  • These new gloves use haptic learning to teach your brain piano while you are doing other things. They can also help people with injuries regain functionality, and even help blind people read Braille. They're the brainchild of wearable technology pioneer Thad Starner (the inventor of Google Glass) and researcher Caitlyn Seim, along with their colleagues at Georgia Tech. Can you think of other things they could be used for? Let us know in the comments and remember to share and subscribe for more videos from the frontiers of innovation!

Bro that’s not right. I’ve been spending my whole life learning to be a musician and now you think you can just magically learn how to do that in just several hours. It takes a lot more than just putting a glove on. Being a musician is not memorizing notes it is a theory and an exact science. You have to be able to understand the way it works not use a machine to make your brain memorize the rhythmic pattern, you have to understand the theory behind why those notes are played together as a melody or the “key” of the riff or lick you are playing.

I understand that via muscle memory you could almost subconsciously do tasks, we do it every day, but to actually use vibrations to force neural cognition in the brain is truly remarkable. What other applications could this have? Is there a way to apply this method of forced learning into non physical territory. I have so many questions I'm freaking out.

There’s a man out there, His name is Tom Brier. He was a piano ragtime LEGEND and a few years ago, He was in a brutal and almost fatal car accident. However, He suffered brain damage, and lost his ability to play. Off the top of my head, I do believe he is doing okay, But the doctors said there is a very good chance that he’ll never be able to play the piano ever again, and since the accident has not been able to. If he were to use this glove, I believe his ability to play would come back and Tom could be the legend he used to be. I think it would make him and his family happy, As well as making the people who watched his content happy as well.

we only teach a small bit of it in our normal studies as each session is normally 20min long. Each section of passive learning is about 17 keys , and a typical chord would count for 3 keys. Thus, for the short sections we do for our lab studies, you only get the first few stanzas. At some point I want to have people wear the piano gloves all day to learn longer pieces, but our focus right now for all day wear is the stroke rehab.

The gloves in the video are produced by Caitlyn Seim at Georgia Tech (who appears in the video). Her website is at www.cc.gatech.edu/~cseim6/Research.html and they're periodically looking for research participants if you're in the area.
There are also some similar products:
The Rapael Smart Glove is commercially available -
      www.neofect.com/en/product/rapael/
Morgan IAT is doing research on a new glove -
      morgan-iat.co.uk/project/haptics/
There's more out there as well, but hopefully this helps! If you'd like to do more research, try searching for "haptic rehabilitation glove."

I’ve spent 5 years teaching myself to play the guitar and now your telling me that people can do these things effortlessly. I get using the glove to cure whatever maybe wrong with your hand. But using it to play piano or whatever instrument is not necessary, and that if you want to be a musician you should have to put in the work and time, not be able to pay for the skill. For example, many musicians everywhere devote their whole life to learning the piano or guitar etc. I think if used for the right purpose it is a great tool.👍

Seems like your envious that this tech helps people learn enjoyable things much quicker, like plating music, which took you a loooong ass time haha..it doesn't matter how quick a person learns, using tech or not to expedite the process, what matters is that THEY HAVE LEARNED, and this tech will never be selectively used for the 'right purpose' you hateful twat, it will be used for every single applicable benefit

instead of a glove or in addition to a glove for stroke victims, perhaps they could use a stimulation cap that would work on cortical humunculi to target multiple physical areas and activities.
i am very interested in the braille glove as i went blind a year ago and had to have major surgery to repair my vision. but eventually i will prob go blind again. so i need to be prepared as much as possible.
