Some of them have been protected since they were used as building material in churches or church interior. Some runestones have been damaged and some better preserved. It has also to do with the typ of stone that was used.

I have a question. How did the Vikings flatten the stone?

There are very few sources from this time period. Historian don't even know why people started to raise runestones in the time period when Sweden went from Norse to Christian religion. But the stones were taken from around the country and they probably had some people working on the stones before carving it. The carving was made by certain masters who probably were celebrities at the time, since they very often put their name on the stone as a trademark.

In Sweden there are about 3000 rune inscriptions. There are runestones in the other nordic countries too, esp in Denmark, but Sweden has the most.

Runestone for a Bridge built 1000 years ago with no water in site, can't deny Climate Change.

Stockholm area rises with 5 millimeter in comparison to sea level, each year. This is because of the ice pressure during ice age. Up nort it is 10 millimeters and in Skåne 0. 1 000 years ago the sea level was about 5 meters higher than today and the Lake of Vallentuna was much bigger.
