  • Lagi argues that the Pacific Island countries must change the narrative about being small island states. Rather, they are large ocean states who possess great untapped wealth and could one day be an oceanic superpower.
His talk is distilled from 14 years experience overseeing national, regional and international projects, leading expeditions on numerous ship tours targeting legal and illegal overfishing, and documenting threats to the Pacific Ocean on Greenpeace ships including the Rainbow Warrior.
Lagi Toribau is an independent environmental consultant with a focus on oceans conservation and management based in Suva, Fiji.
Previously, he was Program Director for Greenpeace Africa looking after program operation across the African continent, working out of Johannesburg. He also led Greenpeace’s Global Tuna Political Project.
For several years, Lagi also coordinated Greenpeace’s Oceans and Fisheries campaign in the Pacific, which included a number of climate and political-related initiatives in the region as well as across the global Greenpeace movement.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
