As someone who has been completely fucking tired of Trump impressions since early 2017, this was goddamn genius.
It was subtle that's what made it more convincing. He didn't go over the top like so many Trump impressionists.
I almost disliked this on principal i'm so fucking tired of Trump shit but this was gold.
Its good because its comedy before impression. Make a joke then act it, SNL does the opposite, they decide a narrative and character and then try to apply an impression to it.

It's the mannerisms in his mouth that nail the impression. Several million people have an impression that sounds like Trump, but he actually mirrors the movements. You can't keep Gilly down; he's just too damn good.

If SNL started producing taped skits, they'd still be worse than G&K. You can't be effective a comedy while being determined to be PC and mainstream.

He would've made some coin, for sure, but I kind of think he'll garner more fame and recognition this way. I had never heard of Gillis until his firing. As soon as I heard SNL fired a new guy for A JOKE, I knew I had to find his stuff. If Shane were on with the current cast, 1) he couldn't singlehandedly make the show watchable 2) he probably wouldn't get much air time 3) he probably wouldn't get the exposure to the type of fan that likes him. I think this is one of those times that a door closed, but the path opened for him was better.
