  • Burned off in the dog days of summer 1984, here's the complete broadcast of an unsold pilot for a show entitled At Your Service as aired on the NBC Network via Chicago's WMAQ Channel 5.
This was an ancestor to the short-lived 1987-88 series Marblehead Manor. In this form, this pilot - about the goings-on in a New England mansion - starred Derek McGrath, Megan Gallagher, Joseph Maher, Garrett Morris (ex-Saturday Night Live), Susan Kellerman, Maria Duval and Michael Richards (in-between Fridays and Seinfeld), and guest starring Barbara Rush. (Of this cast, only Mr. Richards would play his role here on the subsequent Marblehead Manor series.) Also appearing were Tony Torres, Paul Eiding and Ellen Crawford.
    Includes:
Station ID / promo for Channel 5 News at 10pm with Max Robinson (yes, THE Max Robinson, late of ABC's World News Tonight)
    Show opening titles and sequence
    Commercials for:
Advil - "Advanced Medicine for Pain"
    Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner
    Pilot Act I
Show bumper (with Channel 5 lower-third logo below)
    Commercials for:
Tide laundry detergent - "Tide won't quit"
Promo for NBC Nightly News - with John Palmer
Promos for Knight Rider and Wait 'Til Your Mother Gets Home
    Pilot Act II
    Commercials for:
Procter & Gamble (with offer on Olympic clothing, merchandise and various products as in this week's issue of Woman's Day - expires September 15th)
    Mint Fresh Signal mouthwash
Ending credits, with voiceover promos for St. Elsewhere and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (by Bill Wendell) and Today (by Bryant Gumbel)
Promo for "The Private Eyes" for Friday (voiceover by Gary Owens)
NBC News Digest with Connie Chung (opening voiceover by Fred Facey), with items:
    - Hijackers of Air France jet in Tehran threaten to kill all passengers unless Paris government frees five prisoners
    - Israeli leaders meet but fail to form unity government
    - Dow Jones rises 19.33
    - British Foreign Secretary Sir Geoffrey Howe assures on Hong Kong that China will keep its capitalist lifestyle for 50 years upon taking over in next century
    Commercials for:
Dominick's Finer Foods - sale on RC Colas (through August 8th) (voiceover by Lloyd Hanson)
    Wendy's all-night Pick Up Window
Like Cola from 7up - with Tim Conway (one of the co-stars of "The Private Eyes") - "99% Caffeine Free" - "The 7UP of colas."
Station ID / promo for Channel 5 News with Ron Magers (recording cut off early but it's something about the Chicago Fire Department)
This aired on local Chicago TV on Wednesday, August 1st 1984 during the 8:30pm to 9:00pm timeframe.

This show took too much from Benson, it's no wonder it didn't get picked up. I love these unsold pilots with original commercials. It is the only time machine we have.

Yes, this pilot was later reworked into the 1987-'88 syndicated series "MARBLEHEAD MANOR", with Michael Richards the only returning cast member returning (as "Rick"). It lasted 24 episodes.

That's why this show's theme song sounded so familiar! I was wondering why I remembered the theme from a pilot that didn't go anywhere that came on when I was 5; I do remember watching Marblehead Manor, though.

  • @kengeorgejones6855

Thanks. I enjoyed that more than I expected - Derek McGrath manages to make his pseudo Sam Malone role palatable, and most of the others (especially Michael Richards and Garrett Morris) are fine. Only poor Susan Kellerman really suffers, due to the cod Eliza Doolittle accent and too many tired, crass sex jokes. I wish they'd given this cast more of a shot rather than revamping.

I was thinking how surprisingly enjoyable this is. I was expecting something completely ridiculous and a complete time-waster. There are some genuinely laugh-out-loud jokes going on here. Usually, with a pilot, you find yourself struggling to get into the characters of the show, but I really like these people. It really is weird the things that make it onto a network's schedule and the things that don't. This one should have been picked up and given time to grow.
