    Euro NCAP performs a series of crash tests on each model tested:
    - a frontal impact test, the car impacts a rigid barrier
    - an offset frontal impact test, 40% of the width of the car is striking a deformable barrier
    - a pole test, the tested car is propelled sideways into a rigid pole
    - a side impact test, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door
    A series of pedestrian tests are conducted with different impactors, adult and child head form, lower and upper leg form and whiplash tests are performed on a sled.
    Active safety is tested based on the car’s equipment: autonomous emergency braking systems (car to car, with a pedestrian and a cyclist target), lane support and speed assist technologies and seatbelt reminders.

    Yes, it's a well built car, and many other cars are the same these days
    But lets be logical here, 50 km/h and 60 km/h is so slow for a street/real situations
    It's almost the double whn it comes to the ability of the roads and cars of these days.
    I mean, most of the cars today are able to reach 100 km/h (62 MPH) and its a very easy thing to do (normal thing)
    So wouldn't be more realistic to raise the speed of the crash tests to 100 km/h at least
    Even though you can do more with ease

    • @Repa24
      @Repa24 5 лет назад +18

      It's because drivers brake before the impact. So they slow down from 100 to 60 because they've that noticed something went wrong and then the impact occurs.

    • @ab33203
      @ab33203 5 лет назад +13

      @@Repa24
      Well, you got a point there, but it will be interesting to see how the cars these days will perform in that situation, doesn't?!

    • @eltontv6002
      @eltontv6002 5 лет назад +4

      i think they do it because most crashes happen in around that speeds. and propably because the car will perform at 100 the same than it did on 50. if it performs poorly already on 50 you dont have to test it with 100 and the other way around too

      Stewart Tod sure. It may case that the driver would fell out of the car and when other damages occurred after the first something may protrude to the cabin and cause injuries.
      Ford Explorer from 90s had similar problems but only with front crashes and due to that it had lowered score.

      That's why you wear a seat belt, even in front crash test if you don't wear a seat belt you will be thrown out of the car from windshield, so impact on anyside doesn't matter if you don't wear seat belts, so the side impact and door open is not a problem it's actually a good thing so it's easy to come out after crash than the door getting jammed in crash.

    • @MaximilianvonPinneberg
      @MaximilianvonPinneberg 5 лет назад +7

      It's a safety feature for pedestrians to cushion the impact.

    • @racionator2668
      @racionator2668 4 года назад

      ActiveBonnet is the name of the feature. It has tubes in front bumper filled with some fluid. When you hit something fluid is not compressable so it raises the pressure in the sensor.
      This is use to prevent backbone breakage when hitting pedestrians and has proven to be really usefull
      The only con is the amount of pain thats required to get the front bumper back properly after removal in order to prevent Active Bonnet Control Inoperative message.
      To reset the bonet after the activation just open it and press on relese tabs on the internal side of the bonnet latches.
      Quite a good feature

    At front offset test also side airbags deployed, but with full frontal test only front airbags, what is logic?

    • @FirstLast-kb7kn
      @FirstLast-kb7kn 5 лет назад +2

      That is because the offset crash involved sideways motion. That puts the driver's head at risk of injury from hard contacts such as the door pillar. In a full-width crash, the movement is forward then backward. Having airbags deploy unnecessarily could contribute to an injury, and they are not really needed in a full-width crash. As I mentioned earlier, the side airbags help mitigate injuries when the vehicle begins to slide sideways.

    Volvo for life
    1:41 compared to the volvo v40 test (at 2:00), the v40 was at a 90 degree angle to the crash pole and the mecedes class-A is already more on the side ruclips.net/video/PivsJODHeks/видео.html without counting on the impact of pedestrians, Mercedes has a tougher bumper, and all other tests the V40 is better.
    Between these two tests, you can see that the criteria are not the same, and that some brands benefit from this.
    A tragic accident in northern Belgium between a recent Porsche and a Volvo v40. The driver of the Volvo, a woman who escaped unscathed from the accident. Unfortunately the passenger of the Prosche died.
    The Porsche was completely destroyed and the Volvo v40 only got the front destroyed.

      Looks to be an oblique crash you showed. that type of crash is not equal for both cars because they have to manage crash energy in different ways. The Porsche there got hit almost side so almost no crumple zone was able to give protection to the passenger. In the volvo however like 75 percent of the crumple zone was engaged, providing adequate protection. Also I don't understand how brands benefit from this criteria difference.

    The door opened during the side impact test and it is not clearly highlighted in the official results as it should be!!! ( please look on the official site at the photo post test)
    euroncap.newsmarket.com/find-a-car/mercedes-benz-a-class---euro-ncap-results-2018/s/adcb3136-4089-4987-8d22-8c48f4f1a851
    Big safety issue. I guess Mercedes fixed the problem and this is why the rating applies only from the cars from this VIN number: WDD1770031J054450.
    Anyway: EuroNCAP surely went easy on Mercedes specifying that: "Maximum points were scored in the side barrier impact, with good
    protection of all body areas". Normally the car should receive an 1 point demerit if the door opens.( and then the performance of 96% will become 93% - quite low for a brand car like Mercedes... )
    In my opinion this should have been clearly highlighted so that every consumer can understand.

    One of the few cars who's looks are improved by a crash. Did they accidentally approve the head designer's child's drawing of an old Daewoo?

      I know, the new A class and CLS look absolutely hideous, but i hear that is gonna be their new design language across models. YUCK 😖

    Modern cars turn to shit when they impact something.

      vsboy 25 indeed. That's kind of the point. Older cars held up physically... Because they didn't have energy absorbing structures. Quite often, the passengers' insides turn to jelly in older cars. Modern cars have various parts that are designed to collapse in order to absorb energy. A car can be replaced. The occupants cannot. For an eye opener, take a look at the (US) IIHS 50th anniversary celebration. They took a car from 1959, the year they got started, and crashed it head on into a car from 2009. It's a real eye opener.

    I don't like Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz, they're beautiful, but in the inside is ugly and noisy...
