ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY kazuya and heihachi, who are defense based characters. they are backdashing to make you want to approach them where whiff punishing is they're strongsuit. they definitely have reasons to backdash you getting to tekken king without understanding wavedash pressure or whiff punishing as JIN makes me so sad to see the sorry broken state of that character. he used to need skill to pilot. now he's a d2 214 and heatburst heatsmash machine

The goal is to make them afraid or aware of your 50/50 first, then apply a wavedash. If they still hit you, they're a masher.
Kazuya players start with df2, usually because they want to check if the opponent is mashing at the start.
