Alice Achieng' worked in the United Nations for over 19 years and she had set her stage for retirement pretty well including owing a house worth 54 million shillings in Runda. She lost her job after failing to prove a sexual harassment case by against her boss and one year down the line she says she almost everything she had worked for all those years. Her husband passed on after being infected with HIV and AIDS but she thanks God they a were a discordant couple and she was never infected.
She has been sinking in depression with each passing day. She hardly eats, locks up herself in a room crying all night. She has been moving from house to house seventeen times now and has even spent days in her daughter's school hostel. She says she never ever imagined life would be this bitter for her and her children.

While I feel Alice story and wish she is back on her feet soonest, there is a lesson that may not be emphasized in Kenya as it should. "Money is power. Always have 6 months rent/mortgage in cash" . We cannot predict our future and yes we can plan, like Alice did, but instead of 3 cars, 3 plots, have one car, one plot and ready cash. This could have saved some time when she sorts out what next, at least. Lets learn from our mistakes. The other thing is, Alice you kept saying you are alone. You built a beautiful house in shags, go there. You would have had company and food, if not the comfort of the city, then plan your way out. Friends cannot sustain you indefinitely. Ask for specifics "Naomba pesa ya lorry ni peleke virago home". This is more doable than "I have no food and accommodation." Downsizing is real and it sucks, but it is a lesson and temporary. Good luck Alice. You are beautiful inside and out and keep your smile.

I went through the same experienc when I lost a good paying job and I was left with a big deficit. I was lucky cause I was still young and got a low paying job but I managed to get a passport and started going out of the country to buy and sell to supplement my salary. I tell u it worked and I manged to sent my kids to school and renovate my house. This time I was using cash no loans. Today I have a comfortable life coz I quit my job and am doing business to sustain my life. All my children are grown up and have their lives.

First we need volunteer lawyers, then a complaint to the bank. Investigate whether it was lawful to give one weeks notice. Why she was not helped and supported so as she can keep her job. The UN, I hear those guys are on contract, secondly work politics is mentally draining those guys have good lawyers and shove things under the carpet. All I can ask God to forgive you, start right at the bottom and try not to look for jobs. I hate to admit as Om in my 40s organisations are on to young workers. They used to do that during Moi time. The bank managers used to buy those homes for the balance...so many people lost their properties that way..

However, if the former homeowner had any sort of judgment against them, they would also be paid at this step in the process.
Finally, in a mortgage foreclosure, if there are any excess funds left over after the subordinate lien holders have been paid, the former homeowner (or the foreclosed party) is entitled to the surplus money.
We agree, If a foreclosure sale results in excess proceeds, the lender doesn't get to keep that money. The lender is entitled to an amount that's sufficient to pay off the outstanding balance of the loan plus the costs associated with the foreclosure and sale-but no more. A 50m home -4 m=46m, the story simply doesn't add up!!

I have been moved by Alice's story so much so that I remember when I was sacked from the Civil service. My relatives cheered. My enemies derided me, even clapped high fives right before my eyes. I remember Jasper Rugut telling me to return my uniform and stuff. I was so desperate, depressed I couldn't pay my kids fees. I just broke down. One day my mom sold a cow and my children got back to school. The stress was too much that I got stomach ulcers but Dr Moses Njue treated me. I know how much the lady is going through but there is a God in heaven. She will make it.

I sympathize with her. However as a banker, I feel there are missing parts of the story. The banks would not take the step of auctioning any property after 80% of loan amount is paid, leave alone giving you one week to settle the whole balance; unless there was unprecedented defaults of payments in the duration of loan repayment. They would continued holding your title deed and give you another payment plan to settle your balance. Also, they would get to your guarantors' account balances and offset your loan where applicable, then you would settle with the guarantors on your own agreed terms. This is the procedure for financial lending institutions in Kenya as outline in the central Bank act 2018(not just for KCB). Let her get a lawyer and file charges against KCB, if the picture she portrays here is true. Hope justice will prevail. Wish her well.

@@CarolineIsHer yes, pple need to invest in some income generating property when they have the money to build. I think spending 50M on a house, was a bit much. She cld've done so much with that money by building a block of apartments to rent out. But I understand when the money is coming in, and one feels they have job security- its hard to imagine losing it all. I hope others learn from her experience. Otherwise, my heart aches and breaks for Alice. Friends and relatives are overrated. I learned that the hard was also.

That's why it seems like all your doors are shut and even those who are meant to help you don't see you as deserving of help. You are a smart and strong woman. Don't lose hope. KCB breached the terms of the Contract by ordering a one week period for the 4 m to be returned yet they had earlier agreed a 2years period. We can therefore sue the bank for damages they have caused you Mum Alice.
That's my thoughts as well, if she had not defaulted and her two years hadn't lapsed they had no right to auction her house or the same boss had a role in the same just to bring her completely down.
Am also wondering after the house was taken, the bank was to take 4M and the balance was to be given back to Alice. Hapo Kelvin hakuuliza

Yvonne, I see what you mean, but we are humans, and in most cases, security is what humans look for. Not everyone may have the same faith in God. At some point in time, the average person seeks stability and nothing is wrong with that. It is true that the only solid foundation is Jesus, and as we seek stability in life, we should find wisdom to build on Christ. Alice needs much love, encouragement, and , prayers. I believe that this experience will bring her to Christ, and she will rise again from this experience even stronger.
Alice planned appropriately ... then was ripped off by the bank, her lecherous disgusting boss and also the UN. How could she fight all that? Had they not stolen her house, she would have been adequately prepared having worked so long and diligently. As brilliant and dedicated as she was, she could NOT prepare for TREACHERY. No one can. And as for her "friends" who rejoiced at Alice's downfall - perhaps they will find their true "joy" when KARMA hits them or their loved ones.

Sorry for your situation, I can relate very well. I'm an African, I worked as UN Security-P2 for the UNAMIS in Kadugli (South Kordofan) for 2 years and I new the job was not for me even as a man. All the ladies look forward to sleeping with all the available men and get money off them. Men in senior positions want to take all the ladies to bed for free, married women loose their husband back in their countries because they have started tasting other men and can't keep with their husband any longer. Immediately I left, I did HSMP to live and work in the UK. Today, I'm better than most of my mates that I left behind. I retrained and now I am a software engineer with income that's humongous. When your boss made that move, you should have reported a case of sexual harassment before the sack.

First, write a petition to the UN Secretary-General and after she would need the help of an advocacy group to push that narrative to flood the pages of newspapers in her country. Get some NGOs to stage a peaceful protest condemning the act within the UN (carrying of placards only). It's important that you find out if the man is still with the UN before any action from you.

Then I remembered something when I was young, I use to pass people on the way talking to themselves Sometimes I could hear what they say and I will talk to my friends about and we make fun of them. When I got depressed I did remember those people knowing that they were going through depression.

Probably the loan was already overdue and she asked for two years extension but they only gave her two weeks. That's what she's not saying. They could not just reduce. She could have sued them.

Alice...I so feel you. Please let go of anger and bitterness. This story is so similar to my mum's, unfortunately my mum went down into depression and never came up. She passed on like 6 years ago. We her children are yet to recover. You still have a chance to get up and live again. We live we learn. People will always be people. Let go and move on. A mind shift will allow you to see solutions instead of road blocks. Pray. Alot of this is probably spiritual. May God help you. It shall be well 🙏
