I pulled into a rest area in Mississippi and there were signs that said no overnight parking. I asked the onsite Security if there was a place that I could park and charge up batteries and just rest a bit but not take up spaces that trucks might need. He showed me where to park and then told me I could stay until the morning and wouldnt' be bothered. Kudos and many thanks to the State of Mississippi.

I've stayed overnight in hospital parking lots. They are usually pretty full of vehicles and have vehicles coming and going all hours of the day and night so it is easy to stealth in them, if you are in a van or smaller RV. A larger RV may be doable in a larger hospital's parking lot if you stay out in the fringe areas of the lot.

We stayed overnight at a Cracker Barrel and Flying J on our first long RV trip from PA to Florida. Both had RV parking. I asked permission, both places had designated RV parking. At the Cracker Barrel we were the only ones when we got there, but the RV lot was full by morning. In both places I felt that it was safe place to park overnight.

I was told by a Wal Mart manger not to ask. If you ask, walmart assumes liability cause they know your there. If you dont ask technically your trespassing and Wally World has no liability. Cabela's and Bass Pro shops same place. Eastern PA has two. They have dog kennels, water and dump stations. Very accommodating to rv'ers.

Depends on the Church big time. It's usually parishiners that are the security, and freakout for anything out of ordinary. So, just ask, and usually not a problem unless you have heavy metal paintings on the side and we can't tell if it's abadoned RV or not.

That's very encouraging to hear! My husband and I will be going to a church conference in a different state and wondered about that! We just bought a motor home because we were tired of paying for hotels and getting dirty rooms. 😕 Of course we'd call first to see if it's okay with the church. 👍🏿

I used to deliver camping trailers and motorhomes to dealers from the factories. One of my favorite spots has turned out to be church parking lots, except for Saturday night's. I have even filled my water tank with their spickets, on my personal camper. Stopping on the car side of rest parks and taking up a few spaces has also worked well and I've never had a problem.

That’s a good idea to ask about the best place for an RV to park. The issue with truckstops is that working truckers are often struggling to find safe places to park. Of course we try to be considerate of their needs and choose locations that are RV appropriate. Great idea to talk to the truckstop in question and select the best location

As a converted Mini-van Gypsies my wife and I always find places to spend the night .Casino Parking, Truck Stops , Park And Rides, Churches , Bowling Alleys, Hospital parking lots . My van is stealth It had it's own refillable water supply , Roof top shower , Portable gas generator that is quite quiet. Solar Panel that will run a hot plate , a single Coleman burner . Blacked out windows. and a Pee tube with a P-trap, tank, and a drain built it . Using a my portable crapper is a bit tough in parking lots , so I just go inside where we park . Airport parking lots are also a great place. 8 bucks a night to sleep is not bad . Apartment house parking visitors parking is also a good option . Always park away from the main entrance

TIP: To deal with loud sounds and running trucks, we use a meditation sound machine to sleep to. It makes Rain, Thunder, Wind, Brook/Stream, Forest and AC Fan. This is much easier to train yourself to sleep to and it usually blocks out noises like heavy trucks or Semi Refers pretty good. We discovered this because we lived for decades next to a Garbage Truck company. We REALLY love being out and about now and the sound machine (I think $19 from Bed Bath and Beyond) was a great find. We recently seen a new one with clock and alarm and mood lighting with sound machine at Aldi's Grocery store on their gift/item isle. We might stop at one and get it to retire the old one.

Our most frequent problem with casinos is the smoking. And yes they often times have small dedicated areas for non-smokers but sometimes they don't have doors to them and then you just smell the same amount of smoke as you do anywhere else in the casino. But we do think them for allowing us to Camp there

So if I may ask you, and please believe me when I say I'm not trying to start anything negative - is there as much animosity among truckers toward RV'ers as I've heard some folks claim? If so, what can be done to ease it? I've never had any problems myself.

    • @rosssmith9870
      @rosssmith9870 5 лет назад +1

@@jimloth6091 As a trucker for 38 years I can tell you a small percentage of drivers resent RVs in "their" parking spots especially if the parking is full. They are working and subject to federal hours of service rules. You can actually be risking damage to your rig parking (AMONG) the big rigs. When parking at truck stops try not to park (AMONG) the big rigs and you should be okay. Four wheel RVs parked in a regular car spot are of no concern. If the truck stop has an RV section that shouldn't be a problem either. Sure, RVs park with the big trucks but you should realize your taking more of a risk.

Great tips! I have stayed at all of the mentioned locations. I generally prefer a Cracker Barrel which I like their breakfast anytime. A truck stop with the designated RV spots is nice and they also usually have a nice restaurant like a Dennys, dump, water, propane are available, and you can freshen up with a nice LONG hot shower! Saves on depending on the resources of the RV.
I will not stay at a truck stop that doesn't have the designated RV spots. Truckers need the space!

The truck stops have RV parking cause they don't care about the drivers, they try to make money they don't care how.
Again we are not there by choise, we're one a schedule this means that
      1) if I'm short on time and your in line at cashier, I may have to leave and might not get food that day or water.
      2) I was in a area where there was no truck stop and need a shower and your in line for a shower, then I might have to go more days without a shower.
All because you were there unnecessarily.

I travel in a van with a bed in it so it's somewhat easier for me. I've parked at truck stops and try to find the most unobtrusive place to park. Often in the parking lot
under a lighed area. Then in the morning I'll get breakfast there and fill up with gas. It's important to respect everybody.
Also, I stayed at casino in the overflow parking lot. I thought I'd go in and loose ten dollars to pay for my overnight parking but what happened was I played
a slot for about fourty minutes and left with an extra ten dollars. I tried.
State camp grounds aren't free but they're usually not very expencive and quite often have showers and very nice natural scenery.

Hi, I've had some luck with hospital parking lots. If you come in after 7pm day working
staff & visitors have usually left for the day
and lots are usually large and fairly empty.
Will check in with security if they are around. Will advise
    that you will be gone
by 7 or 8am before day
    traffic arrives. Security
    staff is usually very accommodating.

As a trucker, I can tell you that there is a national shortage of parking for us drivers. Rest areas, truckstops, pull overs, and other place like this is our only really parking. We have to plan ahead and so should you. As a RVer too, I have park at casino, Box stores, Hardware stores and even called the last minute to rv park to get a spot at night so I will not take up a spot from a driver that is working. But then again, I am usually driving by 0500 and stopping by 1700 that night. I can relax and have alittle fun instead of worrying about a place to park. I only had one issue but I managed to get it to a box store and next morning, fix the issue. Part store was next door.
Yes these spots are free, but just remember that a truckers need it more then you. You are supposed to be having fun not stuck a rest area or truck stop.

We only occasionally boondock in our RV. Some of those state parks that have RV sites that you pay for but cannot reserve in advance also have an over-flow area to boondock for free until a space becomes available (we stayed one night in the overflow lot at the Bend of the Colorado State Park near Laughlin NV). We have also camped for free on top of a mesa on BLM land north of Valley of Fire State Park when all the park's fee-pay campsites were filled (much quieter and a better view than in the park's camping area). I would not try it with a travel trailer, but if you have a smaller motor coach or a truck camper that is easy to turn around, you may want to look for flat spaces next to unpaved roads on National Forest Service land -- just make sure the ground is not soft from recent rains. I have also seen RVs parked in those vast Bass Pro parking lots. When traveling in the Southwest, I have seen a few locations where there is free overnight big rig parking in unpaved parking lots located between a Denny's restaurant and a La Quinta motel and close to an interstate's entry and exit ramp -- saw a few RVs and pickups with horse trailer parked there too.
I have also noticed that some of the state parks in the desert Southwest are set half a mile or more back from the nearest highway and the road to the park will sometimes have large unpaved pullouts fairly close to the highway where travelers sometimes park overnight. I would not park overnight anywhere where a sign is posted that forbids overnight parking -- but if there is no sign and the pull-out is not on private property and it is getting dark, I probably would stay there overnight too.
We often stop at Wal-Mart parking lots to have a lunch break in our RV but have never parked there overnight. I have heard that some Wal-Marts lease the property their store is on and the actual property owner does not permit overnight camping. In some of the less prosperous regions, I have been approached by panhandlers in Wal-Mart parking lots and seen some sketchy looking people car-camping in beat-up old cars in Wal-Mart parking lots so would be reluctant to park my RV there overnight for fear of having to deal with someone trying to break-in.

This is for mostly stealth campers or small class B type campers. Auto repair shops with overnight drop key boxes. I never had a problem parking at these places even in middle of a town. I just get up before the shop opens and drive off. No cops, security or even the shop owner ever bother me for that overnight stay. Another place I stay a lot over night. Is a big parking lot that combines with two businesses. Mostly with a gas station, restaurant, motel, or strip mall. Park right between the two businesses and I never had a problem parking over night as well.

A place you might check out Michigan is State Forest Campgrounds. All but 4 are first come first served, that said they have vault toilets and no running ( a pump) but hey it's a place to stay. They're probably pretty crowded on the weekend, us michiganders like our fishing but during the week I wouldn't think it would be a problem, especially before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. I also wouldn't pull in there with a 43 ft. Diesel Pusher.

Concerning Truck Stops, you can reserve a spot at TA/Petro stops....may cost, also if you need a shower, it costs $10-15, but if you see a trucker at the kiosk, ask if he might slide you in as a co-driver and it's free(I have done this a few times and no issues, as a driver and a stop in visitor)....

Also as long you are not over sized, the N.Y.State Barge Canal allows parking at the locks. There are some pull off's on Route 17, and the highway is not as noisy as the thruway. Route 81 from Pa. to the 1000 Islands has plaza's and pull off's. Good for 1 night .Route 20 has small gravel area's to use. The police are in and out of these places so they are safe. If you're parking in places that are intended for trucks because you don't know how to plan your trip impark in an appropriate place you are an a******. People that do this should be fined. Now that truck driver will have to drive another couple of hours probably violating his logbook trying to find a place to sleep so he doesn't kill your wife and kids in a minivan.

We've stayed at THE ABSOLUTE BEST pullout EEVVAA in Newfoundland! On the way to Niagra Falls, we had to pull over in Rochester, NY. at a truck stop. There were some "lurkers", but they did their thing and left. We really enjoy using our TT in the heat of battle on the road, generator, cooking, and staying out in the wild of humanity. The "spidey sense" does have to come into effect sometimes and we just leave. Looking forward to a UP trip in the Summer.

I've had good luck scouting truck stops via Google Maps satellite and street views. Sometimes they have dedicated RV spots or just available pull-through spots that will work. Sometimes they have a gravel overflow area that doesn't tend to fill up. Some of them also have awkward hard-to-use spots in corners or where signs are partially blocking the spot so they work OK for a small or medium RV but not a semi.

not all rest areas allow for overnight parking or may have a time limit, if there is separate area for cars and RV's, be sure to use that area instead of the truck area for the reasons you gave.... be sure to look for signs.... even when there are signs, the weather may dictate that it is safer to not enforce the rules as we got caught up in snow in southern VA on 81... truckers were pulled off the road on the shoulders before and after the rest area so we pulled in too, right next to the spot reserved for the state police and no problem (easy to do with a 20 foot class B) thank you for putting this together in an easy to understand video :)

Thank you ! I copied this & hope to be out on the road in the next year or so. I am from the northeast & would like to return, if only to show my daughter some of the beautiful places I frequented up there, including the Shawongunk( sp?) mountain range, specifically Mohonk Mountain House. It was only 5-10 minutes from where I lived for 10 years & is a great short hike, with varying trails, including a more difficult one called "the Labyrinth " and "Lemon-squeeze". Luckily, people have posted that hiking trail in sped-up versions. She was very eager to do it until the video, where in no time, she found herself on the edge of her seat, eyes wide open( or the opposite, practically glued shut), for safety reasons ofcourse! Lol... I was injured in a wreck or two & am having surgeries and procedures...but can't wait to hit the open road. Your videos are so good & thorough. I had no idea about truck stops, having only rested at them in cars & when moving to Florida from upstate N.Y. I assumed they had areas for cars & then truckers and rv's in an other areas,so that is helpful. The sounds did not bother me but would not want to take up a space they need for work/rest...I tend to like to drive long distances at night, hanging well behind a couple of truckers, keeping in pace with one another, letting them light my way, informing me of the curves, deer, other potential hazards up on ahead..& pull over to rest during busy peak times. I am so glad you two & so many others are acting like pioneers for this life style because it was a dream of my dads that always interested me. I have to admit that I am a little nervous about going solo, but have hiked mountains solo, even getting caught in a rain storm, whistling at birds, sharing granola with them, squirrels & chipmunks that sometimes kept me company for good distances. I have helped my dad (& numerous others)build things & have basic knowledges and eagernesses to learn as much as possible beforehand & as I go, but admittedly a little fearful as my income is only about $1,000/ month, rcving SSD, at the moment. That income has not afforded me to live in areas that I am familiar with or I would ever choose, given a choice. Most lower income rentals I've lived in have cost me far too much, in all areas of life & offered no sense of quality of life that I found worthwhile, at all. Based on your experiences & stories you've heard...are their any safety measures you would recommend most, personal & vehicle wise? My stomach churns when pple have acted like it was a positive thing to find an inexpensive( on paper only) place to live because they are so aweful and the general public has not been kind towards people with disabilities such as mine. I have many areas that can be very debilitating at times but almost all are deeply impacted by stress, uncontrollably. I was a country girl that also loved road trips...

Hey Sean! I see that you still got skills and talent with the ole geetar and singing. Oh how I love to hear you perform. Anyhow, I also wanted to put another option in your overnight arsenal. Pick up what is called a "Pocket Truck Stop Guide" this handy little guide tells you about all the places on various interstates and highways across the country where you can rest for a spell. It tells you all the amenities (or lack there of) to expect at these various locations. A new release is issued once a year and only costs a few bucks. I wanna say I bought one on eBay for $7. They are very user friendly. You don't have to be a rockstar (like yourself) to use one. Kristi looks beautiful as always. And you are always good for a good chuckle and good content. Keep on rockin' in the free world.

Great list! I have no problem using the truck stops... I just fill up my rig at the pump before I park, pull around to the parking area and crank up the generator. My generator is no louder than their truck and it's some of the best sleep I've had! I figure if I'm paying a premium price (sometimes as much as 50 cents per gallon) for their fuel I can use all their services. I always eat at least once and usually top off the tank (and coffee cup) again before I leave in the morning. The common denominator here to is use common sense, follow the rules, clean up after yourself and don't be a jerk. Loloho!!!

Great video thank you for putting this list together. One thing to point out here in SD (San Diego) I would NOT recommend people boondock on the streets reason being a law was past about 5 months ago that it is illegal in the entire county to park overnight. Once I get my rv in the next few months I am planning to start a channel as well for San Diego RV full time life to show people what is best but I would suggest if you need to stay within SD to perhaps call all walmarts around the area, lowes, etc (places known to have big parking lots) and find out which ones allow overnight and how long and plan to overnight at those locations then in the day time after 6 (since it is illegal from 2-6am to park on the street) go to a nice beach front street destination for the day. There are plenty but again just make sure PLEASE not to park on the streets people are getting ticketed left and right for it and because many are pretentious out here they will QUICKLY call the cops on you as well and I would hate to hear of people getting towed and what not. Also use Spotangels the app to find solid free parking but ALWAYS check the signs in the area. Hope this helps GOD bless everyone :)
