A Beautiful man with a Beautiful voice, he was much more appreciated in London for the Royal Gala Performances he attended for Her Majesty the Queen, much to the dismay of a Certain Mario Lanza, who actually found out on stage the Difference between a OPERA singer and a Film Star. The differences were Gigantic. Di Stefano was at best one of the greatest Tenors of the 20th Century, I say at best for good reason, when he was first heard in London he had a Beautiful Lyric Spinto voice with incredible diminuendo's, which he still had in later life by the way, his voice was powerful, but in his early years to many, became to much involved with the Firework performances of Callas which did certainly harm the Voice, not only for him I may add. My Grandfather was born early enough 1879 to witness many if not most of the Greatest Tenors of not only the 20th Century but also the 19th Century, for him it became an obsession of Diaries about Singers Conductors Musicians and Opera and Concerts itself, at the age of Sixteen He won a singing competition in what we call Cymru ( Wales) in our Eisteddfodau competition, witnessed by a group of people that were certainly known in our Land and the World of Opera and song itself, Ben Davies was a Cymric (Brythonic) Tenor of the old School and was a Guest Judge along with a number of other singers and Musicians who were also known. In that audience also was a certain Sir Charles Santley along with the Queen of Opera at that time in 1896 Madame Adelina Patti, my father was not a fluent English speaker, his first Language was the Celtic Brythonic Language ( Welsh as the English call it ) the British Language, for English was a Foreign tongue even in the late 19th Century, after being presented his award by Sir Charles along with Ben Davies, he was told a Certain lady would like to meet him for Tea the next day. He was to meet with Adelina Patti at her Castle home in the Cwmtawe ( Swansea Valley) Craig y Nos, this he did and sat and talked with Madame Patti Sir Charles and Ben Davies for Two Hours before being asked to accompany the Guests by Madame Patti to her small theatre. He was accompanied by Ben Davies to the small stage where he was to sing again his winning pieces of Music which were Two Traditional Cymric songs and the Tenor aria from Faaust also to be sung in Cymric , he sang as he did the High C full Chest, which the small audience was taken aback with for such a youth at barely Sixteen then. so much so that Patti stood and applauded with a smile as broad as her wonderful dress. He then joined the audience for a small soiree of items by Patti together with Santley Davies and another Lady name not known who was French, but was a wonderful rather Beautiful lady a Contralto, I was told that the Pianist was Landon Ronald , but my Grandfather did not say his name, I think it was Mme Patti's personal accompanist, although my Grandfather did come to know Mr Ronald in the years to come. My Grandfather was trained in Italy and saw Caruso for the first time in Late 1897 and Later saw him again a number of times in Livorno Milan and Elsewhere in the North of Italy, he visited Rome and Naples and saw Borgatti Tamagno and De Reszke in those years as well on a trip to Paris, all the great Tenors and other Voices of that time that were in Europe was possible to see, to listen to including De Marchi, Italian Tenors were everywhere. After Training he made a successful debut in Nice in Faust in French, by this time my Grandfather was fluent in English Italian French and German and even was able to speak Russian to his teacher, even though he was of Jewish birth loved to hear Russian spoken. His career was broken by a tragic bout of Pneumonia which nearly ended his life in 1906, he was then singing leading roles in Theatres in Britain and Ireland, he met my Grandmother in Paris when he heard her speak in Cymric, they Married within six months, she was a Trained Pianist and actually did a bit of composing as well. My Grandfather was unable to continue with singing in Full Opera's because of the strain on his heart after the Pneumonia, three years later in the 1908/09 Season at Covent Garden he was to start another Career in the Chorus which lasted till 1940, he heard and sang with all the best at that time including Caruso Bonci Zenatello Ansseau Martinelli Slezak Taccani later Lauri Volpi Gigli Roswaenge Wittrisch Melchior Lorenz Pistor Thill and dozens of others, his knowledge was very wide. He saw Del Monaco Di Stefano Corelli Filipeschi Domingo Pavarotti and many others up till his death in 1977 at 98. His opinion was that Di Stefano was the greatest Italian Tenor after WW2 in beauty of tone ability and sheer vocal professionalism, but the influence of Callas certainly spoiled his years in the early sixties, but he admired the man for standing by Callas in her final years, where others left her, Callas was a phenomenon , he said so much vocal ability was hers, but the reckless schedule in the early years took a toll, Tragedy was her life , Di Stefano was her rock in her later years, where others just used and in a way abused her. His opinion was that Caruso was simply in another Universe not only from other Tenors but other Voice types as well, there could not be a successor to Caruso, that he agreed with Martinelli, simply because he was unique, but he did say that the young Di Stefano and at times the Old Di Stefano, had a unique ability. to make you weep like Caruso could. Diolch yn fawr, Prynhawn da.

Grande voce... Tecnica sbagliata.... Suoni aperti tutta gola...
