I have a blazer sitting on 32's i got it with 120 000 km got it for 3grand put maybe 8 into it now, including lift tires and upgraded suspension. And it goes where you point it
I think a lot of that is due to tire choice. The Jeep was the only one with a super aggressive off-road tire, the others used an AT instead which would be better all around but worse off pavement
I live in Australia and I owned a 2002 WJ Grand Cherokee Limited for 7 years, everyone laughed at me but I tell you - that SUV had the best 4x4, the coolest sounding engine with power too, it was black with black leather, sunroof, heated/cooled everything and just had so much character. I loved that Jeep and ill forever miss it. They were the best model of Grand Cherokee in my opinion.
Well, the TFL guys are figuring out what most off-roaders already know: Own a low-cost, but well-maintained "beater" 4WD for hardcore 4-wheeling. I've followed that line for years, and had more fun for less cost in some very capable 4WD vehicles.

@@hanksadventures4132 that is great. Ive had mostly 80 to 89 f series and broncos and they all did great offroad. From no lift on 32s to 6in lift on 35s. My favorite was an 85 bronco. The Mazda/Ford going up that rocky hill at 16:55 shows how well Ford’s old twin traction beam front suspension works. Independent suspension but still retains good articulation keeping the tires on the ground.
I have it on my bronco. It dominated the trails last weekend. Rock crawling, stream bed, everything. They’re finicky with alignment but fantastic all around setups.
@@VTOffRoadAdventures they don’t use that anymore but they do still use the twin I-Beam front suspension from the 60’s on the 2WD Super Duties. Like you said they are tricky to align but incredibly strong and durable.
I'm a fan of the S10 Blazers. I have a 98 2 door with 3.73s, G80 locker, and lifted a bit on 31s. Up high enough I can crawl under it and work on it comfortably without a jack. Fully reliable if you address the known problem areas. Not a rock crawler, but also not what it's for. Fits and goes anywhere I ask it to.
It's amazing how they are impressed with older vehicles. With the exception of the jeep these vehicles are the golden years of "modern" vehicles. As old as you can get but still have modern technology like fuel injection etc. I drive nothing but old junk and people are amazed all the time, it blows my mind. It doesn't take much to keep these older vehicles going.
My old c class Mercedes is in that era but it's not at all simple 😂 one of few motors with 2 spark plugs per cylinder, all types of computer modules. Obviously the jeep is the superior off-road vehicle, but if I had to take my pick I might take the ranger… er B4000 just for the practicality of a pickup truck. And I like the fact that it has a manual transmission.
That was a fun series to watch with all of the four of you ripping on each other like great family and friends do, plus everyone at a great time for a few bucks less. Wow 😮 what a beautiful 😍 stretch of trail to go through especially the creek crossing scenes.
I absolutely love this series bc I actually go overlanding with a wj and it's got a 4" lift with 33" tires and my dad drives a jk with 40" tires and I'm still able to keep up with him
Haha very nice! I wheel a WJ too, I have yet to attempt an obstacle it hasn't made it up. I have the 4.7 V8, 4" RC suspension lift with extra 2" blocks, 32" Mts, and a winch + bumper, Such reliable and great overlanding platforms!
This series was a lot of fun to watch, and man that trail is BEAUTIFUL. Impressed with all 3 vehicles, though the Jeep takes it easily for me. The Mazda was over-budget and struggled at points, the Blazer performed well but had multiple scares, while the Jeep went through every step of the way just fine. Sure, transmission scare is there, but I’d still feel most confident sitting in it.
Spectacular. I had to rewatch this series just to enjoy it all over again. Whoever edits these videos…there is so much done here which makes this series even that much better. Camera angles and technical operations are flawless, and the music choices are perfectly placed. You’d think this was a several hundred thousand dollar operation for the Discovery Channel. From the people behind the cameras to the ones in the drivers seats, TFL continues to be one of the best on RUclips. In the words of Roman, take a look around you and see what you’ve accomplished. My vote would be the ranger/ Mazda. Because When you buy a Used the vehicle there's always hidden problems that you can never see it sucks but it shouldn't take away from what the truck really was. well frankly if I was going up that pass I would have loved the cargo space and the topper of ranger
I owned a 99 but my had quadradrive and did hells revenge in Moab Utah which is rated a 6 with just 2" lift and Goodyear MTR's so I knew before they even started it was going to win on this easy trail.
I have been proving this for a while to my friends with new fancy (expensive) rigs. I have a total including vehicle purchase cost of $8000 in my 04 WJ. That money bought me a rear locker, front TruTrac, 3" long arm lift, gearing, lights, some engine work, etc. I do all my own work so the labor costs were nill. I now have a nice, comfortable, very capable rig. I rebuilt the 4.7 using newer parts from a '12 Ram, those are rated at 310hp, makes my old 04 get up and jump. Seems for less than 10K I have a rig that outperforms my friends new Rubicons for one simple reason... They will not take their $500 a month rig where it might get scratched or damaged, not to mention the amount of time spent in at the dealer fixing minor glitches. Minor stuff like the entire transfer case being replaced, steering box replaced, transmission replaced, electrical gremlins, etc. Had to add, those groaning brakes on the WJ, lol. Mine quieted down completely using semi metallic pads, cheaper AutoZone pads make the noise.
One of the best offroading vehicles I have had was a Toyota tercel with 15 inch civic rims and tires. Enough ground clearance for pretty much any non rock crawler off roading and I could run 8hrs in the country on 10 bucks in gas it was great.
Thanks for this series. I was expecting something like this for a long time, and you nailed it. Hope to see what you're capable of with less money really soon.

Great video quality what a beautiful area! Y'all need to do around a 7k budget, each pick a vehicle and build it in the way you best see fit to come on over here to the Rubicon! Come on sponsors!! 😉💚
Looks like you boys were a bit chilly up on the summit! Maybe supplemental oxygen on the next trip would be helpful as well. Nathan made a comment about a lack of air which can lead to hypoxia. We wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to you guys. Keep up the good work! That was fun to watch.
Can I have some more, please! This video series was absolutely amazing. A great road trip from start to finish. Super interesting, super funny, super entertaining. A big movie theater. Really enjoyed watching you guys. Thanks for that guys.
Alright whomever is on videography is absolutely killing it! The shots of the canyon and the shots of the trucks rolling together down it absolutely outstanding! Keep up the good work guys!
Been watching your stuff for years and I don’t know how but I missed this series when it debuted. I’m partial to Nathans rig because I had a 99’ ZR2 pickup with a 4.3 and that truck was tough. Good job on videography MORE like this please👍🏼🇺🇸✌🏼
Hands down the mazda is better off road. Did better the whole way up the trails. The blazer shut off during the trip and could barely make the climb. Jeep was middle of the group. Simple
Absolutely great series. Keep em coming guys. Just an Idea, do one with a low budget to get vehicles that need a bunch of work to run or be road worthy, then a budget for fixing and modding. Then do a trail with a lot more mud. get sponsored from a winch company so everyone gets a winch. carry lots of tools and tow/winch gear, gas, food, camp gear, and do a longer video series adventure. More back up vehicles to. Just some ideas.
Also, I'd love to hear their comments about whether they would feel confident jumping in these vehicles on any given Friday afternoon and driving 2-300 miles into the mountains for camping/wheeling, and would your wife go with you?🤣
This is a fun series guys nice work! Jeep WJ is the best of these three hands down all day every day. Simplest to fix, most comfortable/spacious interior, best off road even without lockers.
Thats because tommy knows how to drive and the other guys not so much. Sending it while off-roading is exactly how you break/damage something. Momentum should be the last option when trying to overcome an obstacle.
@@canyonero2050 Your missing the point those other two trucks held up better with the abuse they took. you're acting like this was supposed to be a technical school on driving offroad
@@wiks101 actually i think your missing the point. Using momentum as your man tool for overcoming an obstacle isn't telling us much about these trucks. It would of been better to see them try to crawl up the obstacles at lower speeds first. This would of given us a better representation of what these cheaper vehicles are capable of on there own power and ability. That is actually telling you something about the ability of the vehicle. If at that point the vehicle isnt capable enough to crawl it then by all means go ahead and send it and see how it does. Tommy showed that his Jeep was capable of crawling those obstacles all on its own without having to take the risk of blowing his already shotty transmission or bouncing onto a rock and breaking something. I really dont think the "point" of this series was to see if they could or could not break a vehicle by testing out their "sending" limits. Of course in all reality the ACTUAL point of this video was to produce a commercial for thier sponsor, BFgoodrich. Ps-that chevy blazer absolutely broke/damaged something by sending it to hard up that hill. At the end he even admits it was his fault for having to heavy foot on the gas pedal.
@@canyonero2050 no the point was " sending it every-time " is what made these videos cool and fun to watch - slow crawling 25 year old pieces of shit that no one would trust to go up alone into the mountains without a support crew and a trailer (TRX) does not make for good content
People use momentum up hills either out of desperation or like you said, for entertainment. In reality its too risky to take chances like that in your daily driver that has to make it to work the next day. Thats the scenario most of us relate too. Holds true for shit boxes and fully loaded Rubicons. Sounds like you'd rather cater these videos to people with disposable incomes which goes completely against the whole point of the video. If those trucks had broken they would have felt real stupid for pushing it when a little less could have kept them in the video, was a big gamble.
Just remember that no matter how expensive a ride you take on the trail you have to get it off the trail too! This is where it pays to have friends and basic mechanical skills.

Yes, title of this episode is the correct title to tell people to enjoy 4W with a very low cost.... Thank you.
beautiful scenery, great camera work, loved this mini series! Good humor, and interesting challenges, TFL, keep it up!
keep doing more videos with this trucks intill they brake down and very good work keep it up
I would argue that it’s more fun to wheel a vehicle that you don’t care as much about and can beat on a bit more than an expensive ride.
Telluride is absolutely stunning. A place everyone should go at least once in their lifetime
Props to the camera crew! This is an absolutely beautiful video despite the homely cast members. 😂🙏🍀
Unnecessary
Moe, Larry, n Curly? Lol!
Lol
Tommy's the most skillful driver of all these guys and that WJ impresses.
Love these episodes! Looking forward to the $1,000 challenge. Put these trucks/SUV's up for sale on TFL Bids
There's no way in hell they're gonna find any trucks or SUV for $1k I've already checked all over the country and they've all got salvage titles and don't run
@@tati-anaroseee4316 somebody smart might show up on a motorcycle for $1000
Sadly, TFL Bids is history.
For those people that don't have a car or want a starter car, these cars and other cheap sedans are the way to go especially if you are handy. Parts are available and you can take care of point A to point B easily cheap without car payments. You dont need a brand new car if you're well rounded and not stable. However, You cant beat a new car: It will always start, everything usually works, more dependable, safer and worry free including warranty
Great series !! Really enjoyed it 🙂 and looking forward to the next one !
16:53 "the hardest way.. 😐" love it! I would have said the same 🤣🤣
Hey guys,
You really have grandiose landscape on this emogine trail.
Love my 09 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with 196,000 miles. Goes where I want and pulls my boat just great. Very affordable as well.
Love the 20yr old “modern reference”
Haha right
Tommy and his Jeep won this hands down. If I had to choose one of the 3 to make that drive, jeep is the easy choice
Great video quality what a beautiful area!
Y'all need to do around a 7k budget, each pick a vehicle and build it in the way you best see fit to come on over here to the Rubicon! Come on sponsors!!
😉💚
Under buget, best gas mileage and best approach, departure and breakover angles. Blazer wins!
Enjoyed this, beautiful video. Thanks!
@11:14 just wanted to mention the attention to detail with the background music sounding like it’s underwater. Good job editor!
Such an awesome idea for a series! I love these! Great channel
Please continue this type of content. Love the series. made me feel like I was there with you friends. Thanks for your hard work on preparing.
LOL You don't need an oxygen tank at 13,000 feet.
@@01Z06guy well, you don’t necessarily NEED it but it can definitely help
@@alexadamson1322 If you go up the passes in the San Jauns with oxygen, I hope I'm there at the time to get a good laugh.
Can I have some more, please! This video series was absolutely amazing. A great road trip from start to finish. Super interesting, super funny, super entertaining. A big movie theater. Really enjoyed watching you guys. Thanks for that guys.
Heck, the mountain bike in the video cost more than these rigs! Nice work!
I have a 1999 Grand Cherokee WJ, and it's really cool to see Tommy's Jeep in its element.
@@byronlarson5534 my 1999 does not have traction control. It has ABS and that's it.
Alright, "f'in cheap " just can't wait to see what happens. 😲🤑
They pay around a thousand at purchase, then $2-3000 in repairs, probably costing more than any of these three !!
Brilliant and best “auto journalism” series this side of The Grand Tour. A great mix of people, places and ideas 👌
Cant wait for the next episodes with the $1,000 4x4s!!!
3 geo trackers
Alright whomever is on videography is absolutely killing it! The shots of the canyon and the shots of the trucks rolling together down it absolutely outstanding! Keep up the good work guys!
My Dad had the same exact blazer the only thing that killed it was the crusher at over 300,000miles
Technically Nathan was the only one that came under budget all things considered.
As someone who recently picked up a Jeep WJ, I thoroughly enjoyed this series.
10/10 entertainment, can’t wait for a trans America series
I would about bet the Mazda fuel tank is fine and its the filler hose where it goes into the tank common issue on the Ranger and B series .
Hands down the mazda is better off road. Did better the whole way up the trails. The blazer shut off during the trip and could barely make the climb. Jeep was middle of the group. Simple
Looks to me like they all made it to the end so….yeah
Well i have a Chevy so im gonna have to disagree.
Would have loved to have seen an actual price breakdown, including retail for the "free" tires.
They S10 would be the cheapest. he paid less in the first place and the jeep got bigger tires there going to cost more.
The tires are a commodity item really. It’s pretty well known that a decent set of general purpose off road tires will cost between $750-1250USD.
You can add all day long, but it won’t be 1/10th of a modern $60,000 leather lined mall crawler.
4:39 That little scratch, just nailed it.
Nathan and Andre were sending it every-time and I feel Tommy was babying the Jeep.
Would love to see the follow up “how we got home” in the series… something tells me the Blazer would be hurting in the 300 mile return trip
Get your hearing checked if that is what you’re hearing.
That blazer will do whatever you want it to do! Just send it!
