My Great grandfather was a tin miner, he went to USA to mine Iron at the turn of the 20C, came back and bought land. Cornish Proud here.

These lads aren't just sing about their county , they are singing about every county on England that had a proud industrial heritage whether it be the north or south of England . Being from the the North East of England I can relate to a lot they are singing about especially respecting your town or cities history . Take time to listen to the lyrics . Everyone in England can relate can relate to this whichever county they are from 👊

They are actually singing about how the English has ruined there Celtic nation of Cornwall by unlawfully trying to control the mines , it’s pretty much a peaceful way of saying f..k off English

    Definition of a mine?
Hole in the ground with a Cornishman in it. Steve Knightley obviously knew this one.
Show Of Hands are brilliant, a wonderful mix of traditional folk idiom and social commentary.

My ancestors were Cornish people who came to South Australia to mine copper. Cornish ppl build many churches and opened the country up for others to follow. They were happy here but it was very hard at first :) Great song!

Shows of Hands are amazing. I saw them in Winchester, Hampshire. Steve even tweeked his song "Poppy Day" to be down the M3 corridor, rather than the M4. It gave it the local touch that the majority of songs are lacking these days.

The thing is I am from west penwith where i heard cornish being spoken on a daily basis but feel that i am a nationalist , i support England but am very aware of my distinct heritage to which I have always been made to be ashamed of in school and in my later life. We should be all proud of Britain and proud to be British something that has been lost!

If you were listening properly then you would know that he was talking about 'Launceston' rather than 'Lanson'. If you truly care about the fate of Cornwall you should be pleased by the fact that these two fantastic musicians are putting your plight on the map.

Phil was born in Exminster near Exeter; Steve is originally from Eastleigh nr Southampton. Steve went to school in Exmouth; Phil across the Exe Estuary in Teignmouth. Both now live in Topsham nr Exeter.
Show Of Hands don't just write about living in Devon; and Devon life; but the South West as a whole.

Way back in the mists of time, Cornwall was separated from England by the Tamar, not only that but there was a thick Forest teeming with bears, wolves and wild pigs. Cornwall was isolated. The Cornish were independent, strong and resourceful. They were trading with other countries before most of England. In fact smuggling became a trade for at least 300 years. The fisherman would wait for the pilchards to run, they were not the only ones, French and Spanish fisherman were waiting too. Thats how the trade came about. The Cornish respected those who respected them. Cornwall is also one the 5 countries of the Celts . Back to today, Cornwall has it's own language. Cornwall's income during the spring and summer months generates a large revenue, some say enough to sustain Independence. The Cornish have mined for generations, and when the tin ran out, they went out into the world bringing their knowledge with them. I am Cornish, and I'm very proud of my county. I am related to many in St Agnes and Perranporth. If those that know think Cornwall should be Independent, they have my vote.

its about cornish life and what has happend there. im from a mining family in derbyshire and feal the same though. town after town dead or failing the industries are gone to india and other countrys where people are being paid peanuts. this song sums up lots of problems systemic to the whole of england.

    @DarkeningStorms your point being?
"Wales" just means "foreigners". The German for "Italian" is "welsch", which just means "foreigners".
"Britain" just means "land of the Bretons". "Brittany" means exactly the same.
    So what?

Saw show of hands last week in Dartington Great Hall. Really excellent gig - they tempered their usual style a bit to fit the acoustics of the hall. Much better performance than the one on this video -I've seen them q a few time and they've always sounded better than this. I wonder if there was something wrong wiLove the song though , , ,

Its the south-WEST. all about CORNWALL. not the south east. and i don't think the sentiments do work for anywhere else because people elsewhere wouldn't understand what the lyrics are about and mean.

A romanticised language, now that is very cocky indeed, that's the same point made time and time again. Look at the place names of Wales, Cornwall and Brittany.
History is only written by the winners!!

Looks like some people have forgotten the meaning of the name "Cornwall."
When literally translated, it means "Horn shaped peninsula of foreigners."
The Saxons got it.... So they must be cavemen.

@15niall "grow up" ...surely you need to grow up if you are being so condescending...they arent after independence...just want their very ancient and effective stannary parliament....you may do well to do some actual research on cornish history.
