- Yamaha T700 real world test of recently fitted 25 litre Safari Tank and testing of the latest generation of open cartridge compression fork internals from Rally Raid Products. I'll also fit Rally Raid Bar Risers and after all that work, I'll go for a ride with Alex a long time riding buddy who loves his 2017 BMW GSA 1200. I'll be riding my 2012 KTM690 that I rode from London to Sydney.
We'll finish up with the popular subscriber question and answer session.
For those new to MAD TV I'd encourage you to look around the channel, we have international adventures, bike reviews and and Chris Birch extreme videos and other stuff and most recently some great films from Nick Sanders. Occasionally we go live for some fun. Here are some links to help you find the good stuff.

Our pleasure! Get better.
Hope you get better quickly Tore. Same for me here, been knocked out all week 😮💨
@@everythingtenere Only like a mild flu for me, but the test was positive so have to keep inside for a week, wich suck because I have a bike project in the shop...
Another great review and garage session - your experience and practical sense really shines. Remain intrigued with the T7 as a mid weight traveling adventure bike but you have me convinced that my 2019 690 needs to remain in the stable.
I can't get rid of my 690. It's just not happenng :). But I do love the T700 for different reasons.
Ozzie bloke like you on Baileys! Never thought I'd hear the day...!! Good stuff, love the channel, you are a big part of why I bought a Honda CRF-250l for green laining in the UK, after being off bikes for about 15 years. Thanks Dave and also to your mates Clubbie and Nugget.
Much appreciated

Steinar - it's a review. Getting back to adventures, Australian mateship is a culturally unique thing that many from other countries take a little while to grasp. You seem to be having troubles. Australian mateship is sometimes rude, irreverent, loud and aggressive. It is a quintessential element of who we are, perhaps a legacy of our convict past. Sadly the rough edges, the interesting edges, of that culture are being eroded smooth to a featureless grey, due to political correctness, and a whole heap of worldwide 'movements' in recent years.
Excellent look at the T-7 with the Safari Tank. Thanks for the added footage with the KTM 690. You live in off road rider’s Heaven. 👍
Yes I do! I'm blessed but I never take it for granted.
Thanks Dave for answering my question. Your video explained it well, and to go over it at question time was appreciated by myself. I'm not convinced I'd change my Tenere 700, although it was a consideration. I'm really looking forward to your Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro review as I also own one, and luv it (as I luv my Tenere 700). 👍😁
Glad to help!
Dave on the tools and the Baileys is the best! 😂
You're certainly right there.
This has got to be the premium adventure bike channel in terms of extremely detailed tech and endurance/reliability testing. The 690 (701) is my preferred platform.
Thank you
Very thorough and honest review let’s hope people understand what you were saying about the tank being very useful though it should not be topped up all the time and not focus on a few words like feels too heavy and extra weight and not buy Safari’s offering
These true long range tanks are very useful for those of us that like the long desert trips and out of the way places. One of the best offerings from Safari was the 32 /35 litre tank for the DR it transformed the bike giving me the freedom to explore the CSR and may other places while also providing great protection. Like you said they don’t weight that much if they are not full and you only need to fill them when you need to.
I am afraid the pressure from the trend for the bikes to be as light as possible is being felt by Safari and other manufacturers who are now making smaller “long range tanks” like the 15 litre tank they made for the wr 250 who’s usefulness was borderline. On a recent conversation I had with Safari re a tank for the CRF 300 they stated most people just wanted a small tank with 100 or so extra ks and are very much against the bigger tanks. Seems that if they make a tank for the 300 it will another 15 litre small tank and not the 20 or 24 litre tank that is needed and will complement the bikes ability and protect it.
I find this very frustrating. Yes the bike will be more unyieldy with all they fuel in the tank but not as unmanageable as it would be with the same fuel load strapped all over the bike in 6 bladders.
My friends raised an eyebrow at the huge dr tank to begin with but after a few trips they saw how much easier it makes life in remote areas and now they all have one on theirs.
Well said Tony.
I love these roads you guys ride on, so neat. My younger days we had a few trails and roads like that, but today to many regulations. There use to be clubs on private land, but not know.
Yes, ours is getting cut back as well.
This Chanel just getting better and better👌👍👍👍
Thank you. I appreciate the comment. I'm trying new things and giving it a go.
Great vid and chat about the suspension improvements. Would be curious to see a front and rear wheel wet weight measurement of this T7, with larger tank, all racks and basic tools but without luggage
Yes, I'm intensely interested in finding an accurate scale to do this.
24:40 As an engineer I can tell you, you are right. People often think 'stiffer = better and stronger', but this is just not the case. A lower stiffness with the same inertia/mass attached to it, essentially acts as a mechanical low pass filter. That means that it absorbs more higher frequency vibrations and is more robust against impacts (because those contain most energy in higher frequencies).
The only risk with this is that the mass + stiffness eigenfrequency might be low enough to excite whilst riding, and that will induce such large amplitude oscillations that it can destroy the mount. But, Yamaha designed that bracket to fit GPS/phones etc, so I am sure they've done their homework and made sure the eigenfrequency is high enough (or damped enough) not to be an issue.
Another interesting place where people mistakenly believe stiffer = better, is with carbon fiber. They think carbon fiber parts are the 'strongest you can get', but that is simply not true. A high spec glass fiber is much stronger and tougher (better against impacts) than carbon fiber both for same weight and volume. The only property carbon fiber excels at is in stiffness per weight or unit volume.
Thanks for that. I'm with you on all of that. My mate Philippe and I have produced fibre glass protectors out of woven glass that work a treat
The camel tank is awesome the extra range is great. I sold a kidney and bought touratech suspension and couldn't be happier.
Nice Dave & Clubby
Cool gear nice bikes
Love the 701
hahahaah that wrenching is hilarious!
At 6'2" (189cm) height I've always had to be in a crouched mode, race attack position on my dirt bikes. When I get my T7 I will get some bar riser to a point the I can be comfortable while standing.
Did you note those bar risers can be moved up and away?
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Yes, even went to Ralley Raid's web site and checked them out. Don't know yet but if the GPS unit mounted up on the cross beam blocks my view of the stuff going to make it hard to precisely pick my line will them use there top bar clamp and mount there. It would be nice to have the GPS up high in the field of view to keep eyes up and forward but at the same time need to see those rain ruts or round rocks.
Hi Erik, I'm 1,88 m and lowered my pegs instead of rising the bar. This improves also riding position with a slightly improved knee angle.
Eric I'm also tall at 2 m. You're going to love the t7. Arguably one of the best bikes for standing for tall guys. If you need additional space you can always get Evo pegs and install them in the lower position and check out the rally raid bar risers.
@@Toonces311 Is Evo pegs the full name? I Googled it and came up with MX race pegs with set screws.
I'm really keen to see some more mods like Safari tanks come out for the CB500X. Great to see some good stuff coming out for the T7 too.
More to come!
Have enjoyed that session the rally raid mounts and risers are pretty cool. Dave how old is clubby?👍😀 Tell him the Duke wants to know. He was talking in his new hard enduro I'm thinking sent you guys riding hard and enough. Cheers
That hollow feeling when you drop a washer, bolt, nut etc. somewhere very hard to get at!
Great review of the Tenere bits and pieces.
Thanks 👍
Lovely to see the old 690 getting on a run. Be great to get on a new trip with our 701s 🤔
Yes. We may have to meet half way. On another note, I wonder where your 690 is now. Do we know? Can we find out?
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I’m still up for a trip back to Kyrgyzstan and the surrounding Stans. Visas etc seem to be relaxing as they welcome tourism and the cash it brings to the economy
Loving the videos mate, cheers. I was wondering do you notice any progression in performance/handling etc when comparing your old 690 to a newer one or the similar 701 you were riding in Tropical punch? Can the old bike still hold its head up high?
I ask as occasionally decent second hand 690s come up at an affordable price and even with the added cost of adapting them for longer riding they would be cheaper than anything other than 390s or crf300s.
Cheers
Paul
Yes there has been significant progression in so many ways. But I reckon the deal of the century is to buy a low km 690 (check what year models on the Rally Raid site) and fit one out like mine, without the tower. It would have easily done the Kimberley ride.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Thanks. It would certainly make a cool project and as ever the bike would be better than me anyway. Have good one👍.
Great add on with the ktm 690, great break from all the T7 talk.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for another great video Dave. Interesting your comments on the 690 still being your favorite bike. Keen to know if it would still be your favorite bike for another London to Sydney ride. For me having to worry about fuel pumps and KTM electrical gremlins is a deal breaker on that sort of trip. Would you still take the 690 again or a T7 instead?
My 690, which I still have, is reliable and I haven't had any further trouble with it.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I suppose at the end of the day it comes down to "better the devil you know than the one you don't".
I'd say they were two good measures of baileys. Love your aussie tracks and keep up the great vids.from a wet and muddy wales🏴
Thanks Leslie. Yes they were.
Thanks for sharing Dave, great riding country there.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great ride. Beautiful scenery. Ride along someday with you mate.
Thanks
Since the T7 carries its weight so high wouldn’t the Camel Adventures auxiliary tank, that sits below the seat, be a better option? Second observation is regarding the slope of the tank and the fuel cap that eliminate/limit the ability to install a tank bag.
I would much rather sacrifice a tank bag than have my fuel be so exposed to tipovers like the camel. No thank you on that.
@@thefriedpiper With my soft panniers on the bike I don’t think the tank would suffer in a lay down.
@@PapaDougsAdventures01 to each their own but 90 percent of my rides I don't need my sides but about 100 percent of them I'm dropping the bike. Only takes one time to have a major disaster especially in forest fire territory.
I'n still looking for tank bags. I think Giant Loop have one, just not the Fandango Pro.
Excellent video, interesting, entertaining and competent like always on this channel. Question: for you, 690 or 701?
701!
I have the 2017 GS Rallye that looks like Alex's. I love it and ride it on unpaved county and forest service roads here in East Texas that can have some serious pot holes! Do you know if he has done any suspension mods/upgrades to it? I'm thinking if I were doing that on the stock suspension it would be pretty rough! My stock suspension is at 17K miles and starting to feel worn out.
Alex doesn't do anything to his bikes.......apart from riding them until the wheels fall off.
If you stuck with the standard springs in the forks, did you use any of the spacers provided with the fork kit ? I fitted the same open cartridge kit and went for the next heavier springs (no spacers) provided by RallyRaid as I want to use the bike for long hauls as well but think it may have been too much. I may go back to the stock spring and pre-load it up.
Experiment
Just a recommendqtion, you should change your compression settings. with the current settings close colors are getting combined in one solid block, wich makes video with pavement, sand or concrete very blocky. you can see that in the first pov ride shot extremly clear.
just a recommendation, love the content :-)
Actually bit rate wasn't high enough. Have a look at the latest videos.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV bitrate describes the amount of compression

Hi Dave, it would be great if you could show abit more information about where you are and the tracks/route you are taking. Love your work mate, keep it up!
I'm sorry Craig I don't want to get into specifics. I leave occasion hints, but to frank some of the track are starting to be over used and locals are getting cranky, particularly when people blast along the roads at warp speed.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV thanks Dave. I understand.
I'd keep the OEM tank and add the Camel ADV tank which I believe is 1.7 gallons. I did it to my Africa Twin and it works great.
Yes that's another solution.
Dave, can I ask regarding your recording while travelling (I'm assuming your using a GoPro 10 or similar) are you using voice control to start and stop recording or do you use a wireless remote?
No. Just record when I need to.
Thanks for the vide. Unfortunate timing for safari tanks. With the new long range model of the T7 leaked, it seems like their low hanging twin tank is a better solution.
Interesting times.
Learned a lot from that, nicely mixed-up content, kept me engaged all the way through!.
Great.
Dave, you mention the back being good a few time, is it just stock sprung to your weight?
No. It's the Rally Raid due piston pds rear adventure shock.
If you require the extra fuel range it sounds like it would be better to invest in bladders or bottles, particularly as you can mount this extra fuel much lower than where this extra would sit in the Safari tank.
If you're not doing it often I agree. But have a look at our Kimberley Adventure when I was filling up each day. It was a pain.
Is this new fork upgrade available as a diy kit ? Or even to supply to local bike mech ? Love my T7 , the suspension is the only thing letting it down .
Get a suspension specialist to fit it.
In the video, you talk about the new open fork Rally Raid.
Is this the Open Cartridge Fork 616 sold on the Rally Raid website or is it an innovated model that will be launched?
The one sold 616.
Think that if your a serious off road needing range, the T7 inset the right bike.
Mine is mainly a road bike which will be used on a Trans Euro Trail trip this year, but don’t need the range you need.
What’s the current spring rate in the forks?
Sorry mate can't recall but I will know in a couple of months when we do some more testing. They were heavier than stock.
The T7 looks like a Norden fighter. Minus the engine, I think there might be convergence in this segment.
ha ha
Rally Raid upgraded T700 suspension on trails ...or KTM 890R... What's the winner?
The equation is not an easy solve, when the money factor comes into it.
I'm intrigued to know why you think you can outride ABS on your Tenere T7. Chris Birch recently said he can't outride modern ABS systems. Perhaps you can do a video of how you can outride your ABS system, to show us mere mortals how an expert such as yourself can outride ABS.
Mike, there is ABS and there is ABS. The T700 ABS is primitive compared to that on Yamaha high end road bikes, KTM1290 and 890, latest BMWs, Ducatis and many other brands and models. If you haven't already, I'd encourage you to view my reviews of the 1290 and 890 who have the latest iterations of abs, which are noticeably more advanced than previous years models. I'm absolutely in agreement with Chris Birch on those models, but not the T700. I love my T700 for many reasons, ABS is not one of them. :). When Chris Birch refers to modern he's talking about in the last couple of years. It might be worth opening up the discussion to other T700 riders, who are mortal. A confident significant proportion of them turn it off when travel at pace in the dirt.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I would like to second everything that has been said is correct. The t7 ABS is an on road only system in my opinion. There have been a few times when I've almost overrun the trail because I forgot to turn it off.
Love the vids, but if you had a chin mount for the GoPro it would feel more immersive to the viewer especially when you stand up all you see is the road. Just my two cents worth 👍🏻
I use a range of mounts but prefer from the helmet for these everyday vids.
Surely it's easier to fit a higher Bend bars from protaper ?
Alternatives.
Awesome
Thank you
Wondering why you keep the KTM 690 when you have a brand new 701? Is it just a sentimental thing? Also it would great if you did a side-by-side comparison review of the two bikes 2012 690 to the new Husqvarna 701 you have. Love your stuff!
Sentimental and always think of completing a Round the World on that bike. I don't think an old vs new test would be popular.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I currently have a Yamaha t7, KTM EXE 500 and 2020 Yamaha wr250f. And live in the USA Nebraska. As I told you before I love your stuff.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV i reckon an old v new test would be very popular
Haven’t ridden the T7 with the Safari tank, but it seems like they put a lot of effort into lowering the COG. Initially I thought they just slabbed a huge tank where the old one was. Well done, Safaritanks!
Yes, it's much more sophisticated. A lot of thought has gone into it. I think they've done a great job.
bought of set of Rally Raid Forks, now i wish i would have waited for 2.0 version.
They are evolving, just like new motorbike models. We want John to continue to make them better and better. No different to buy bike models. They are replaced with newer ones with updated features.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I understand 100%. This is me just being silly I'm very happy with what I have
Same happened to me 1,5 years ago with the closed cartridge version. All the marketing online and I fell for them but valving was horrendously wrong and had them revalved on a dyno 3 times until i got it right. The sent new springs to try but thats it. Finally it looks like they acknowledge and are making changes; at the time they didn't do anything.
What tires do you and Alex run on the 690 and 1200?
Pirelli Rally
All good info,thks.
Glad it was helpful!
What helmet are you using today ? I’m looking to upgrade from my old Arai…
KLiM Krios Pro. Very light. Great vision. Stable.
The KTM790 has those low-down plastic fuel tank "lobes" each side of crankcase. Could maybe aftermarket maker look at that design?
The problem is having to pump the fuel from those cells upwards into the tank I'd imagine
I’ve been saying this for a long time now.
We are getting something similar with the new t7
That would be a good solution.
Will the wrap material stickers still work on the Safari Tank?
I think you need perforated ones.
That KTM is mint 👌
I've looked after it.

Thank you.
Ah! Now I know why you said you could get 500km fuel range on your 690 RR and I couldn’t on mine on your FB feed. You either didn’t mention or I missed on FB that you had a 4th tank!
Yes I looked at your bike and you didn’t have that tank 😂😂
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I’ll have to have a closer look at your bike. Is yours on the rear opposite of the exhaust? I was figuring you had one in place of the factory air box.
@@billness2635 Yes rear opposite the exhaust. It's the Rally Raid Products solution.
Never had any ground clearance issues with the center stand?
The OEM drops once in a while, but I think it's better than others on the market.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV interesting. It would be a quality of life improvement but I've been hesitant to get one, thinking it's gonna stick everywhere on trails.
I really don't like the design of that Safari tank. It makes no sense putting additional weight on top of a bike that is already top heavy. The only resonable solution, short of replacing the original tank with a tank sitting lower and on both sides, like the KTM design, is to carry spare gas when that is needed in packs on the side. However, whoever can design a new tank with lower weight on both sides, is sure to sell a lot of them, because this has become a well know problem with the T700 and really is THE only problem with a fabulous bike, aprt from the weight distribution!
Yes it is a fantastic bike. I love riding it. But C of G is an issue when full.
Good Dat, from Pakistan
Thanks AKM
Safari tanks should of done a rear saddle tank keep the weight low ,
They've done that before.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV thinking about T7 and your comments and questions asked ,i agree start small bore before big twins , yes its top heavy and improvements could be made to rectify that looks to be coming .we all love the simplicity of the T7 ,if it had the low CG and suspension from a 890 we all be much happier ,but at the end of the day T7 is only limited by the riders skills and its poor suspension . i think guys moving from the road to Adv or new people getting into to sport ,ask not to much of the bike but themselves bit off more than they can chew in other words ,

Then go fuel bladder for that occasional stretch. I think I'll use it about once or twice a year.
