Susan Jaffe is something unique. Especially because she was one of the taller girls to become a ballerina. She has described herself as "I had legs up to my ears and big feet". It's true. Her legs seemed to have no end. She... is special. Really. Baryshnikov himself asked this dear girl herself to replace none other than Gelsey Kirkland when her drug problem flared up and made her unreliable. And Vladmir... now he doesn't get the credit the dear man deserves. Honestly, he is one of the best danseurs in the world right now. He is the Nureyev of his time. He looks and moves just like him. But man, I even dare to say he's even better than good ol' Rudolph. He actually surpasses one Rudolph Nureyev. They make such beautiful music here together. For that, we should be eternally grateful. To them, to American Ballet Theatre... And to Kabaiivansko2... thanks for sharing the magic... Danke, and as they say in ballet, Merde...
Wow, quite unique.. she really is acting a part, not just dancing. I've seen an interview where she describes how a good part of her career was spent on really perfecting her ability to get into the deepest depth of her characters, a real painstaking search for the true 'art' in ballet. It really shows. Perfect technique of course helps, but there is something more layered on top of it that really 'makes the show'. Too bad 'they don't make them this way anymore'
Dancers today are in many ways very superficial and self absorbed (which has it's place). Their identities seem to hinges on the pyrotechnics. And once the tricks are done and they receive the applause, we're more often, left with a pseudo good feeling, overlaid with a sense of what might have been. This performance is so nuanced, that we can almost feel the breeze from the flutter of her wings. Bravo!.
It's hard to believe that you're saying this. You must not have seen alot of ballet dancers. From every country there are stupendous dancers with technique and soulful artistry to the rafters. Natalia Osipova and every great russian ballerina you could name. Zakarova. Lucia Lacarra. The list is absolutely endless. Watch more ballet!
@@brendaannedufaur6244 I've seen plenty from today. They're all kind of ... the same. It's all about how far past the ear you can put up the leg. Very cookie cutter, no real individuality. They often look like from a doll factory, with exaggerated physical features and mannerisms of motion. Some exceptions with true personality and unique artistic individuality do exist, but rare.
@@ahayes9945 Yes, very interesting observation. It's like they're not really serving art, but some standard or 'school' for their personal gain. Of course they all need some of that, but it should not show in the art, and these days it does. It's probably in the way that they are prepared and raised.
@@ahayes9945 Another thing that comes through in her dancing is an inner joy. There's something so up beat and light, you get totally caught up in watching. Because she is not so visibly self-absorbed, the viewer can really get absorbed in what she's doing.

I agree! It's why I would beat my shoes with a mallet or crush them in a doorway to keep them pliable and silent. Everyone thought I was nuts, but we all have our mad techniques. My beat up knees now tell the story.
yes, i would agree.. that is the absolute only drawback here, but it could have something to do with it being a video, and it doesn't really take away from what she is doing, the true artistry of her style.
Nah il have to disagree Sylvie Guillem is in a class of her own❤ Susan Jaffee is exquisite though and her acting n ability to competely embrace the char😊acter is something very rare🎉Bravi
Malakhov never ever was weird!I saw him in Vienna and in Berlin. He was a dancer with great technique and sensitivity always. May be sometimes he was bored in dancing the same princes... Jaffe is not perfect in tech. here but she realy got body and personality on stage! Nowadays something rare.
Sure would like to know what company this is. Love these dancers, and it's mostly excellent, though I was disappointed to not have the grieving Odette (or in some productions, multiple white swans), at that particular music. Also didn't care for how the moment of the awful revelation is staged; Siegfried didn't actually swear his love here, and I also felt a bit cheated of Odile's joyful scorn at him--she just disappeared behind Rothbart's cape. Also, as others have noted, the music for the two solos is unusual (though I know others have also mixed and matched various pieces of music for those). But Jaffe and Malakhov have been, and will always be two of my favorites.
Susan Jaffe danced primarily with ABT. The choreography looks like it's Peter Martins as he did a lot of one handed partnering so either ABT used his choreography or Jaffe is guesting with the NYC Ballet. Those are my best guesses.
Then why are you here watching and wasting your time commenting? Prince is one whom we choose. You chose Igor, go watch him, he is a good dancer but so are many others
Disappointing,,, excellent dancing, no electricity & no Odette!!! (Fluttering helplessly at a window)... there is too much warmth between Odile & the Prince.... & no betrayal by his being encouraged to pledge & swear his love to Odile....

Really good! Beautiful poses, arms, and balance.
I love this black swan, without all the show from some companies
She is an amazing swan! But the clunking of her shoes!!!!!!!! Dives me 🥜!!

Erin S. There are almost always audible footfalls in ballet... true, silence IS golden in this case!
also, she is SO light on her feet that it doesn't detract as much as it might from other dancers

never saw the woman dancing her solo with the music that is usually for the male solo .
pediatrapaola I thought the same thing.
Beautiful, maybe 1998, Swan Lake never loses impact. ❤️🌹
Wow Bravo!
The best black swan, and I've seen most everyone, from Guillem to Makhalina. Possibly better than Zakharova, and equal to Marianela Nunez
Totally agree!! And I"ve seen them all too!!
Really ??? Better than Lopatkina, Plisetskaya, Kaptsova, Simyunova, even Skorik amd Kandaurova? Really ?
Gillian Murphy, Ángel Corella, the best

Jaffe's pointe shoes are SO clunking and loud!
May be the floor?
Her technique is sublime.
Always was one of my favorites, exquisite technique and acting. But isn’t it a different choreography and music in one of her solos?
Different choreographer
Perfection.
Susan Jaffe.

Awesome!!!
WOW!😍
she looks great. just great! he's weird

Totally agree with your remarks about the choreography and staging.
This is John Cranko's choreography at Stuttgart Ballet!!
I think Susan Jaffe is guesting with English National Ballet.
She is marvelous.
There is only on Prince in Swan Lake and this is Igor Zelensky in Kirov`s production;nobody touches his princely height!!!

Long Zhang really???? Hmmmm strange version. Who’s version?
It's John Cranko's Swan Lake at Stuttgart ballet.
Isn't she dancing the wrong variation???
Do not like the sounds of her ballet shoes..distract too much. Also her first variation was not good
