    Okay, I got to the end and Pete asked the question, what are MY favourites. Pretty easy, the new Damned one, #1, second is the Zep - All the Albums, All the Songs, third is the Clash, All the Albums, All the Songs (and incidentally, the Damned is written exactly the same way). Next is Who Invented Heavy Metal? And finally I'll go with The Big Book of Hair Metal - the layout by Voyageur/Qarto on that was immense. Thanks also to Craig for all that. Forget hoagies - beers all night on me at SeaFest in the summer (hint, hint).

      @godetonter4764 2 года назад +1

      @@shaunfulton7261 are you saying he knows a lot about NWOBHM , or he doesn't know hardly anything about NWOBHM? Lemme was not part of NWOBHM, although Motorhead were a huge influence on bands such as Tank , Venom, Trojan, Atomkraft , pre Deverill Cox era Tygers of Pantang, the first UK band known as Samurai ( the band that contributed the tracks Die Or Deliver , and Knights in Painted Castles to 1980 Guardian Records Compilation Roksnax ) , Avenger, Raven, and Jaguar. The other UK band known as Samurai recorded 1984 , and 1986 LPs for the Ebony Label. Personally I consider the years 1979 through 1982 as the true NWOBHM time-line. Although it is technically a moment in time, and a geographical term . A lot of the bands that flourished between those years shared a lot of similarities in image and sound. By 1983 a lot of these bands either made it big overseas, broke up , developed more of their own personal musical direction, or as in the case of Jaguar got haircuts to look as well as sound like Duran Duran

      I love Martin´s books, especially the ones focused on great bands that we all know and love, yet nobody seems to be interested in writing a book or two about them - except Martin. The Rainbow Story is one example. Another example would be Martin´s book on Whitesnake. That is what I appreciate the most about his work; the willingness to dig deep and come up with much needed material on groups and artists that seem somewhat under-represented and/or ignored in the book market. As for myself I just finished reading Martin´s book on Judas Priest, detailing the band´s output from 1986 and up until their latest album - Turbo Till Now. Another winner!

    So- I cannot express how important Martin's 1997 Collector's Guide was to my life. My generation came of age with grunge (gag) and there were many great bands from the 70's and 80's that were not getting any airplay, specifically bands like UFO and Thin Lizzy. What Martin did was invaluable- and some of his reviews were absolutely hilarious, thinking of Hysteria and X Factor.

  • @BigWade57
    @BigWade57 2 года назад +2

    For me too, the 1997 Collector's Guide was my first Popoff book, bought the following spring. I ended up contacting Martin, and he put me on a Metal news mailing list he and Tim Henderson used to do, in conjunction with BW&BK. I've been in occasional email contact with Martin ever since. My favorite, however, would have to be Dio: Light Beyond the Black, because back in 2006 there just wasn't anything else in detail about the Dio band albums.

    Martin, I bought your Encyclopedia Of Heavy Metal 🤘 way back in the late 90’s I believe it was’98 and the majority of yours are also mine though I didn’t agree with you as far as punk and hardcore bands so I urge you to do another one on this Subgenre particularly The Misfits and Black Flag 🏴 Cuz it’s something I know you will now appreciate; at least for the talents of these guys who fronted the band, but especially when you really hear the musical styles of a lot more of the L.A. acts like the Dead Kennedys and X. For the record though I think Rush should’ve gotten the 9’s and 10’s that you’d given them as well: Voi Vod whom have more in common with Floyd than anything earlier like Killing Technology @‘86. Love every time you are on SOT Thanks 🙏🏻 again for doing what you’re doing Mr.Poppoff! Sincerely yours, DJP and greetings from Boston, Mass (Ex- PostMortem & Kilslug

    I cant remember my first Popoff book, could have been the Collectors guide to HM of the 70's, and as Craig said those Collectors guide books (my personal favourites are the 70s and 80s)and the Southern Rock Review led me to buy stuff I maybe wouldnt have.
    It goes without saying really that all his books are great reads, though its great that he does books on lesser known bands - like his Sweet and Angel books - and I have to single out his Accept book, simply because he was gracious and generous to ask for fans to provide reminiscences and experiences about them (that he had also done with his Riot book) - mine starts on page 232.
    His general books are also great for referencing and getting some historical perspective - favourites being the Who created HM and the NWOBHM books.
    At first wasnt too sure about the Visual Biographies, but after getting the Uriah Heep and Nazareth books - as there was nothing much else about either out there - I had to also get the Lizzy, BOC and Yes, and have just preordered the Yes vol 2 - though although the text is from Time and a Word, that I also have, the whole thing feels much like those Jethro Tull 40th and 50th Anniversary boxsets where although you still get the original the additional stuff makes it really worthwhile - the pictures in the Yes Biography really take it up a level. I also have the UFO on preorder - didnt go for the Priest one as I have the Heavy Metal Painkillers book that Craig showed, as well as the Black Sabbaths. They are a bit too expensive for me to buy everything however they are definitely worth the cost for the ones that I have bought and will be buying.
    There are other great band and artist biogs out there, however you can always guarantee that a Martin Popoff book will be well worth the investment and will contain lots of info that you may not already have known - especially where he gets stories from those around the band, such as the producers and engineers.
    Lastly I would also have to mention his Flaming Telepaths - Imaginos extended and specified. Not necessarily one for the faint hearted as some of it can be a bit mind scrambling, however I have to commend the imagination and thought put into it as well as the fanstatic line drawings done by the man himself.

    My favorite part of Martins work is his love of the music and interest in focusing on both big well known bands and the smaller niche bands. Mercyful Fate, Max Webster, Angel , The Sweet, Voi Vod and etc etc are the draw for me; since few others would dedicate such time and energy on what many see as marginalized bands. WIsh I had waited for the reprint now available to have him sign it but love the book and even though it is not updated, I look at this all the time similar to how Craig talked about the heavy metal books as his number one choice. Many thanks to Craig and you, too, Pete, for this excellent discussion and presentation of Martin's works that you enjoy and to Martin as well for his ongoing participation with SoT. The Max Webster book is one I admire, and I salute Martin for his passion and resourcefulness in putting that one together. I gotta say, though, that it bummed me out a little. Collectors Guide To Heavy Metal is the best music book ive read. Its written in a casual, honest, conversational style and its hilarious. Easily the funniest reviews ever.

    This was a fun listen...hitting his site soon and grabbin a few of those highlighted.
    Hopefully that Damned book of his is hitting the rack soon...and would love it if he did an "Oh Canaduh!...The Canadian punk and new wave explosion 1977-85" If anyone can nail it ..it'd be him. That a rock chapter that needs expanding.

    Don’t have time to listen to all this now, so I don’t know if these books will be mentioned. I will listen to the whole show because I am into reading. Had to search my Kindle to find the first Popoff book I read. It was called Who Invented Heavy Metal? Picture books about bands are fine but that’s the kind of thing I like, books that take a deep look into music. Lately I’ve bought a couple picture books by Martin, the one on Heep and on Hawkwind. Great books. Haven’t had time to read them since I’ve been reading up a lot on music, subjects I’m interested in that Martin didn’t write. If you do a thing on Rock books in general I have several I would love talking about.

    I have a lot of his books. I enjoy most of them. My four favorite are his first two guides to heavy metal, the 70’s and 80’s, Black Sabbath: FAQ and his first Blue Oyster Cult book, Secrets Revealed. I believe he has books on his top 500 favorite heavy metal songs and his favorite heavy metal songs. My least favorite book is his one on Max Webster. I feel like some information is repeated too much, through interviews with various people. Some of his other books have that problem as well. But, overall, I really enjoy his books and think that he’s a great writer.

    Never read any of Martin's books but the Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal Volume 1: The Seventies and Volume 2: The Eighties are the ones I'm interested in if I can still get 'em. I'm not much of a reader but stuff like that I will read.

    Across 4 books ( Gettin' Tighter, A Castle Full of Rascals and both Royal Family volumes) Martin has written the definitive biography of Deep Purple from Shades up thru Rapture of the Deep. He should do a follow-up with the Ezrin - produced albums.

    the rush hard cover trilogy, along with the thrash metal history trilogy are all incredible. those ones all have a fantastic flow. the only issue i've had with his writing is when he ventures into the descriptive side of the actual music-you can tell he doesn't really know time signatures, or much of the theory behind stuff (or he just has his terminology all wrong), but that's a moot point. i've ordered several of his books direct from him, and every one is a fun read. he's also pro as fuck when it comes to the business side. of the 10-15 books i've mail ordered, i've NEVER had so much as a single issue. don't hesitate to order his stuff.

    My two favorite Martin books are his two collectors guides to heavy metal. Both the 70's and 80's versions. Unfortunately my dog pissed on both of them in the downstairs porcelain convenience in my little floor sitting book rack. The two CD's were unharmed in the attack. I would love to replace these as they were used all these years for reference and entertainment. So bummed they're out of print.
