The Taiwanese civilians training for a Chinese invasion

- Kuo Chiu, known as KC to his friends, teaches urban design at Tunghai University in Taiwan. He’s also one of many of the country's citizens who practises rifle skills in his spare time, in case of a Chinese invasion.
The population of Taiwan has long grown familiar with Beijing’s pledge to one day ‘unify’ what it claims is a breakaway province. But recently, there has been a significant increase in aggressive and intimidatory acts.
Taiwan’s 160,000 active military personnel are vastly outnumbered by China’s 2 million-member armed forces, leading many civilians to turn to voluntary medical and combat training to protect themselves.
The Guardian's video team spent time with KC to see how he is preparing.

To Taiwan from Myanmar: If there is a will, there is a way. To the Taiwanese people training for self defense, please remember Bruce Lee's philosophy: “Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.
Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

Self reliance is very empowering. Every person should maintain first aid training skills. Understanding how to defend yourself and your community is a life skill. Basic emergency preparedness for natural or man made disasters gives comfort over uncertainty.
Taiwan is surrounded by water on all sides, unlike Ukraine. They can take advantage of it
How? China can block the ports and block any resupply.
Its not just that though. Thanks to the seasonal weather, an invasion is only possible during certain times of the year. Also there are only a few viable locations for a invading force to land in Taiwan - all of these sites are monitored. Plus the sheer scale of the force required to successfully invade Taiwan means that the Taiwanese and US governments would be aware of the invasion months in advance.

Taiwan should really look into starting regional militias or designated area militia from locals. That would really provide the government with another line of defense. The government should also look into allowing these militias or even better state controlled gun purchases. It will be infinitly more difficult for the CCP to control a armed population. Many will be against such changes but the situation calls for drastic measures. One or two years of service is not enough and not allowing an armed population is a huge mistake.
There is no defense against modern warfare. No matter how many American weapons they buy. It will be fought remotely if war breaks out. Which I highly doubt it. Hypersonic, AI, electronic, laser, swamp drones and UAVs, stealth bombers etc. Don't have to cross the Taiwan straits at all.

Private gun ownership would be the gateway for Chinese saboteurs to arm themselves and wreak havoc on their back lines in the event of a war, against a modern military like China a militia stands literally no chance, it’s better to have system of reservists than militias since militias are well outdated in the modern day

When bullets fly towards you, its very different
You can see the difference compared to China's army week at university. Most of the kids there are joking around and playing games.
Facing the threat from the PRC, Taiwan must enhance the training of reserve military personnel. Despite Taiwan's small size, it possesses a significant military force. By effectively training two million reserve soldiers, Taiwan could deploy a force of up to 2.3 million, comparable to the military strength of the PRC.
Observing the PRC's handling of conflicts with neighboring countries, such as using water cannons and pushing, it is evident that the PRC lacks the courage to engage in genuine military confrontations with major powers. If the United States clearly expresses its commitment to providing military support to Taiwan, it is unlikely that the PRC would risk a direct conflict with the U.S. military by initiating a war against Taiwan.
Taiwan dont have mandatory reservist callback every year for training and missions?? Taiwan conscription is now very lax only a few months. Go back to the old conscription methods like 20 years or more ago, 3 years conscription. You need that to train an efficient army.

It began when China was invaded by Japan. Then many groups fought to get China's independence back, including the People's liberation army, which eventually not only took back independence, but also forced the old government of China to flea to Taiwan. The frontline combat personnel of the Taiwanese Army use the T91 rifle, while the second line uses the T65K2. However, many units are currently using the T65K2, which is poorly maintained. At this stage, the Taiwanese Army lacks shooting training, hand-to-hand combat training, and physical training.
Reasons for the lack of shooting training: There are too few shooting ranges, a lack of systematic approach to shooting training, and a mindset among the generals that is stuck in World War II. For example, in the eastern military region, there is only one shooting range, and each soldier, during their limited military service, averages only 10-20 bullets fired. This is far from sufficient for training, as even the basic training of soldiers in many countries is superior to that of the Taiwanese Army.
Reasons for the lack of hand-to-hand combat training: The people of Taiwan do not place high importance on military training. Every family views the physical injuries resulting from military training as a threat. For instance, the "Hung Chung-chiu case" led to the complete abolition of military law due to a soldier's accidental death. This also caused the military police to lose their function and the military system to become lax, using outdated bayonet techniques that are of no practical value. The Taiwanese Army’s bayonet technique completely neglects the control of the firearm trigger, which is a mistake. Real hand-to-hand combat training should take reference from France, the USA, and Israel.
Unfair conscription system: Before 2005, male soldiers only had 4 months of military service, which is insufficient to train competent infantry (Taiwan should learn from South Korea).
Please note, young women in Taiwan do not wish to undergo military training, as they prefer to enjoy privileges superior to men in this aspect. Some women express willingness to participate in war, but unfortunately, they never undergo training and only make empty verbal commitments.
Distorted public consciousness: The citizens of Taiwan, when interviewed on the streets, express their willingness to join the military in case of a Chinese invasion. However, they do not consider that soldiers need training to be effective. In the 21st century, a war is not won by sheer numbers. Moreover, Taiwan faces China, with its 1.4 billion population, compared to Taiwan's 23 million.
Conclusion: Overall, if China invades Taiwan, Taiwan will have no capacity to resist. Relying on people outside the military system for ad hoc training cannot protect the country. The current Democratic Progressive Party government does not seem to have the intention to improve this situation. Perhaps the Republic of China Taiwan will become a part of history in the future.
Additional Note: The knowledge of Taiwanese Army soldiers regarding firearm usage rules is limited, indicating severely outdated training. This is also why civilians need to rely on gas guns for training and undertake first aid training, as these are not provided by the military.
One of the main reason is most Taiwanese people are more interested in pursuing career in high tech industries, medical and financial sector. Very often they would prefer to migrate to Singapore or Malaysia if conflict resumes.

well. its not the 40s anymore, but the winter war shows a valuable lesson on how an outnumbered and outgunned country can withstand agression from a superior neighbour. and ukraine shows, that it still works. a lot of military experts in the west said it would be over in under 2 weeks. eastern experts said even less. Yet, a strong fighting spirit in a wide portion of the pouplation, civilian preparedness and support from loyal allies made it possible to fight for almost 2 years now, with the outcome still not being decided.
but in both cases, that required one thing. an armed population. dont get me wrong, i honestly thing, when it comes to handling, movement and communication, small unit tactics, etc. airsoft is a much better training aid than people give it credit for. but individual marksmanship is a different story. an airsoft gun can teach you how to use your sights and for a defensive handgun shooting at 10-15 yards that may be sufficient, but you just cant simulate, what its like to engage a target at rifle distances of over 100 meters. i understand why taiwan doesnt want looser gun laws, their violent crime statistics are a success story, but there are countries thta have found effective ways to have a strong civil defense and maintain high internal safety standards, the best examples arguably being finland and switzerland. and if they are not willing to allow civilian firearms ownership, they should atleast give the option for commercial ranges, so people can add atleast some real triggertime to their training with airsoft guns. that being said, in that case the government needs to stockpile enough weapons to arm those people if war comes.
Think about how many dudes with experience are in normal society now ready to stop anything going on in the community. It is such a cool thing to see in a country. In Canada if we built a civilian trained group we would be labelled as a terrorist militia because our govt only sees threats to their power, not citizens preparing.

Invading Taiwan will likely happen via amphibious and airborne operation therefore it would be better for Taiwan to strategically focus on platforms that create high percentage of survivability, deterrence, and ability to repel. In other words, Taiwan can rely on standard submarines, midget submarines, naval mines, ground-based air defense platforms, land-based anti-ship missiles, drones, man-portable weapons, and MLRS, and Truck Mounted Rocket Assisted Mine laying systems.
Simply the overall goal is to repel the enemy at the sea/beach and don't let the enemy secure the Beachhead or the landing point.

The objective truth is PRC never ruled Taiwan and ROC still exist. Another one is Taiwan or ROC is NOT part of PRC, the sole representative of China in UN.
And I'm pretty sure you'd need a Taiwan or ROC visa to visit Taiwan. Not PRC visa.
Lots of respect for taiwanese people...from India....stay strong and foster your friendship with other countries.
Taiwanese are training for an airsoft match. There, I fixed the title.
This is why Americans prep and prepare as civilians. We the people are the militia. Even if China don't invade always be prepared. Learn medic, train with weapons, prepare your grounds, and have months of food stored. Get out there and train. Murica!
Korea ,Japan and Taiwan are already preparing. Pinas, chill lang. I know that the only dispute we have with China is the West Philippine Sea but dang, we will just watch? I am willing to participate but the government should provide training.
Words are just words. Go join the military then.
Taiwan will always be independent! 🇹🇼👍🇹🇼👏🇹🇼
🙌🏾
Novorosiya will be independent
On which day did Taiwan declare independence? 🤣🤣🤣
Lol not even the Taiwanese leader dare to declare independence
Ryukyu kingdom will be independent.
It's a scam, we have many groups like this, a bunch of people who don't have professional skills running around, taking pictures.
Training to defend your country is like any tool in your tool box, u might rately or never use it but its always better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it 😮
I think strenthening the coastal defense and air defense are superior options than urban warfare.
An armed society is a polite society
notice how they are using airsoft guns, not real guns yank
Yes, said Boeing and LockheedMartin and the gun lobby.
yeah talk these to the killed children in US schools
An armed society is not a poilte society, but an violent one.
nvm your other opinions, but comparing these grassroots enthusiasts to tier one forces is kind of comedic
Trained
Readiness
Preparedness
I wish Philippines have this kind of
Practice.
TAIWAN don't be afraid that's your right to be i free world
Compared to the Chinese military this milita actually looks well trained
If that’s the case, the politics have nothing to worry about, which is it the case. Stop lying to yourself. It’s better to know your enemy rather than daydreaming.
PLA certainly doesn't train by shooting BB guns while walking slowly forward out in the open, this is SWAT trainng, not military.
The difference is also moot, because these days PLA are training with drone backpacks and armed robot dogs, if Taiwan is training for fighting humans they're already obsolete.
Certainly we have a Chinese military expert here. Wonder why the Pentagon has not hired him.
@@vlhc4642 Have you seen how the PLA trains? They’re built like little sticks and run around like headless chickens 🐔 during their exercises. The PLA isn’t ready for combat their soldiers look like they would freeze in combat. On the other hand this Taiwanese milita seems to be well coordinated not running around like fool lol.
@@psycho3v345 I've seen PLA train with robot dogs and UCGVs and supplied by UGVs and drones. I don't know what you've are allowed to see by your regime but oh you have no idea how f*ed Taiwan is.
major battle is won by heavy weapon. if you guys really want to resist, should start training militia operating heavy weaponry, Close Combat Tactics means very little for major battles.
...That every MAN shall be armed..American words, international meaning of/ in the world of freemen and women.
Protect your home! Much love from sweden
you ruined your home, letting waves of taliban into your country, you are defeated from inside
Are Taiwan people Chinese or Americans? Does America own Taiwan?
Guess they would rather be American than Chinese.
Taiwan people hold similar values to American, especially in political freedom and civil rights domain.
they are Chinese who wants Democracy and there's Beijing with authoritarian rule...
Genetically they're more related to Chinese since listen if you studied history you know where the people of Taiwan really came from
@@Marcusdamascus Genetically Chinese and American are all the same. THEY ARE ALL HUMAN.
Nether there Taiwanese.
So Taiwan would be like modern day Stalingrad?
It's OK but where they found Nepalese khukuri? 🇳🇵
Lets be real though. Taiwanese people are about the least intimidating people
Same people ready to disintegrate each other.Rascism at it best☺️
Wait a minute I've seen this one before🤔
an amphibious landing by the enemy forces will be disastrous for the enemy themselves. taiwan is surrounding by water and that is their advantage.
at the same time it can be surrounded by a naval blockade unless the US and ROC Navy can make sure that it doesn't
This is where the right to bear arms comes into play. Citizens need to be prepared to defend themselves and loved ones
Huh. What if Taiwan had their own version of second amendment? I forgot if it was Andrew Yang or Vivek said this.
Bro, war is not a Battlefield Game.
tawain is not even a contry
Incorrect
Taiwan is every bit an independent country NOT ruled by PRC.
It’s not a country 😊
@@nategray4989 come visit Taiwan and see for yourself :)
His view of war is deadly; to his fellow countrymen. Everything he says screams of the naiviety of someone who has not been in the military or been in a war zone. The thought Taiwanese cities would be "hard to conquer" is insanity incarnate. I pray his fellow countrymen in defence positions aren't this silly.
Urban combat is brutal, what u on about?
It is until you run out of ammunition. Ukraine can be easily supplied unlike Taiwan. Being and Islands has its benefits, and disadvantages. Close to 100% of energy in Taiwan is imported, 70% of food.@@sidhantjasrotia7079
Ah yes, you clearly know best
Military service is mandatory in Taiwan, I bet he knows more about war than you do
@@ruins161 Yeah, about that, military service is mandatory in Taiwan, which is why everyone knows their military is a joke and their government had to cut service duration to just 2 month.
CIA have been training the Taiwanese for decades yet they claimed they have no professional help, that's just not true. The U.S. taxpayers paid for the training, now let''s see if it pays off.
There should be more discussion and dialog on how to strive for peace between China and Taiwan. All these news drumming up possible Chinese invasion and Taiwanese citizen military training fail to underscore the terrible tragedy and devastation war can bring to humanity. The people in Taiwan especially its leaders should learn the lessons from Ukraine and Gaza that war should be avoided in all costs.
The ruzzians stated that they will not invade, but they did under the disguise of "special military operation" to "denazify" an independent nation. They went as far as criminalizing mentioning the smo as a war and arrested people who protested against it. PRChina will be the same. Violating sovereign nations territories with their illegal nine dash line bs.
Team. Include female compulsory military training in combat trades or you are not being serious about defending Taiwan against China. Full stop. The ladies are the difference between win or loose.
Ooh boy. It's happening there too.
Why isn't KC using his architecture knowledge to develop underground shelter and defenses. If the Vietnam War, Ukraine War and the recent Israel-Hamas war has shown something interesting, underground and trench defenses are very effective. Therefore, the shovel and spade are just as important as machine guns and medical equipment
