    I like how, despite their difference in position and personal disagreements about the mission, it didn't interfere with their friendship. Carl may outrank both of them by a wide margin and is coldly able to make decisions that cost people their lives (including theirs, potentially), but he still respects and supports them, especially Rico who, despite being little more than a frontliner and a workhorse, is one of the federations finest, always frosty and ready for the next mission, hence why Carl was happy to promote him and give him command of the Roughecks, perhaps M.I's most prestigeous platoon.
    One of those rare examples where Carl's rapid ascension to the top ranks and the power he commands didn't go to his head.

      I'd suggest you to hear the director's audio commentary to understand better this film, it has satire and subtle messages in it, unlike what they do these days, it's not preachy with what it does. The source material glorifies the military and it has some fascist views, while this film has a critic about that. See how Rico replied at the end, "I'll take it, till I get killed or you find someone better", he knows what's up.

      In the original novel, it didn’t happen this way, of course. Ace encourages Johnny to apply for officer training, which he does, and finds himself commanding a group of troops in a subsequent battle. Does well. I don’t remember if anyone in the novel receives a field commission, but it scarcely matters; the narrative makes a point that many or most MI officers drop with their troops, whatever their other duties might be.

He does say that if officer candidates are killed in action (on their 'apprentice cruise' where they are tested as officers) they are commissioned in their unit they came from, so they can "send them home." In the book, if Rico (who goes to OCS to be an officer) were to die on his test as an officer, he would be commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant Juan Rico, 2nd "Roughnecks" Platoon," G company, 2nd battalion , 3rd "pampered pets" regiment, 1st "polaris" M.I. In the novel, I don't remember any mention of a private soldier getting a field promotion to lieutenant. Rico in particular doesn't get a promotion to officer without a considerable amount of classroom study and at least one apprentice cruise. Heinlein himself was a career military man until he caught TB, so if field promotions were the norm in this society I think he would have mentioned it. On the other hand, a field promotion is a good way to keep this movie moving along.

    • @florinivan6907
      @florinivan6907 11 месяцев назад +6

      Heinlein only served for a few years during the early 30s.He had no combat experience or even stateside service during war. So he never actually saw the reality of war and how it plays out in real life as opposed to hypothetical classrooms and discussions. The US had tens of thousands of battlefield commissions during WW2. But Heinlein who came through the military academy system in peacetime was influenced by that in his writings. In real life if times are tough the system(any system) will do anything to survive even changing the rulebook. That's the thing the book is the pov of a guy who had the uniform on for a few years then got dumped(you can't tell me he wasn't angry at his discharge that erased a full decade of his life) and watched the real war which started a few years later play out from afar. Heinlein was one of the few military age males of his generation who did not serve in WW2.

    • @akrabis8905
      @akrabis8905 7 месяцев назад +1

      He surely mentioned. Remember how in officer academy one of his fellow officer-in-training was already a captain field-promoted, or maybe even mayor. The important thing is that while nobody would take that from him, his chance to promote to the senior officers are quite slim, without proper education. That's why he went to academy and get demoted.

    I love how tired and worn out Carl looks in this scene. He may come across as a heartless strategist sitting in high command haphazardly ordering the deaths of thousands on a whim, but his angry retort to Carmen to me said he is struggling to cope with tue weight of his actions and lashes out at her in guilt.
    He rationalised it in his mind with the repsonse of 'We're in it for the species' but I think seeing his best friend turning out to be one of the anonymous statistics he deals with when co ordinating the War effort affected him, hence the angry response when his actions were questioned.

    • @Sam-lf3hn

      It's not a satire. In the book, the Terra Federation is a libertarian government that focuses on ensuring that everyone is free to do or say whatever they want so long as it doesn't infringe on the right and liberties of others. So you can't rob or assault someone else.
      The director never read the book and claimed it was a satire or fascism.
      Furthermore, the bugs are marxists/communists on a biological level. So the war is between humanity and the bugs, is figuratively a war between two opposing political philosophies. Lots of people say Starship Troopers Is satire of Fascism. But this here is why it failed to convey that to the audience. The movie makes it plain the bugs are aiming to wipe out humanity, so anything the humans do is justified. “We’re in this for the species” that line right there excuses anything. If the movie wanted to be satire then what was missing was a scene were the bugs reveal the asteroid was an inside job, that the humans started the war.

      Uh I think it's satire either way...clearly of the US.

      Paul Verhoven didn't read the book and what he was trying to do was almost entirely disconnected from the source material. Still, he did such a poor job of satirizing fascism we have to take his word for it that it's what he was going for. An entirely volunteer army fights for the survival of their race as covered by an unbelievably transparent press? His own parents should be ashamed of him, having lived in German occupied Netherlands during WW2.

      It could have been an inside job. Those news we keeps seeing are full of lies, so why would the one about the asteroid by more real than the rest?

      It's a combination of that and total superiority. Humanity in this movie is trying to do the same by colonizing the entire galaxy. The bugs don't have to be in the right or wrong for this movie to demonstrate the nature of military propaganda, political intel set-ups (Klendathu), and tyrannical hierarchies in government forcing people to fight for their government to obtain basic human rights. If the bugs were hinted at being the good guys, we'd have the same narrative as Avatar. This movie hides it well, just like the real world has.

      Paul Verhoeven doesn’t do one dimensional and two dimensional crap.
      Just like Robocop, there is comedy, corporate wasteland, ridiculous police work but also heroism.
      And guess what, that’s how life is.
      There are real people and good values in all systems, even those we label as bad and vice versa.

      It’s literally no different than an at sea burial after a naval battle
