I had this phone (for a short while before I fell in a river with it in my pocket). Thanks for opening Club Pinball, totally forgot about that! One of my fondest memories was finding out it shot video. We used to mess around, pausing the video and then moving out of the way to make it look like you disappeared.
Back in 2006 when I had it. Mine was able to play mp3 files. I loved how people were very impressed watching it play the file with the lights synchronized. I think the firmware version was V5.50. Also, I saw one with V6.xx (I don't remember the full version) with custom icons.
I had one of these. Super fun, everyone I knew loved it for the lights. I had the Bluetooth adapter for it, too, on top of the message cover. It also came with 5 inserts and the “make your own” insert. The browser was garbage.
How is it I never heard of this model? Wicked cool for 18 years ago...and almost cool now. Add those features to a current phone...interesting. lol Enjoying the Tech Throwback channel!
hey JR thanks for shouting this channel out on your main in your last video! love your car content and am also really into retro tech stuff so this is great. keep up the great vids :-)
You forgot the best part of this phone, there was another backplate that had LEDS in it where you type out messages and wave the phone back and forth in the air to display it.
I had the Nokia 3220 in black which I guess was the European version and I loved it. I was 14 years old when I had this phone, and I remember creating my own designs for the back XpressCover thing. I also remember playing a lot of games on it too such as a 2D version Splinter Cell. Of course, I chose this phone for the lights.
I was an early digital photo adopter also. I had a Ricoh RDC-300 that took those vga 640x480 grainy mosaic pictures. When this stuff hit phones it was a game changer.
That was a great phone. The light show was cool, like once, maybe twice. I can imagine how cringeworthy this would have been if I was standing next to a stranger in an elevator with one of these. A nice look at a very brief time when GSM was finally coming into it's own in the US.
I didn't get to own one of these, but I was able to borrow one from friends, and aside from playing games, I was using it mostly to play sounds and amaze myself with those lights lol
My first used Digital camera I probably picked up in the early 90s was vga resolution maximum and had the memory built in, no memory card. It was so cool back then but such a limited POS now. I later found the next version that included a memory card and 800x600 resolution. I have a Canon T3 DSLR now that still works great now and a bunch of lenses for it and have several Canon film SLR cameras. My phone now has the same resolution my T3 does and can record 4khdr video in stereo.
Woah, I never have seen this phone. My first phone was nokia was a 5110.. I remember having it on the dash of my car with the windows down, took a hard turn, and it went flying out the window. Stopped. Grabbed it off the street and it worked just fine, just a little dinged.
Excellent video. I very much enjoyed the in-depth review and how this model surprisingly had a special NFC cover! I doubt the NFC cover was popular or utilized much other than as a gimmick (NFC payments were not utilized in N.A. yet) but still groundbreaking for 2004.
The 3220 never supported tap to pay or NFC payment features. Most of them only supported reading of NFC tags. However, there we places that allowed you to use NFC for things like transit passes or badge access. The phone + NFC cover could read the NFC from the transit pass or card and store it for use with a special app. Sadly, in North America, I don't think NFC was used for anything besides simply reading tags back then.
I had that phone… I wish I still had all my old phones. I had many many many T-Mobile phones. Abused the upgrade program. Every time a new phone came out I traded in my and replaced it. Haha
I think some people use those phones to take pics for Marketplace. Thankfully does not take forever anymore to type and send a text. I have been using mobile phones since they were pay by the minute. I am not sure what phone I was using at that time. I still have some of my old Nokias though.
I miss phones like this. I wish you could do a video showing the im screen. Didn’t it have aol instant messenger on this one. I use to love having aim in my pocket to message friends at school who had it too or stayed home playing hookie lol.
Hello @datadrivendev Can you please elaborate how you did that? What was the special cable you used to transfer files to the PC? Looking forward to a reply! Thank you!
Used to have this phone when I was a kid, I had a photo of Stacy Keibler on the back. I just bought one on eBay for £10, looks brand new. Gonna downgrade and only use my smartphone during the weekend.
Nokia's most beautiful phone ❤

Yes I remember being able to set up my own ringtone with my mp3 files.

Hello @datadrivendev Can you please elaborate how you did that? What was the special cable you used to transfer files to the PC? Looking forward to a reply! Thank you!

Yo Dawg we heard you like RGB?
More like to dawg you like RG. Because the B Leds were still pretty expensive and Sony had the patent.
So we put RGB inside your RGB so you can RGB while you RGB! 🚥

The vibration is super loud
Yeah no wonder, it's a heavy, solid phone with a vibration strong enough to make it move across the table.
