    With any riding mower, it is mandatory that all of the unit be blown off with an air compressor after every use unless you want a myriad of problems. After running park departments for over 40 years, I can assure you that this is a fundamental maintenance routine that is quite necessary.

    • @PMPerformance
      @PMPerformance  Год назад

      Mandatory and necessary, are a little harsh.
      It is advised though if you want your deck to last forever though.
      What are the miriad of problems or their than deck rot?
      I got this thing in early 2017 and I can’t say I take all that great of care of it and it’s been holding up great as far as I can tell. I scrape the inside of the deck once or twice a year.

    Very informative video and enjoyed watching. I ordered my Cub Cadet a couple of days ago from Tractor Supply. I’m 62, have major back problems and have been using a push mower for my 3/4 acres which takes me 2-3 days to cut and then I’m down 3-4 days. I’m looking forward to my CC getting here soon!

    Thanks for the great review. I just bought the XT1 Intellipower riding mower. Hoping it lasts. Putting my 14 year old Troy Bilt in the nursing home just in case i need it. FALL CLEANUP SUGGESTION: You made the comment about how often you have to change the bag when picking up leaves in the fall. I mulch my entire yard first and then bag. It works so wonderfully. The mulcher chops leaves up to about a 15 to 1 ratio. My yard is covered in leaves in the fall about 4x and this makes it so much faster and easier. Thanks again. Joe

    Really good comparison. Thanks! I just switched from a 2006 MTD Bolens to a John Deere D110 for my .75 acres. Everything you said about the Cub Cadet deck was what I experienced with my Bolens. It served me well for a long time, but the open deck was always something I had to keep my eye on and the spindles required a lot of in-season maintenance, especially with leaves. And you’re right about the ergonomics. MTD’s common design with all of the mower controls together is great and makes coordination easy, especially on hills. I definitely have to think ahead and anticipate more with the Deere. I’m sure I’ll get used to it, but it’s been an adjustment.

    Nice video! I have the same Cub Cadet. I ordered it through Tractor Supply Company and shipped directly to my house. I haven't any issues with the scalping wheels and I mulch. I don't get nearly as much clippings as you do but I use compressed air to clean it after every use. I also use it year round for snow plowing. I found if I leave the mowing deck in place the added mid weight helps the steering get a better grip. Tire chains are a must and I add a milk crate filled with granite rocks mounted to the hitch area. I agree that gas sight is terrible, I simply lift up the hood and look at the tank. Best regards, Jay

      Thanks for watching. Did you add zip ties to the mulch plug to keep it in place? I have been mulching lately and it hasn’t been as bad, but the grass isn’t as thick either this time of year

      @@PMPerformance I replaced the plug and formed a new one made of rigid insulation then wrapped the entire plug with 2 layers of duct tape. The duct tape prevents rocks from destroying the plug and I slightly oversize it so I can push it in tight to the opening. For added security I run a small bungee cord hooked onto the front and back anti scalping wheel mounts. But the last few times the lawn was too wet for mulching, leaves and grass tend to clump up. I put the chute back on and drive in a direction that shoots the grass & leaves into the woods.

    Great Video. Owning and using same model CC. Here are my negative experiences and observations: Agree with gas gauge, sometimes unable to see fuel level have to open cowl easier to see in tank under cowl. Agree with reverse issue, it is weak and as understand it, it is a common problem. After using hydrostatic vs shuttle, I prefer the shuttle, it is a more positive engagement. The deck PTO cable connection can be a pain to disconnect or connect. Have had belt issues with mine. Properly replacing insuring all pullies are tight, in place and all guides are proper but still have belt jumps off from time to time with no apparent reason (I even slow engine down to a low speed to engage or disengage PTO). I find a good turning radius but one of the worse situation on mine , it is a very hard steerer, it has been from day one. Yes regarding the mulcher cover/plug poorly fits, I have a network of bungies to help it. I am planning to purchase a new mower soon, I dont know if it is going to be another Cub Cadet, I am at 50/50 at best. My best, thank you//DougC

    I purchased a 2016 CC XT2 LX42 KH in May 2017 which is similar to CC in video, mow 2-acres. My mower deck & reverse mechanism never looks filthy like in video [air compressor & 4-minutes; Reverse works perfect]. XT2 currently has 325-hours (8th season) and has original spindles and mower deck wheels. I mow areas with bumps/dips and my PTO lever has never jumped out of position. I’ve never had any problem checking fuel level with the sight gauge that is viewable from the seat.

    Since the gas tank is in the front it doesn't have or need a fuel pump. Less to break. I have a 2019 XT1 I bought new in 2020 with the Kohler 5400 18 horse engine. It is a single cylinder bucket motor but they have addressed the engineering problem of the case cracking on the right side where it meets the cylinder. That was a real problem with the Courage motor. Just make sure to check the torque on the 8 top case bolts at the beginning of every mowing season. They have a tendency to loosen sometimes. I don't know if its an issue on the 5400 engine but I check it anyway. The 2020 mowers have a Cub Cadet or J Deere brand motor. They are actually made in China. That's why I went with the Kohler motor. They may be ok, but I'm not a real fan of generic Chinese motors. MTD owns Cub Cadet, John Deere, Craftsman, and other mower manufacturers. They all use Tuff Torq transmissions but there are several different ones. The one on the XT1 is one of their bottom of the line transmission. Cub Cadet won't work on it and consider it an expendable item. About $700. They can be rebuilt. The most common failure is the axle seal leaking and running out of transmission oil. You can change those seals and add more oil to the transmission. Tuff Torq has all the parts for it if needed, including a complete rebuild kit. If you go to the Taryl Fixes All videos he has one that walks you through a complete rebuild, and another video where you can install a drain plug kit so you can change your fluid in the transmission. JD probably uses this transmission as well. It's a good unit, that is a little weak in reverse. All in all I'm real happy with my mower. It's been very reliable. I'm in my second mowing season with it, and it has about 32 hours on it right now. I take care of my stuff, so it will be properly maintained and I expect to get 10 years or more out of it.

    I like my XT1 42 Enduro. I have the 5400 18 engine and it's great. The only issue I have so far is it kept blowing fuses. After about the 4th fuse change, the right headlight went up in smoke. Unplugged the headlights and it ran fine. The warrantee turned out to be more trouble than it was worth since I had to go thru a box store that sold tractor supplies. I mounted a cheap LED light bar on the front with a switch and it's fine. I do mow at night at times.

I planned on putting the second one on the rear but found I don't really need it. Yet.

    I've the 2013 cub cadet ltx1040, which is the older version of your cub. It's all the same except it's got the cvt transmission that your friends john deere has. My deck has held up,my motor has held up,and my transmission is still dandy. It only has a few scrapes on the plastic and some of the stickers have come off. My only sources of disappointment is the pto engagement handle bent over years of use and even after replacement it's not that great, so I guess I need a new cable too. The quality of cut is pretty good,but the opening for the deck chute is much smaller than on a similar john deere and it's not designed with airflow in mind. I just mow slower so it has a better chance at cutting all the grass and dispersing it. I would consider buying another cub cadet,but mostly because of the price difference between it and john deere. I will say that if I buy another mower it will have to have a hydrostatic transmission and electric pto. A new john deere s130 has both of those things and only costs a couple hundred dollars more than this cub cadet,so john deere is a nice option.

    @mikefruge8589 3 года назад +6

    Great review, thank you for sharing. I have a John Deere LA115. It was my Dad's. He kept it in an enclosed shop the entire time he had it. I have the mower now. It ran great for most of last season then it started giving me problems. I have tried just about everything i can think of to get it running as it should but have yet to figure it out. About the only thing left is to check the timing which will require my pulling the flywheel. I have yet to do that. Meanwhile, I needed a mower to keep up with my yard so I went and purchased the Cub Cadet XT1 LT 46. As far as I can see, the XT1 42 and 46 share everything but the mower deck and the engine. The mower decks appear identical except for dimensions. So why did I choose the CC over the JD this time? As I was trouble shooting the engine problem on the JD, the fuel system was one of my first areas to inspect. I wanted to completely remove the fuel tank to clean it. That's when I discovered the disadvantage to it's location under the seat. In order to remove the tank you must disassemble much of the mower. The entire metal fender housing has to be removed. If I remember correctly, the videos I watched required the battery and battery compartment to come out, The housing around the steering column had to be removed. The steering column had to be partially removed. In other words it was a job I chose not to do. Instead I blew out the lines forward and backwards. I pressure checked the tank and decided I would not buy another mower with that configuration. There was another problem I had with the JD. Shortly after inherited it I was surprised to see the paint on the metal fender cowling was blistered over a large area. Then I noticed the paint started pealing away from the edge of the cowling. As I said earlier, this mower had always been kept inside and was always put away clean. I ran my finger along the edge of the cowling. I discovered the edge was not rolled. The edge was limited to gauge of the metal used. Not a very substantial surface for which the paint to adhere. So now I have JD mower that is in serious need of a new paint job. While I was shopping I found that many of the new JD's are still made this way. I checked the CC and was pleased to find the cowling edge was rolled the entire perimeter of the cowling. I investigated further on Facebook Market Place and found many JD's that looked like mine. By contrast the older CC's did not seem to have this issue. As this video shows, the CC gas tank is located in the engine bay and the battery is located under the seat. The advantage to the forward gas tank is that is far more accessible as well as all of the fuel line. As for the battery location. I have always been told that heat will kill a battery, therefore I think getting the battery away from the engine is another advantage.
    In regards to the mower decks of the JD vs CC. I agree that the JD looks more finished. The JD grease zerks are a definite plus. However, there may be a reason for the open exposed spindles of the CC. After mowing my lawn with both of these mowers I have seen a very obvious difference in the mower deck performance. I noticed that the CC did a much better job of disbursing the clippings. Even though my yard was several weeks overdue the first mowing with the CC left no rows of grass clippings to go over......None! I have never owned a mower that did this so well. The JD always required my going back over areas where the clippings had accumulated. I think the high lift design of the CC deck prevents the spindles from being enclosed. When you look at the deck of these CC's you will notice large openings around the spindles. These openings allow for the discharge of a high volume of air which creates greater lift and better discharge. The reason we see so much material on the deck of this CC in the video is because along with the air grass clippings are also being discharged around the spindles. If having a better, more efficient cut is the result then I will gladly accept the open spindle design.
    I'm sorry my comment was so long, but I hope this information will help some of you in making your decision.

      I agree with you about the CC deck. Also, I have seen a few decks that have grease zerts and sealed bearings, which makes the zerts useless and maybe just a cheap selling point. My old Snapper was one of them.
      Edit: The gas tank under the seat requires a fuel pump that runs off engine crank case air pressure. The CC with the tank where it is is gravity fed and no pump needed. One less part to fail.

    the whining of the hydrostatic transmission you mentioned and weakness might be that its low on hydraulic fluid. the sound is because of air bubbles going thru the pump , which lowers the pressure and lowers the rpms, fluid needs to be checked every year, filter could restrict flow as well , changing that is a good thing periodically to. just an opinion.

    I bought this mower last year (2020) and planned on it serving me for several years. I was proud of my new mower! I changed the oil and filter at 4.8 hours and used it most of last summer. It sat in my carport during the winter. I changed the oil and filter again at 11.1 hours before using it this spring. I had been using it approximately 15 - 20 minutes when I heard a loud bang and it stopped immediately. I took it to an authorized service center and after contacting MTD (Cub Cadet Corporate) they will not cover the warranty and fix my almost brand new mower! I talked to corporate and asked them what I could have done to prevent this, and their answer was they wished they could tell me, but they are not going to fix my mower. I will never buy another Cub Cadet product, nor recommend to anyone I know! Through no fault of my own, this mower turned out to be highly defective, and Cub Cadet is being penny wise and dollar foolish!

Our Craftsman mower just yesterday died after almost 18 years of great service, of course with normal maintenance and some necessary replacement parts after years of hard work...we are sorry to put it to rest. Your video showed us how the Cub Cadet is very similar in features to our old Craftsman which should make it an easier transition to a new mower. We are in our 70's so this makes the Cub Cadet more attractive to us. Your video was very thorough and super informative in comparing these two mowers. "The good, the bad and the ugly"...so to speak. Now we should be able to make an informed decision. Thanks ever so much!!!
