thought they knocked it out of the park with double dragon neon and it was a great refresh for the series. The limited move set is my biggest complaint so far, maybe that will improve after I get more time with it.
Why am I not collecting tokens?
You will see them lower right when you finish a level, you can only spend them if you beat the game or die and it will eventually give you the option to cash out if you can’t afford to continue
Sounds pretty cool, I like grind and LOVE unlocking characters! Do they have Bimmy in this one? Lol! 😆
Boy, those graphics sure are UGLY though!
enjoyed playing this .. fun
It seems alright, but I’ll probably wait a little bit or for a sale. Have too many others I’m just a bit more interested in currently. Thanks for another great and honest review!
Reminds me of street fighter 😆
This looks fun but it doesn't look as enticing as SoR4 or TMNTSR
So NO RPG elements? Lame i thought it have a lvling up system like TMNT Shredders Revenge. Just save your money for the TMNT DLV coming soon adding a slew of extra costumes content levels etc.
Alex does a better review than ign
Thank you Graham! Funny you say that, I’m launching a website for all of this next week lol
You lost me on Roguelike......
As I say, it's really been oversold in the marketing!
I hate, rogue or rogue lite/like. I want DD old school.
looks better than Turtles. I was a bit disappointed about Turtles after all the praise. tbh going rogue like in a beatem up is the way to go.
As a longtime Double Dragon fan, my impression of this game, based on the reviews and video footage, is mixed. It seems clear that the developers had a lot of love and respect for the previous games: the many homages and inspirations from the earlier games are clear to see.
And I also like the idea of a beat-em-up rogue-lite with the ability to modify some of the potentially annoying elements of the rogue-lite genre, along with some other more general gameplay settings.
BUT that character art style - an awful mix of semi-chibi/semi-arcade/NES - is terrible. 🤮 I wish they went with more normally proportioned characters or (if they had to go for a less realistic look) picked a more appealing chibi and/or cartoony style, ala River City Ransom or Scott Pilgrim vs The World. It's too bad, because, overall, I do like the background art, the animation seems nice and fluid, and the gameplay/mechanics look promising. I just hate the character style. So I think I might have to skip this one.
From how the characters look u will have to skip it???? 🤦🏾♂️ wow
@@zerotattsreviews9767 What can I say. I'm a shallow guy. 😂 Plus, like a lot of folks, I've got a mile-long backlog, so I am far from pressed for new games, even 2D pixel art beat'em ups. But to each their own.
There is a huge Doube Dragon fangame/rom hack currently in the works, so I might try that if/when it's finished to get my DD fix.
Caio.
This looks like a kiddie game that doesn't belong in the DD franchise. Doesn't resemble or represent what DD is in the slightest bit. Wow what a huge disappointment
