Been there, done it, roller does not work too well with lacquer, unless you apply by roller to a small section, and then smooth it out with a brush in the direction of the grain. Your lacquer/ varnish has to be quite runny to do that, you have to thin it a little bit first for an even coat.
What kind of nitwit watches woodworking video's and dislikes this one in particular and what is it that was objected to? I' ve watched many of Steve's videos and they are easy to follow. I disagree with him when he says that he is not a professional, just a hobbyist. He is to good to be just a hobbyist.
Steve, I've watching this whole series a couple times and am about to do my second cut for the top. I'm looking ahead to be ready.. and am wondering how many coats of shellac you applied before sanding. I want to end up with this super clear glass finish you got! Thanks!
I'm new to wood working and was curious as to why you sand after your coats when using polyurethane or others, is it because the wood absorbs all it can(and each spot varies on how much it can absorb so you just put down a good amount) and then you want to sand away and get rid of all the excess, I suppose after the sealer the wood shouldn't be absorbing much hence what it's there to do. I have a book which is a guide to wood finishing just haven't gotten to the good parts yet (the most useful information yet)
Hi Steve this is fantastic to watch, I was wondering if you would do custom builds and sell them. I would love to do this but as I am not very stable with my arms and hands, it is difficult to do myself. If you would do this, how much would it cost? Thanks Benjamin
i noticed when i paint (walls and stuff like that), that a paint roller makes a much more even layer of paint than a paint brush. Do you think it could work the same with that lacquer finish? using a small roller instead of the brush? If it did, it might save a lot of time with the sanding and smoothing out. Just a theory though. I don't really know much about that stuff.
i have a question can i use oak instead of maple?? will it have a good color or look like black walnut? i live in EL PASO and i have never seen black walnut here
Hey I’m following this guide but everywhere else says it’s necessary to have at least 3-4 coats of shellac. Did you do just one in the video and is there a reason?
I found one site that mentions using multiple layers of shellac will cause cracking after sometime if lacquer is applied. Is that why you only did one coat of shellac?
Keeping your tools well cleaned and cared for is something that gets lost these days, when it is common to throw away and buy new stuff. I am all for getting good tools and spending time on maintenance instead of using and discarding to save a little time.
¿Sabes, no?... ¿Me entiendes?...
A) you could rubberband or tape a brush to a paint stick to apply shellac to inside runners.... or, B) rubber band a piece of cloth/rag on the tip of a long paint stick to apply it LOLLOL
ilove2boogi92... let me give you a tip...if you start a wood shop and you wanna start to buy tools, I recomend you start with good tools, at least Craftsman, well that my poor opinion. I start mine and I spend around $3,000.00 Dlls.
Then you are using cheap/poor quality brushes. You want brushes with different tips on the end of the bristles to hold the fluis better and to spread it easier. Using a good quality brush properly is just like using a paint roller just slower. I'd give you more info but I'm busy at the moment sorry.
This is way far from being a "home proyect" this is completely a higly sophisticated profetional craft work, where you are using extremely expensive materials, tools and machinery that are far from being affordable for most people. As well as the board itself, im a chess player and that board would cost around U$1000 if not more. You should definetly offer your sevices to Magnus Carlssen.
Love the old Steve videos. He seemed like such a down to earth guy.
He still does.
@TheDeltaFlight Yes.

I know a bunch of wood workers that love using Shellac. Its not over looked

to clarify the shellac under poly thing. just make sure you use dewaxed shellac and you shouldnt have any issues
Steve I always use brass wool after initial coat of lacquer It contours really well & only takes a slight pass to get smooth results ,, Just saying !

Are those detergent lids that you're using for your shellac and thinner? That's brilliant.

could you use lacquer thinner to cut lacquer down for a sealer coat
design marvel, I have always seen their videos are wonderful pieces!
Steve you did a perfect chessboard 👍🏻

This is a very important question to me. If you were to have enough laquer, can you dip the chess set into it?
I really think since you have done such i very nice job on the board, i think i would spray paint the lacquer finish for a final coat
0-0 man u make this look professional
I made one like this and sold it for $140, great job
i have a question
can i use oak instead of maple??
will it have a good color or look like black walnut?

were you using Clear lacquer for this?
Nice 👍
