This game is Rhythm game, there's many unit other than Knight in the game, and none of the voice is from AI as each character in the game has Voice Actor behind them who voiced those character and singing the song.

Hi Scott! I'm a huge Ensemble Stars!! fan and love singing videos, so I was pleasantly surprised to see this recommended to me by RUclips! I don't often see vocal coaches review Japanese content and it's great to see that you were willing to give it a go. I'll be subscribing to your channel in hopes that you'll review more that I'm interested in.
I enjoyed watching your observations on a technical level such as details on the larynx placement for each singer and notes on harmony. I was curious on how Izumi's tone was so unique, but I can understand it better now based on your comments. It was also both fun and interesting to watch you genuinely enjoy the music and voices even if you're not familiar with the series.
Let me knock out all of your questions and provide my own thoughts:
1:30 The videos you were watching are music videos created for the unit Knights from the all male idol gacha rhythm game "Ensemble Stars!! Music" well, almost all male. Arashi is the only trans woman and idol who uses she/her pronouns.
The gameplay involves hitting notes based on the song you've selected to play. These music videos can be played in the background as you play.
Songs are released in albums, on a weekly basis, or through special events and celebrations such as anniversaries.
Gacha means there is a mechanic where you are expected to acquire items of interest based on very slim chances of getting them through luck. In "Ensemble Stars!! Music" it means that players use in-game or paid currency to earn or try their luck for cards of their favourite characters to boost their game team strength for higher points or get music video costumes.
You can change who dances in these music videos! Or even better, change who sings what part in some certain songs! This is not often done in these kinds of games as it's a lot of work.
"Ensemble Stars!! Music" is the second mobile game installment of the Japanese multi-media franchise called "Ensemble Stars!"
The series was a spin-off of the now abandoned series "Ensemble Girls!" that featured female idols.
"Ensemble Stars!" is now 9+ years strong and is one of the top franchises targeted towards women in Japan.
4:47 All of the characters in "Ensemble Stars!! Music" have one voice actor assigned to each character and they take care of singing, voice acting, and represent their character during live events or concerts. There are no AI voices in this franchise and it is incredibly rare for Japanese media to use AI voices. But as a side-note, "Ensemble Stars!" is a multi-media franchise and that includes stage plays. There are often different stage actors for the stage plays, but some of the voice actors also perform as stage actors in the stage plays.
9:18 I wish I could tell you about the story and plotlines, but it's a real big mess since it's been going for so long... My brief description would be that "Ensemble Stars!" follows the story of 51 characters spread across 15 units (this is not including the 5 characters newly released this year) that have chosen to become idols in one way or another. It's actually a very convuluted plot with a diverse cast and dark themes. There's an underlying mafia plotline and recently we got a tidbit on baby cloning... I really don't understand what's going on myself. The additional exclamation mark in "Ensemble Stars!! Music" marks the second current year of the story and we're going into the third year as of 2024.
13:53 Many of the songs you watched are event songs. Event songs are typically meant for the lead singer's character development in the story and the music usually takes inspiration on the character's personality or hardships.
Wonderful Happiness is an album song I believe so it's a general Knights song... I think.
Little Romance is Ritsu's event song. Ritsu can be described as laidback and soft-spoken... In voice tone only. He's very snarky.
Coruscate Breeze is Leo's event song. Leo is a carefree, childish, and excitable composer. This is one of my favourite songs, haha!
14:17 Knights is 1 of 15 (well, one unit just got disbanded in the story and one just got introduced this year...) units in this franchise. Each unit has their own theme and motiv and their storylines are all important in "Ensemble Stars!"
Knights is dedicated to being chivalrous and present themselves as knights for their fans that they refer to as "princesses."
15:19 Yes. Tsukasa is the current leader of Knights, and that gives him lead for recent songs. However, the previous leader of Knights was Leo and many of the older Knights songs feature Leo as center because of it. The leadership pass off is story based and is part of Tsukasa's character development.
J-pop idol anime franchises seem to prefer bright, youthful nasal voices for their voice actors. I'd say this is pretty common. These characters range from 16 to 21 years old (with some exceptions) so yeah, of course they'd prefer youthful tones.
I really think you should try checking other units from this franchise as there I think there are some really good singers. Many of the voice actors are incredibly popular in Japan, so there are some big names. Or try checking out their solo songs! Each character (except ones from Alkaloid, Crazy:B, and 4Piece; Alkaloid and Crazy:B members now have 1 solo song each as of 2024) has two solos songs now and they really showcase each character's voices and personalities well. However, if you're thinking of covering more than "Ensemble Stars!" perhaps you should consider other popular Japanese series focusing on music such as:
"Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE!" This is another mobile rhythm gacha game, but it has male and female characters and also features virtual singers (Vocaloid/Piapro) made by Sega. There are 5 units and uh, 20 characters. This series is unique because they cover hit Vocaloid songs and Sega commissions Vocaloid producers to make original songs for them. I'm unsure if you're familiar with Vocaloid, but it's difficult not to have heard of Hatsune Miku if you've spent time online. Vocaloid is a commercial voice synthesizing program of voicebank samples made by voice providers. They can be used as vocals and has been used for voice acting as well such as the Vocaloid Oliver being used to voice PuppyCat in "Bee and PuppyCat." There's a huge and yet niche fanbase for Vocaloid music as anyone can create their own music using Vocaloid software. Actually, that might be an understatement... Many J-pop artists are commonly also Vocaloid producers.
The units are "Leo:Need", "MORE MORE JUMP!", "Vivid BAD SQUAD", "Wonderlands x Showtime", and "25-ji, Nightcord de." if you're interested in checking them out.
"Love Live!" You guessed it! Another mobile rhythm gacha game! This one is about female school idols. Though most of the games are now defunct, the series is still running strong as this is a multi-media franchise that's been running since 2010. There's a few anime series and uh, Vtubers or something now. I genuinely think "Love Live!" was a sensational hit and is still incredibly iconic in Japan- I'd even say it was influential for anime. There are over 200 or 300 songs now which is a real doozy to listen to them all.
The main units are "μ's", "Aqours", "Nijigasaki High School Idol Club", "Liella!", and "Hasunosora Girls' High School Idol Club" but... I'm not very familiar with the last three units.

ooh, a video about project sekai's music would be really cool! i think its really interesting to analyze how the human and vocaloid voices come together, especially as time goes on (i think the tuning for their vocaloid covers was kinda not that good at the start haha,, they definitely improved as time went on though, and now id say i really like most of their tuning!)
some of my favorite human/vocaloid combined covers from each group that really shine in terms of how they use the vocaloids to their advantage:
*nightcord at **25:00** - lower* (the contrast between meiko and the human singers is just So Good,, she feels like a narrator or something its so cool)
*leo/need - show off* (miku sounds almost like her voice is strumming like a guitar or something? idk how to describe it its just Really Cool)
*wonderlands x showtime - love ka* (similar reason to why i like lower, meiko just sounds really cool contrasted with the human singers i think, especially here where they make her voice kinda growly and spooky sounding)
*vivid bad squad - drop pop candy* (just really fun cover/song in general, although its just the girls in this one), *devil's manner* if you want one with all four (rin's high pitch just really adds an extra layer to the song thats so cool, works really well with the lower/softer human voices harmonizing, good at emphasizing the songs Highlights (and shadows! when she's not singing, the absence of her voice makes the human singers stand out even more when they want a more subtle, darker tone)
besides that, heat abnormal also deserves attention just on its own for the sheer skill required for a human to sing that fast at all, let alone with kaito added to the mix (whos voice also works Very Well in this one)
also most of my favorites are ones where they lean in to the robotic aspect to their advantage, but a few (usually the ones by mitchie m, a producer known for his realistic miku tuning lol) are actually just impressive in how close miku sounds to the human singers? specifically *viva happy,* *newly edgy idols,* and *wah wah world.*
that said, oster project's songs also has some very good covers in that song for humanlike tuning, *miracle paint* and *nijiro stories* both give the vocaloids a clear, bright personality that shines through in their tuning, that don't leave them feeling too bland or cold when paired with their human counterparts)
you should do the rest of the units like valkyrie or ryuseitai!!

when you mentioned leo and tsukasa seem to share the lead i nearly lost it giggling, because you got it kind of right lol leo used to be the leader of knights, but he gave the leadership to tsukasa, however leo is still kind of the face of knights (long story) so they sort of share the spotlight a lot of times
I love seeing anyone review Ensemble Stars! And your comments about their vocals really helped me understand how intricate it can be, especially when you pointed out how each vocalist is positioned differently to fit the theme of a song. And also the nasally sort of voice Tsukasa has.
Each character has a "Voice Actor" or "Seiyuu", they often play characters in other projects aswell so going in and noticing the crazy vocal range they have and how they can switch their style of singing is very fun.
For example, Leo from Knights, has this bright and light hearted sound, but in a different project called "Hypnosis Microphone" his VA plays a character called "Samatoki" who raps and has a very...deeper sound and he rolls his r's and stuff 😂 many times I don't even recognize or notice he voices a character because his range is so crazy.
There's maybe...13 groups in Ensemble Stars, each with their own unique theme and each character having their own unique vocals.
My top 3 groups from Ensemble Stars is:
1)Alkaloid (a more bassy rock quartet)
2)Valkyrie (a duo)
3) Undead (A more alternative rock....but also swing jazz?? Dark quartet)
I'm not gonna lie Ensemble Stars is SO FUN, but there are alot of Japanese music projects like these that are fun to check out. I recommend "Hypnosis Microphone" and "Aopella!"
the thing about japanese voice actors are, they’re very capable of singing with a voice they gave the characters to, they have amazing range
To explain simply, Ensemble stars is a rhythm game focused on idols in an island place called ES. We the player work as the producer and each team in the game have a concept just like a kpop group. There are 4 company in total and knights is under one of the company called New Dimension. To count all team there are 15 teams in all companies combined, Now 14 since one team disbanded and Knights team concept is something like Knights and Chivalry of the sort. Knights also function in a chess kind of way with Tsukasa being the King.
Fun fact! 4/5 knights voice actor's members can sing higher than what their songs usually are, the voice actor behind Tsukasa often asks them to lower the key by one because he can't sing that high lol
ANOTHER FUNFACT BECAUSE I JUST REMEMBERED WHEN ARASHI APPEARED ON THE VIDEO, Arashi identifies as a woman, and if you compare the voice of her actor before (little romance for example) to now (Wonderful happiness) her voice is a slightly higher pitch and I think that's a really interesting thing
EDIT #2 : Ensemble stars (or enstars) has a total of "official" and "permanent" units, those are Fine, trickstars, Ryuseitai, Alkaloid, Eden, Valkyrie, 2winks, CrazyB, Undead, Akatsuki, Ra*bits, Switch, Knights and MaM. With Eden having two subunits, Eve and Adam and MaM being a soloist. There was also Double Face which was a unit between MaM and one CrazyB member.
There's also "shuffle" units which are units created by chosing members from different permanent units and having them make one song together.
Each unit has their own style and genre that matches their concept, for example, Knights songs are often more modern and "appealing" to young girls because their concept of being well knights? but then you have Ryuseitai who is an unit based on hero squads (like power rangers) so their music often resembles more of that style, especially Suisei halation, then you have Valkyrie, whose concept is more victorian and their music is more dramatical and theatrical (Shu is amazing I 100% recommend you to react to Valkyrie! Espeically Meikyu Denshi Kairo) and Undead who is more into rock and jazz styles.
There's a lot of characters with extremely unique voices, Kanata from ryuseitai has something interesting where his voice sometimes sounds like a kazoo? It's endearingly cute but also weird?! There's the twins from 2wink who are voiced by the same person and more!
I feel that u should totally check out Valkyrie, Eden(Adam, Eve) and Alkaloid for the vocals lol
Also I was surprised that u felt Tsukasa in the lead along with Leo in the back with others in the periphery of the song. Because that is the exact relationship in the group history. Leo was the leader/center of the group and the position shifted to Tsukasa who later joined the group as he brought lots of positive changes to the group.
One song named 'We'll be Knights' is a song produced before Tsukasa joined the group and 'Luminous Crown' is when Tsukasa joined and was given the leader/center position. The different atmosphere of the two songs really shows the group relationship effected by Tsukasa very well.
this group is one of many from the game! knights is the group dedicated to chivalry plus each member is associated with a chess piece! tsukasa being the leader is the king, arashi is the queen, leo rook, izumi bishop and ritsu knight. so each group from ensemble stars has their specific theme and genre.

Thank you for reacting to Ensemble Stars. I've always thought it was impressive that the voice actors aren't just singing well but singing well while in character. So it's nice to hear some insight into their vocals.
Sorry that this comment is very long, I'm just a very big fan of the game😓 But Ensemble stars is a Japanese rhythm game! And there are 15 units in the game(not including the newest one since they don't currently have any songs, shuffle units which are units that have one character from a random already existing unit and fusion “units” which are two units singing a song together! There are also some cover songs) but in the current game you follow the group Alkaloid and Crazy b(to a certain degree) since they are the new units that came with the new game. Each character in the game as a real life voice actor and sometimes the voice actors even do concerts.
Ensemble stars is about tapping notes and collecting various cards that can give you outfits that you can put on your characters and change how they dress in a music video. One of my favorite Units is Valkyrie, which only has two characters in it, Shu Itsuki who has pink hair and then Mika Kagehira who has green hair! I would really recommend listening to their songs.
Even though I like all of their songs, there are a few that I would recommend like “Eternal Weaving,” “Le temps des fleurs,” and “Blessing Library.” I wasn't sure how many to recommend so, I just gave three since there were three in this video. If you ever feel like it, I would also recommend checking out the other units! They are all very unique and I love all of their songs. Also sorry if I got anything wrong anyone can feel free to correct me or ask me questions!

i giggled at the comment on ritsu's voice in little romance (im absolutely enamored with its gentleness), the other ones as well i think were very on point and i enjoyed the more technical explanation on their unique voices! enstars has a huge and musically diverse cast, im sure you would enjoy other vocally amazing units such as valkyrie! alkaloid and undead too

all voice actors in enstars are very talented, all the songs you reviewed here are set/related to the most recent parts of the story but in earlier songs their voices may sound different since the songs also reflect the progress the characters have had in their idol journey within the story, this was mentioned a while ago in an interview with the music producers 😊
another fun fact is that Tsukasa's voice actor has talked about how Knights songs are very difficult for him since they're so high

As a huge ensemble stars fan, im gonna let my bias win here (as is everyone else) and recommend Valkyrie!! They has some of the best songs ive ever listened to!! They can go from powerful and dynamic songs (like shukufuku no library, meikyu denshi kairou and gaisenka) to soft and pretty songs (like Le Temps des Fleurs and Uruwashi no Nightingale) and my personal favourite, Acanthe!! Its such a beautiful masterpiece🫶 and i love hoe despite the SHARP contrast their voices have they blend together so perfectly
ensemble stars is a rhythm game based around idols, so these are all supposed to be performances the characters do in universe! and each character has their own voice actor, most of which perform in similar series where theyre performing as a character while singing. theres 15 units, for the most part.
i loved this analysis!! it really makes it even more clear how talented all of the voice actors are and how much thought must have gone into stuff like how the voices fit together and line distribution...

that aside, my personal recommendations of more enstars songs i'd like you to react to: believe 4 leaves (by alkaloid), fallin love it's wonderland (by ra*bits, this one is mostly cuz you gotta hear mitsuru man. also there are two versions of the mv/song and that's because mitsuru's voice actor did fraud and had to be replaced. real shame but maybe he shouldn't have been doing crime in the first place), swingin paroniria (by undead. it's not a typo, that's what the song is called) exceed (by eden), acanthe (by valkyrie), uruwashi no nightingale (by valkyrie as well. this one doesn't have an mv btw), sajou no roukaku (also by valkyrie but the valkyrie of the past, fun. this one has no mv either), yubisaki no ariadne (by crazy:b), silent oath (by knights, i'm actually surprised the original someone didn't suggest this one), no name yet (by double face), noir neige (by la mort, my second favorite shuffle unit. thank you grim reaper christmas), and lastly ringing evil phone (by evil num+, my first favorite shuffle unit. thank you electro-swing vampires). now that's a lot of songs but enstars is over nine years old (wow!) so out of everything that's been released this is like Barely Anything. don't feel obligated to react to any or all of these though they're just suggestions. nice video 👍
I dont usually watch videos like this, but because knights was in the title it caught my interest. Ensemble Stars is a game with a pretty huge set of units. I'd love if you would review other units from the game! Aside from Enstars, a video about hypmic would be cool too :^)
Oh and there are also shuffle units!! Basically different members from units get put into one single unit and create a shuffle unit with its own theme and song!

Ahhh I'm SO glad you did Knights! I love them, and as a TsukasaP it was great to hear your takes on him and the others. People have already said it, but this is just one unit among a whole (wait for it...) ensemble of other characters! Each unit has its own music style so they're all pretty different from one another. I'd love to hear you do more Knights songs, but I would love to hear you do some of the other units too! Valkyrie is definitely one that would be fun to see an analysis done on! As for the characters, I found it interesting that you placed both the redheads as the leaders. Leo was the former leader of Knights, and Tsukasa has taken over as the current leader. Each character has their own 'center' song though. Coruscate Breeze is a Leo-focused song for instance, and Little Romance is a Ritsu focused song.
The game is a rhythm game! It focuses on the stories of the characters and units. Some of it can get a little dark and messy at times, but it's a lot of fun to follow. The characters are all 'idols' though, so some of the videos you will see in the game is of them on stage or set up like a regular music video! I hope that helps a bit!
Never expect anyone to react to one of my favorite games! I’m so happy for this and i hope you could do more with other units too, if you have time for that, of course ❤️
My personal favorite units are Alkaloid and Valkyrie!
For Alkaloid, i recommend “Tsubasa Moratorium” it’s a pop-jazz song and they kind of show their gentle side of singing. Another one is “Believe 4 leaves” their vocals are top-tier in this song! and the last one is “Distorted heart” (For your context in the future, Alkaloid has 4 members, the red hair is Hiiro, the blonde hair is Aira, the purple hair is Mayoi, and the greenish hair is Tatsumi)
Another song that is worth mentioning is “Artistic Partisan” it’s a special song that features both the members from Alkaloid and Valkyrie and it is the most gorgeous song ever! I hope you would be interested 🫶❤️

Ensemble Stars!! Music is a Japanese Idol Rhythm game. There's 14 idol group with 50+ characters. Each group has different genre of music, visuals, and theme. All of the character is fictional and have a Human Voice Actor behind them.
It's really interesting because this game has many genres and different music and of course vocals.
The one who's singing is the Voice Actor, and just discussing about one voice actor is already will be so interesting.
For example, The one who voiced Leo here, is Asanuma Shintaro, he has like CRAZY RANGE in his voice. He as Leo is more high pitched but he has voiced a really rouchy, rough character with low voice too. Or the one who voiced Ritsu here, Yamashita Daiki, in here he sounds so smooth, silky, and soft but his real voice is really high and youthful. And there's another one Tori from the group Fine, the VA is Murase Ayumu, has a really MASSIVE range that he can even voiced female if he wants to.
If we're talking about vocals, I think Valkyrie will be interesting because Shu used a really interesting technique in his singing. Another honorable mention is Eden. Their voice together is so good especially how Hiyori and Jun Harmonize is soooo goood. There's another one a group named 2wink, it has 2 members but both of the characters voiced by one Voice Actor. It's really interesting and shows how good the Voice Acting industry in Japan is

I really loved this video!! I would absolutely love to see you do more ensemble stars songs, as there's a huge range of characters and units!! Tsukasa's voice actor has said that he struggles with higher pitched songs, so I was worried what you would think of his performance in Coruscate Breeze, but you were so positive about all their voices! This was a joy to watch, and everything you explained came across clear, even when I know nothing of singing! I'd love to someday hear your thoughts on the Ensemble Stars unit '2wink'! They're twins, but share 1 voice actor. Their voices manage to be very different in recent songs despite it being the same voice actor and I'd love to see what you think!
Hello hello, I just wanted to drop by and say a big THANK YOU for appreciating Knights' vocals!! I'm not only a huge fan of Knights and have been for many many years, but also someone who's taken vocal training myself ☺️ I'm so glad to see a professional also comment on the voice actors' incredible control over the colors of their own voices. Tsukasa's voice actor was still very young and new to the scene when Ensemble Stars was first released, so his growth from the beginning to now really makes me super proud.
By the way, I'm particularly a fan of Tsukasa (current group leader) and Leo (former leader) and it made me laugh to see you absolutely pin them both as leading. That means the staging and voice direction really brought that out effectively!!
If you're looking for something else voice actor-related with great singing vocals, Tsukasa and Leo's voice actors are also in a project called VS Ambivalenz, and I highly recommend checking out the music there (they have a YT channel) because their singing is *INCREDIBLE*

enstars fan here! enstars is a japanese rhythm gacha game. gacha basically means scout; in the game we get to level up cards for our teams and play the lives/songs (like the songs you just reacted to!) for the first song tsukasa's center, the other 2 songs are event songs which are a part of the game. in knights, tsukasa's their unit (group) leader so he's mostly center for their other songs. often times leo's the center of the song. for little romance and coruscate breeze, they're not the center; in the event from the game, little romance has ritsu as the center whilst leo in coruscate breeze. almost forgot to mention, for songs that are from events they usually have a different concept than the usual concept that the unit is aimed for! wonderful happiness is their latest song as well ^^ and yes, this game has other units too! the game has 15 units; a number of units divided into different agencies/companies. one unit recently added in so they don't have their own song yet as of the time i'm typing this. i'd love for you to react to akatsuki and undead! feel free to react to them separately ^^ akatsuki has 3 members, keito (guy with green hair, wears glasses), kuro (red hair) and souma (purple hair). akatsuki's concept is traditional. i'd love for you to react to usubeniiro no yakusoku! you can choose a few other songs that you'd like too ^^ undead on the other hand, has 4 members; rei (black hair), kaoru (blonde), koga (gray hair) and adonis (purple hair). undead's songs are usually rock, so if you see some of them not being the genre rock it means they're an event song :] but that doesn't apply all the time in general 👍 i recommend seeing swingin paroniria, it's an event song and it's a recent song ^^ hope you have fun reacting to them! looking forward to it 💖
edit: forgot to add, this game's a japanese game, but they have plenty of other servers for different places. they're all each separate games and not in one ^^ the japanese server being the most up-to-date with events and content in general
I love this video! I dont understand the work that goes into singing at all lol. It's very cool to hear someone explain each character's style and techniques. I have a new appreciation for the work these voice actors do. I'm so glad this video popped up in my recommendations 🙌

A lot of other people have already explained stuff about the game, but I also reccomend reaction to the unit (band) Valkyrie! They have really interesting and good music. I reccomend reacting to Acanthe and Les Temps des Fleurs.

there's a lot more units/bands in this game! I recommend trying Valkyrie and Alkaloid next. Valkyrie got like the picture that come up in your mind when you think of high class orchestra. Alkaloid got a strong solid vibe since they're soldiers theme. as familiar as a knight and soldier are, they're still different from Knights!
You can also try a few of their solo! each characters have their own solo song(no mv) it showed the character grown with each new one compare to their previous one
this game is a Japanese idol producing rhythm game knights this group is one of many, there are other groups each with a unique theme and different type of music you should definitely try them and see for yourself as for the the singing it's done by voice actors not AI

this was a really fun video to watch!! ive never really seen people talk about enstars in this kind of technical way so i found it interesting to learn what makes up some of their vocals :) if you're interested in other enstars groups i would love to hear your thoughts on alkaloid as mayoi's voice especially is very unique, though they all have great voices in my opinion ^^

I started watching the video because Knights is mentioned, but I stayed for your explanations!!
many have already explained the premesis of enstars and how the unit system works, but i really do recommend looking into each unit more, as well as the ex-units (for example, valkyrie in the current story era of the game is a duo consisting of the characters shu and mika, but previously they had another member, nazuna, who is now in the unit ra*bits! i'm not a professional or anywhere near it, but i find the vocal techniques that nazuna's voice actor had to learn to sing the two songs released for the former valkyrie very interesting.) the units all vary greatly in style- switch is my personal favorite, with an upbeat, almost magical electronic sound, but the valkyrie i mentioned before goes more for a more orchestral, elegant sound and appearance. there are also shuffle units, which take members from different units to form a temporary unit of 4-5 people and are focused on breaking the standard of a character's image. i think they're a great way to see them break out of the limits of their usual unit's performances as well! for example, mika from valkyrie is in a shuffle unit called puffy☆bunny, which is a peppy easter-themed unit with an extremely upbeat song that greatly contrasts mika's usual appearences with valkyrie. every character in this game has something unique to offer, and it's definitely worth checking the rest of them out in my opinion! i hope you can survive the swarm of crazy enstars fans like myself coming into your comments like this 😭❤️

I'm not going to lie, this video brought in a lot of KnightsP and players of Ensemble Stars
I loved this video!! I also REALLY love Ensemble Stars!! Watching a vocal coach analyze the different physical components, methods and sounds of these characters was super interesting. I’ve always believed that the voice actors in this game were EXTREMELY talented, since many of them are professional singers and they’re signing in ways that aren’t their natural voices. Like obviously, that takes talent?? But I’m not a voice trainer or a singer, so I wouldn’t “really know”, if you know what I mean. Plus, the game comes out with a new song or two every week, and at this point in its life, there are over 200+ songs. Every once in a while I’ll try to introduce someone I know to a couple enstars songs, and they’re just NEVER feeling it even with the wide range of music genres and singers in the game. 😅 I don’t mean to make it sound like I’m discrediting the efforts of the singers and company. But sometimes I’ll be sitting there blasting a few of the game’s many songs through my headphones and wonder “is the music really as good as I’ve been making it out to be?” Lol. Despite this, seeing you praise and describe the composition of these songs and their singers has allowed me to truly take in the fact that there IS a considerable amount of thought and effort that goes into these songs. Overall, this video has just added to my already extreme appreciation for this game!
I know that most of the other comments have already pretty much defined what Enstars is about and everything, but I just wanted to add my own interpretation. So Ensemble Stars, also know as Enstars, is a gacha rhythm game with a visual-novel like way of storytelling. It’s best to describe it as a coming of age type of story where the audience follows around 49 young adult characters trying to navigate the trials and tribulations of living in society as idols. They try to define what being an idol means for themselves, work through past and current traumas, and work to make sure their personal lives are kept away from the prying eyes of the public. The expansive amount of individual in-game stories are often very “wacky”, although it does get VERY dark at times. I remember once reading one of the writers?? for the franchise referring to it as a “tragi-comedy” and although I can’t actually verify if that’s a real thing someone said or who that someone was, I do think that it’s a perfect way to describe Enstars’ story.
I hope you’ll look at some more Enstars songs again during your video game song journey. In specific, I recommend Valkyrie. They’re 100% my favorite unit. Uruwashi no Nightingale, Library of Blessings and Le Temp Des Fleurs are my top three recommendations if you wanna hear the voices of Shu Itsuki and Mika Kagehira at their current peak.
I’m definitely gonna follow you and watch your other reviews outside of Enstars!!
a lot of people have explained the unit system, ensemble stars in general and the other groups, so id like to explain why these groups have different "focus" or characters that sing more than others!
basically most of these songs are from the center or focus events in-game for those characters. specifically, Little Romance is Ritsu's center focus event, thus why he is almost always in the middle or singing the most lines. similarly, Coruscate Breeze is Leo's center focus event, which is why he's in the middle and singing the most.
these songs and other songs from enstars relatively follow the same formula depending on who is the focus center, but for songs that are not / doesn't have an in-game focus character, the default center focus typically goes to the leader of the unit or is shared between two other members.
i hope this helps to understand enstars and it's music! im looking forward to more ensemble stars videos if you're up for analyzing more of them! (i also reccomend checking out their solos from each album!)
if you're interested in other rhythm game japanese idol media, i highly also suggest idolish7 and/or project sekai!
Most have already explained everything, but the whole thing about the swords and fighting is the theme of the unit. They're supposed to be knights and in-universe their main audience is young women who they refer to as their princesses, it's a very fan-service heavy group and they're incredibly popular both in-universe and in real life.
Other units have different themes, such as Ryuseitai who are similar to the power rangers and their songs are about fighting evil with super powers. There's also Switch who's theme is magic and the singers are witches and they preform with spells. The unit Fine (pronounced like the music term) has a lot of angelic themes and have a lot of more elegant music.
Also if you do another Ensemble Stars video, i suggest Valkyrie they have soo many good songs to talk about i really want to see you cover them. Or Ra*bits since i think their music and voices are really unique.
Side note: Since the characters are mostly supposed to be in high school (some have graduated with time passing in the story), a lot of the voice actors have actually been making their voice change to fit more into the characters not having a lot of professional experience and having younger voices, rather than just using their fully trained singing voices and i think that's really cool.

Great explanations, this was so engaging! Hoping you'll check out more songs from Enstars. A lot of people have recommended songs and bands already, but I definitely think the band Valkyrie is worth checking out if you want to analyze vocals.

I absolutely love your input on this video and I would also be so interested to hear your input on another Japanese music franchise called Aoppella! It’s not a game or nothing like that but what makes them very unique compared to other franchises is that they sing acappella with occasional beatboxing. There’s a song called 5+5+6 = voice to voice and it showcases all 3 groups in one and it highlights each of their vibe and incredible voices and I would love to hear your thoughts
i love this video! I have recently gotten into ensemble stars (about 3 or 4 months in) so I know all the characters but still have trouble connecting their voices to the character and this video really explain it well!

You are right about Leo and tsukasa being the leaders! Lore accurately Leo passed his leading “king” status to tsukasa through the game, but he still supports him when needed
I really love Leo Tsukinaga, all the characters have their own VAs! I believe you should listen to “We’ll be knights“, “Endless symphonia”, “Acanthe”, “Sacred Youth games”, “Genuine revelation”, “Dawning angels”, “seven days «prismagic»” and many others ofc!!!
It also would be interesting if you compare two past bands, each of them have only 2 songs and lore-wise they are somehow put in comparison: “Five oddballs” and “Fine-o”
The most artistic band is “Valkyrie” I suppose, so you should also totally check them out!!

I was happy to see you describe the characters' voices similar to their actual personalities (e.g. Leo is very cheerful and youthful, while Ritsu is more gentle and laidback). I think it's a testament to the casting process of Ensemble Stars. This is one thing that I feel gets often overlooked. A lot of the members of the cast never voice acted before, but they ended up being perfect fits for their characters anyway. For example, Izumi's actor Masami Itou is primarily a stage director and writer. To date (more than 9 years since Enstars started), Izumi is his only voice acting role.... So I often wonder how these actors were discovered, but I'm very grateful that they were cast.
Because just from hearing the characters speak or sing, like you did, you already get a pretty accurate impression of what they're like. I think it's a really fascinating skill, to be able to give so much life to something with just your voice. So I became a lot more interested in voice actors because of Enstars. 😊

I am here to explain Enstars to you as I have been with this game since its first second year anniversary, so about 8 years. It’s basically a rhythm game where you pull for cards and level them up to get a higher score. All characters are voiced by real voice actors. There are 54 main characters and 15 units. I’d say this game is for 13+ because it deal with serious topics such as depression, death, kidnapping, and sui*id. They also say naughty words.

Yejun (blue hair), Noah (Blond hair), Eunho (White/black hair), Bambi (pink hair) and Hamin (black hair).
They are humans behind the “anime” character. They also produce their own music and choreography.
Very interesting. Everyone else kind of covered everything about explaining the game, I don't know if anyone else mentioned but the voice actors for Izumi and Arashi are also stage actors.

9:16 to put it simply yes. They're an idol group but in the story for that song they where having a "dual" between members. Knights lore is interesting lol.
