Damn. Homie was physically crushing BUD/S, putting in the grind....but then he spoke to some folks who quit, and succumbed that mental pressure. That's so wild and sad.
Sometimes you just have to drop off the face of the earth to start your own journey. There's too much noise and people out there that will grab at your ankles to steer you off your own lane.
Outstanding segment. I'm glad Noah landed an awesome gig in the fleet. He could have been chipping paint, but rescue diver is pretty bad ass in itself. I'm glad we still have young guys still willing to put it all on the line. Semper Fi.
Many kids today don't know how to suffer and embrace the suck. Noah said it best "They don't owe you anything." You have to earn everything you get, a little luck doesn't hurt. Grit is an intangible trait, you earn grit through adversity and going through hard things and it isn't something that can be faked. Hard times make hard men, success surrounds themselves with success and rejects the notion of failure.
We learn from our failures. This is the essence of BUD/S and SEAL training yet done to the extreme. As you've shown us, Jake, the instructors will beat you down, you will fail but does a man have the gumption to push through the failures and keep going? This young man was facing more of a maturity issue and lost his focus. Whether he gets another shot or not, he should take the lesson learn and let it assist him with his life going forward. He learned a lot about mental toughness he can take from this. Class young man.
Jake don’t say you’re an old person Sir! I’m 59 and aside from my 26 years still on the mat, still on the pull-up bars, I was listening to this episode while skateboarding at my local park!
Totally think so too. He's got the proper mindset now. Look at Class 234, it took Rivera three times to get thru. I don't think you can go thru more than twice now though.
He's a nice kid, he doesn't seem like a killer tbh ...but there will be a good job for him somewhere/he has a good one already, in fact its probably perfect for him he's still got time to mature and tbh saving people as a SAR swimmer is probably ideal for his personality.
@@jorges2112 We’re in peacetime so maybe you might be right, highly doubt it though. I’m sure the teams guys at least have something in them most don’t. Yea you got other aspects to it like surveillance, search and rescue, but c mon. This is military. IMHO no one is qualified to do this right out of HS. Go Infantry or Armor, do that for 2 years. Get that experience and that context. You are going to learn about yourself, know your limits, know your mental. Then you'll know if you're ready for SEALS.
I was in Zweigs class (217) then rolled back to 218 and probably in the top 10% physically, however like they say, buds is mental and that El Niño 98’ cold got me. Probably biggest regret but good times
Absolutely right, surround yourself with like minded people only! Dont listen to those who moved on and didnt commit! Ignore that noise, persevere, drive forward, front sight, trigger squeeze!
I feel like it’s a mind game. For sure you need that grit and fitness but I’m thinking I would have hustled in the traditional term of playing as if you’re weaker than you are. This is assuming I’m physically fit enough to be an actual Seal. I might play as if I’m having a real problem in an area I’m fine with. Let the instructor pound me, make it look like I’m about to quit. Lay it on thick and pull through to where everyone is impressed I didn’t ring out. Somehow make the instructors like you at the same time and actually have a hard core attitude. It just seems like an instructor could easily push out someone worthy due to them pushing you harder than others. It seems like if they want you out, they will push you out.

My life has not been a super hard struggle, but I’ve been through a lot, many hard workouts and mentally I feel I’ve built a callus. I can tolerate a lot and push through a lot. Spent some time at the Military Marine Academy in Harlingen Tx. My HS football team was pretty good for our size, and I’d say my workouts there were harder than most schools. Been on some serious bike rides, against the wind, legs burning, walked/ran many miles, strength good through moving jobs. Haven’t really hit the weights like I was doing in HS but I’ve maintained my strength and probably got stronger in different areas. I don’t have the money for how I want to eat. Slim. So I don’t lift much weights cuz I see it as burning a lot of calories. Great calisthenics. I can swim, want to be a lot better though. Hopefully I get in. Want it badly.
