It's time to talk about arguably the most beloved Zelda game: Wind Waker. I've heard nothing but love be expressed about this game (aside from its slow intro) and had to give it a shake for myself to see what it was all about!

To me, it is the best. Amazing how at first it was hated for its art style. Now I think many would say it’s top 5, maybe top 3 for most people.

My favorite Zelda by a long shot. What's funny is when it was announced I hated it, thought the art style was awful. Mom preordered it for me because it was a Zelda GameCube game anyway and got me the guide and the OoT disc for my birthday.
Damn I'm glad she did. Still just one of the best adventure game's I've ever played.

    • @PikaLink91
      @PikaLink91 Год назад +4

I never hated it for its artstyle, I just find it boring and that it doesn't explore its full potential. I mean first off, from a lore perspective I get the whole sailing because Hyrule is flooded gimmick... but sailing quickly gets boring. When you ride around on Epona in fx Twilight Princess you have nature to look at. In Wind Waker... an island may pop up in the horizon every once in a while, and if you wanna change direction you gotta whip out the titular Wind Waker (I know they changed that in the HD port but I'm going off of the game as originally intended).
It also feels short. Four dungeons including the big one that I don't remember the name of. And then afterwards when you have to treasure hunt for the Triforce I was completely flabergasted when I first played, because I was like "You are telling me... that the hunt for the almighty legendary TRIFORCE... is religated.... to a fking fishing minigame??? Why not have dungeons for that?!?" I mean in the first Zelda you went to 8 dungeons in order to collect the 8 pieces of the Triforce of Wisom, so it would have been a GENIOUS callback to that game to have you go to 8 additional dungeons (after the first 4) to collect the Triforce.
Also, thoughout the game you hear so much about "the world below" making you curious to actually GO there... and you do... to Hyrule Castle. How cool would it have been, similiar to A Link to the Past's light world and dark world, to first explore the sea in Wind Waker, and then halfway through gain the ability to explore the seafloor? So then you would have the "surface world" and the "seafloor world".
I am furiously tapping away at my keyboard right now with all of the missed potential this game has, and it infuriates me that Nintendo didn't do all this. One might then argue that the game would be borrowing too much from older titles, but I genuinely don't think it would. On the contrary, the game would be taking elements FROM the older titles, to create its own unique adventure.
But no, we didn't get that. We got boring sailing -> go to four dungeons -> go to Hyrule Castle -> fish for pieces of the Triforce -> go back to the castle and fight Ganondorf....... yay?
...and yes, I ended up writing an essay again. I can't help it. I'm not a novelist for nothing.

It's probably because of the bright atmosphere of outset Island and the fact that I was enthralled by the art style when I was a child but I've never felt like the opening to wind waker is that slow. I really enjoyed taking my time talking with the NPCs doing little tasks and just exploring the island (although I did hate the Forsaken fortress because losing your sword makes you entirely helpless and I was bad at the stealth section.) The stinger effect that plays when a moblin notices you jump-scared me as a kid and spiked my anxiety lol. Probably an unpopular opinion but I find Twilight Princess's opening much more slow on repeat playthroughs than I ever did with wind waker but that's probably partly because I didn't play that one until I was older so I don't have the nostalgia glasses to push me forward. I just feel like the little quests that you need to do in Ordon village right at the beginning are kind of a time waster. Love both games once I get past the opening couple of hours though

Was one them fans that saw was hyped when they showed that footage of ganon transforming and link ready to battle as a proof of concept of GameCubes power initially, and hated on wind waker soon cause that was what they unveiled later. Like why show that graphical dark edges intense take of Zelda and that the GameCube could do it. Then backtrack to this artstyle, show him sailing a boat, chasing pigs, talking to a snot running kid….. I passed on wind waker massively cause that was a wicked tease. But thankfully they did deliver on twilight princess later. And I still went back to wind waker much later on albeit but to give it a fair shake. And I do hold it now as one my fav Zelda’s. Gameplay was tight and responsive, sense of exploration was literally on the horizon everywhere, dungeons still retained the iconic Zelda treatment we know and love, and yea artwork put me off initially but as everyone unanimously agrees these agrees these days, it’s holds and looks great to this day….. what’s funny is twilight princess is lower on my list even though I more anticipated it. Idk why find myself dropping twilight princess more everytime I try playing it. Maybe beaten it twice all my years and it’s my least played next to breath of the wild.

Those are a little different, because your movement isn't inhibited to the same degree. You can still run and jump, you don't need to sneak through those levels without Fludd or Cappy, you can still do running triple jumps. In Forsaken Fortress your stuff is taken away AND your freedom of movement. Even if you want to try to speedrun past all of the enemies without your gear, the game forces a cutscene where you're spotted, grabbed, and thrown back into a cell.

It was a bit of a shocker since they had showed off a tech demo for Gamecube with Link looking more like he does in Twilight Princess so we thought we were getting something like that instead of the cel shaded style of Wind Waker... I don't get why you think it's slow, within the first ten minutes of gameplay the plot begins, that's quick compared to a lot of games

Ah… the first Zelda game I’ve ever played. I didn’t even know what it was when I started, thought it was just a cool pirate game (when I was 6). Then Link went below the waves and I became obsessed with discovering what this land was, knowing full well it’d be eventually, utterly destroyed

I’ll never forget when I first played Wind Waker as a teen, back then, the moment after the tower of the gods, I don’t want to spoil anything unless he hasn’t gotten there yet, but y’all know what that moment is. To this day one of the coolest moments I’ve experienced in my life time playing the Zelda games. I would spending so much time standing and looking out into the distance of that area wishing I could explore the entirety of it. 🥰🥰

I would want a remake more than a port of the wii u hd version. Specifically so that they can add in the content that was supposedly cut from the original.

I forget which game had it, might have been the zelda compilation on the GameCube, but there was a 2 hour demo for Wind Waker I used to play all the time, and it was the fortress section. The barrels in that little room used to piss me off so much, it made me never wanna play it. I had never beaten a Zelda at that point so for YEARS I never played Wind Waker. Turned out to be one of my favorites, but really only because of the ending

I love Wind Waker! The art direction was an interesting turn and also how there were pirates and etc. The Ganondorf in WW is my favorite in design, personality, etc. I also really enjoyed being able to use a pear to take control of things like a seagull cause why not. 😆

If you like darker, edgier games more I don't mind pointing out that Wind Waker may surprise you at points in the story. That being said Wind Waker is one of my absolute favorite games in the series. Though I'd be lying if I said I could make my own tier list. Despite loving Zelda for like 25-26 years making that list today is hard. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses. And a lot of them are heavily tied to nostalgia for me. As a kid OoT was more or less automatically #1, but today I'm less certain of that despite my adoration for it.
As a side note, though you may already know this, you don't quite get full freedom until after the second dungeon. You can explore most things on the right side of the map, but the left has to wait if I remember right. Which works out since there isn't a lot you can do on the various islands until you have the items you get up to that point.

I got this game for my bday in 2005, coincidently the gane also starts as Link's bday. I only played up to forsaken fortress, I'm not good at stealth. I asked one of my friends to play the rest while I helped w/the tingle tuner

Wind Waker is a game that aged very well. Many didn't like it at first due to the change in the art direction from the previous masterpieces that were Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, but still grew fond of it after playing it. I say this because I also remember really loving playing through it after initially finding it off-putting from enjoying the darker tones of the previous games.

Literally playing this now for my first time as I watched this video (my excuse is that I skipped Nintendo after the N64 until I got a Switch and wanted all Nintendo everything, so now I'm playing catch up). It's a very fun game, I'm about half way through or close to that point. Not going to call it a favorite yet though...I don't think there's going be a game that will top OoT for me. OoT was something I didn't even play until years later on an N64 Emulator (in like 2009/2010), and even then I absolutely fell in love with it...that game is truly special.
