  • It is our responsibility as consumers to educate ourselves on the fashion industry so that we can make informed and intentional decisions.
    Fast fashion can be defined as cheap, trendy clothing, that samples ideas from the catwalk or celebrity culture and turns them into garments in high street stores at breakneck speed to meet consumer demand. - Good On You (goodonyou.eco/what-is-fast-fa...)
    We now have about 52 "seasons" thanks to the quick weekly turnaround of products by fast fashion brands. The demand for clothing, accessories and shoes across the world has brought the fast fashion sector's worth up to $1.5 trillion as of 2020. It's the second largest polluting industry, right behind oil.
    How to identify a fast fashion brand:
    ➝ cheap, low quality materials
    ➝ short turnaround time from when you see a celebrity wearing an item to when you see it in store
    ➝ offshore manufacturing in cheap labour countries (eg. Bangladesh, India, Cambodia)
    ➝ limited quantities of specific garments
    ➝ thousands of styles within one retailer's website or store

    “Are they (fast fashion companies) meeting a demand? Or trying to create a demand in our society?” I cannot stop thinking about the obscene amount of money spent for marketing a product and getting fashion influencers to push a trend that is also so problematic in fast fashion.

    This! This video made me subscribe. Hyperconsumerism is promoted every day within influencer communities - when fast fashion brands send free product for influencers to promote, it only encourages us to keep wanting and buying more. Content creators have so much power to drive change! This is so so important and I'm so happy to see content creators like yourself using your platform to share this message tenfold.

      Hi Shannon! Welcome here! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me. I completely agree, and as an Influencer I can attest to this. It actually began to overwhelm me to the point that I had to start rejecting gifts from PR brands. I no longer accept random gifts from brands for this very reason and I truly hope that fellow Influencers will see what I'm sharing and strive to do better themselves. I appreciate your support on here!

    I'd love to hear what you come up with in terms of sustainable, ethical fashion brands that are petite-friendly in their sizing. I appreciate your point about the lack of inclusive sizing being a barrier; I'd love to be more deliberate with my spending, but I really struggle to find petite sizes in any of the sustainable brands on the market these days.

    • @HaleyVillena
      @HaleyVillena  3 года назад

      I'll be completely honest in saying that there's not much out there for petites when it comes to sustainable and ethical fashion brands. Getting items tailored/hemmed is our best bet right now. Personally, I feel that I have everything I need so I won't be buying or "trying on" any new brands and clothes. I'm planning to talk more about minimalism this year as it's really opened my eyes in regards to what we "need" versus "want".

    • @lapetitepoire5
      @lapetitepoire5 3 года назад

      @@HaleyVillena While getting items hemmed is sometimes possible with simple alterations like pant length or sleeve length, tailoring is far more difficult and complicated when it comes to alterations such as narrowing the shoulders, taking up the waist, or completely reconstructing a dress or a jacket. I'd love to say sure, I'll just buy everything ill-fitting and get it tailored, but that's not usually possible. Especially for many of us petites with curvier proportions or shorter torsos who simply can't get away with regulars in tops, tees, sweaters, jackets, dresses, coats or anything else of the kind. I'd love to invest in quality ethical pieces all the time but I find there's rarely anything on the market that comes anywhere near fitting.
      On the other hand, you're absolutely right that we need far less than we think we do, and that repurposing or wearing existing items rather than buying new ones is usually a better idea where possible. Especially now since COVID, I find myself needing very little in the way of new clothes.

    • @HaleyVillena
      @HaleyVillena  3 года назад

      @@lapetitepoire5 Yes I know it can get very difficult when tailoring those areas of items. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me! Hopefully over time we will start to see petite sustainable & ethical brands surfacing.
      COVID has definitely been an eye-opener for me as well. Less is more 🙌🏽

    • @HaleyVillena
      @HaleyVillena  3 года назад +1

      Absolutely! There are many other ways to live more sustainably though that don't put a hole in our pockets. Using what you already have, buying second-hand, reducing plastic use, making coffee at home instead of buying at cafes, etc. are just a few ways to improve if sustainable fashion isn't an option.

    • @inalykowska
      @inalykowska 3 года назад

      @@HaleyVillena yup! i live as sustainably as i can, and buy from sustainable brands when possible, and only buy from fast fashion if i *need* the item and couldn’t find it second hand first. we need everyone trying imperfectly, than a few people being perfect.

    As a fashion graduate the most unsustainable aspect of fashion is within the supply chain, specifically in tier 2 of the fashion supply chain which uses a lot of water usage, harmful chemicals and gases to treat and dye clothes. If fashion brands truly want to be Sustainable they need to invest money in better environmentally friendly equipments to produce clothing instead they choose to spend money on showing how green their stores are or producing "sustainable" clothing line😒 the industry won't change until the consumer changes

    It's really unfortunate how we as humans have created this problem for ourselves and because people tend to want to fit in, I really don't see it changing. I read your description talking about how we have 52 seasons now which insane! I have lost weight over the past year so I don't really have any clothes and I like thrifting so I tend to do that, but I'm trying to become more intentional with that too because there's a mindset that since it's cheap, I can get it. And then on the other hand, when you gain all this knowledge and let's say want to live more minimally, you almost feel bad for donating because everything eventually ends up as waste. At times it feels like there's nothing that you can do.

    • @HaleyVillena
      @HaleyVillena  3 года назад

      Hi Brianna! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. It is quite unfortunate, but although there is lots of work to be done, there are also so many positives coming out of these realizations. So many individuals, foundations, companies and brands working to change the industry. It can be really overwhelming and scary when we only think of the negatives, but I think that small steps and consistent improvements are going to work over time. There are alternatives to donating items; selling them through your local Facebook Marketplace or yard sales. Even to family and friends for free if you know someone is in need! There are also companies that take in unwanted clothing so that they can be repurposed. It takes more effort but I think it's worth it!
