  • It's time to start thinking about the F750 Dump Truck again and I'm not sure what I should do for a paint job. Before I can do any of that though, I need to get it out of my shop.
    I took a break from the dump truck to show you our new
    "Solar Powered Robotic Pond Skimmer".

    I used to work in bodyshop at Fords Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville. We used glue on over lapping seams and spot welds to hold them together until paint plant can cure the glue in their 350° ovens. If the welds were bad from the robots, we just pop riveted the seam together until the glue was cured! Luv ya's from Kentucky!!!!!

    Neil, some tips for the Betta.
    1. It doesn’t like any turbulence in the water. When it’s windy and shakes it gets confused and swims in circles or constantly goes in reverse which causes it to spit out the debris that’s in the basket.
    3. It has extendable feet that might help it not run up shore.
    3.The remote is useless. There a lag in the signal.
    4. Keep the sonar eyes clean or it will swim in circles.
    Other than that it’s a great little robot. You spend hours waiting watching it and hoping it picks up the ONE large leaf that it passes by inches over and over.

    There will probably be a lot of criticism against using epoxy for this kind of repair by the traditionalist, but it is what is used widely in aerospace and car manufacture. Your only problem might be your application. You need to key and degrease the surface you are bonding to, and the surface should be stripped of paint or primer, because your bond strength will now only be as good as your paint to metal adhesion.

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  19 дней назад +19

      Ah that makes perfect sense. Well shoot. I guess we'll see how long it takes to come loose. I can still weld some spots around the outside I guess. Maybe I'll just keep a few suitcase weights in there to hold it down 😂
      Or maybe some self tappers to tie it together!

    • @bigchuckyinkentucky6267
      @bigchuckyinkentucky6267 19 дней назад +3

      We used it extensively in the manufacturing plant I worked in. While it might not bond the metal as well as a good weld, it sure stuck it better than one of my welds.

    • @ErictheAmateur
      @ErictheAmateur 19 дней назад +8

      you could always drill small 1/8 to 1/4 inch holes through both panels, then weld up the holes. The penetration will act like rivets bonds. Between the epoxy and the spot welds, your floor would be perfectly strong bonded. If you were closer to north Georgia, I’d love to have welded that in for you lol.

    • @FJB2020
      @FJB2020 19 дней назад +3

      It works great IF you prep the surface.. You can't leave the panels shiny and factory finished.. You need to scuff it with a Maroon scuff pad before you use the panel bond.. Also we have been using that stuff for over 20 years at Collision centers.

    • @chadshumaker2789
      @chadshumaker2789 19 дней назад +3

      If you are going to use panel bond DO NOT WELD IT. If you do the panel bond won't hold there. Pick one or the other and go with it.

    The skimmer was designed to turn when it hits a vertical wall. Maybe if you devise a way to extend the "bump" sensors down a couple inches, it will turn before it gets stuck on the pond edges. And if the manufacturer wants to capitalize on the concept, they can license it from us! ;)

    That white used on a lot of the older Fords was Wimbledon white. The stripes on the Bronco and trucks I think was called the “Free Wheeling” edition. That dump truck would look great while and be much more practical.

    You probably haven't gotten a lot of comments for this but I would suggest thinking about JD construction yellow for the cab and gray for the bed. The last couple paint jobs you've done on your channel have been these colors and they already feel like your branding to me. That way you can keep the logo colors we're all used to! And it would match your 318 and skid steer great!

    I may be in the minority here but I say KEEP IT BLACK! You've been thinking about the fleet of black rigs with retro theme and if you don't paint it black you'll never know. The reality is while it is tough to keep black vehicles clean, you're not daily driving these trucks. I suggest looking on marketplace for a couple of old RV carports to park your rigs under to keep them out of the sun and elements and will help to keep your rigs as clean (and shiny) far longer tan being in the open.

    Thanks for the video Neil ! I have a friend who used epoxy (JB Weld) to patch an oil leak from a cracked block in the engine of his transfer dump truck. He didn’t think it would work but the cost of fixing (or replacing) the 3408 Cat diesel exceeded the value of the truck. Three years later his excavating company was still using the truck every week. He eventually sold the truck with full disclosure about the epoxy engine patch.
    I’d paint the trucks white because I’m practical and don’t care much about looking cool. 😆

    Neil, you know by now that the panel bond is to be used for "metal to metal" bonding. May I suggest you seam seal all the edges top and bottom with a proper seam seal product (not caulking) to keep moisture and debris out of the bonded areas which will work on degrading the paint you left behind which is only as strong as paint. It will be OK for quite a while if you don't, but if you keep this rig, you'll wish you did. Keep up your drive mate, it's infectious. Cheers 🇨🇦

    👍 Nice job with the epoxy, had no idea, I'll be using that for sure, thanks. Just looked that skimmer up, maybe you can fashion something out of PVC pipe with your heat gun to re-position those radar sensors further out in front and angled down a bit with protective "bumpers" to suit your gravel bank situation, you've got the skills. I see they have a newer model that has adjustable legs underneath to avoid getting stuck on stairs, maybe a 2" looped back plastic/split PVC strip on either side underneath a few inches down acting as under water bumpers may help or cure as well. It's a pretty cool thing, don't give up on it.

    As for striping, growing up, dad had a dump truck business, his two trucks were black with red stripes so my one truck took that theme. However with the way my RUclips Channel and Farm business is going, I’m leaning more towards a gold on black

    ✨🇨🇦✨. For sure black is probably the nicest choice for a truck 🛻. With the 80s stripes it will look incredible. But it will also be incredibly hard to keep it clean and shiny ✨. So for me it’s an absolute no choice. Got friends who got black sports cars and 10 minutes after they finished to shine it the wind blew up and dusted in seconds all the hard work they put on it. So………. The cream, beige colour with the orange/brown stripes is a must choice too. From Montreal Canada 🇨🇦. 👋🏼🇨🇦🌸✨

    For car welding, you don't draw beads, you spot weld it. Like, you drill holes into the top sheed and then spot it over and over, 1 second bursts only into the drilled holes.
    The main frame is a difference of course, but for the shell, you spot weld.

    I really like the off white bronco you shared. I think that's the best balance of the style you want while keeping the trucks looking clean.

    Paint the F-750 black, it's a very classy look. My dad painted his LTL 9000 black to match his fleet at the time and it looked great!

    I guess you're really lucky because I come back every Sunday to watch your videos. Being a 64 year old woman who loves trucks and "manly" type labor, that I wish I could physically do, you're channel satisfies my wishes. Say hi to the girls.

    Brown surely? It's the ultimate vintage colour, it won't show the muck as much and goes swimmingly with the colours in the stripes!

    Definitely go with the off white. But change the livery colors to your current DDE color scheme and logo with all black trim and accents 👌

    I’ve been watching your content for a while now. Got hooked on the pond project, and been watching your older content now too. I plan on watching everyone one of your videos. So, thank you for all the great content.
    This is my first time commenting. In my opinion, if you want black do black. If you are worried about it showing all the dirt, don’t. It’s a dump truck. A clean dump truck is an unused dump truck. But…..I understand the OCD. I suffer from that too. Solution: build a simple “car wash”. With some pvc pipes, well placed spray nozzles, and a water source to rinse off your equipment (not just your dump truck, all of your equipment will benefit). It won’t help with the paint getting hot, but that’s what oven mitts are for! lol. Hope this helps.

    Hey Neil - why not Safety Blue on the cab, and Safety Orange on the dump box? Then it could match your wood splitter! It would look pretty sharp! 🙂 Seriously though, take a look at a complimentary color chart before trying to get two colors to match - it has certainly helped me in the past. It may give you an idea on the color of pinstripe or similar.

    Hey. Here to comment on the paint scheme. Look up a 1980 scorpion sidewinder. I have one of the snowmobiles. It's a metallic gray with the same decal coloring. You said local trucks use grey but I think this type of color with the same scheme would still differ enough. Just an idea for you. Congrats on getting some work done to her!

    I've had black vehicles for three decades because they look great. We moved to a home on a gravel road about 5 years ago. That changed my color choice because black is an absolute dust magnifier. I switched to silver on my latest truck and couldn't be happier with my choice. It looks clean even with a layer of dust. I didn't want to go with white because it screams fleet truck. Silver is the way to go when you live in the country.

    Just like you, I'm a fan of the off-white Bronco you mentioned. 16:32 It's a really nice looking vintage color choice. I think your trucks would stand out and everyone would know that's a Dig-Drive-DIY truck. No matter where you would go, everyone would see that design, wave and yell, "Hey Neil!" ....And if I'm lucky, I'll see you on the road sometime!

    Black would look great when it's clean and would drive you crazy when's it's dirty. I really think the off white with the retro stripe incorporating black with the orginal color ideas is the perfect comprise of practical and your dream. Still love seeing that 200s in the background in your videos!

    To add my vote to some of the others, I like the idea of white for your F-750. As for the stripes, you said you wanted to incorporate your DDD logo and I thought I read a comment that suggested your stripes be your logo colors of yellow, green and white. To make the white stand out, maybe you could have the colors in a field of black, like your RUclips logo.

    Hey Neil. If money wasn't a question, I would do a paint fade! Dark Gunmetal gray on the bottom fading upward to a medium to light silver. My second pick and a bit cheaper would be Gunmetal gray with Metallic flake would be sharp looking.
