Just subbed and liked to support a fellow vlogger and hiker. MST is a bucket list hike for me. Vlogger woes. Something eventually happens to everybody's footage at some point. That was how I saw my 1st bear on the AT. A baby was up a tree, but I never saw mama. But I sure made a lot of noise to make sure mama knew I was there as to not startle her. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Vlogger woes indeed...I've lost footage before for various reasons but this was by far the most I've lost in one swoop. Oh well...we live and we learn right? Thanks for watching and thanks for the sub! Hope you make it out to the MST one of these days!👍👍
Dude, that stinks; really enjoyed the video! Thanks for linking in Mark's channel, that's some good stuff too! (Got to get over to Yellow Mtn now) I'm now starting to like these hiking videos as much as the kayaking ones! Thanks for sharing. Hope y'all have a great trip to the Left Coast.
I wish RUclips would "find" Mark's channel and make him famous...I really love watching his stuff. Glad you're enjoying the videos. Paddling and hiking are my passion so I like to make it enjoyable to watch whenever I can. Thanks for the well wishes and that's for watching!
Segment 4 is definitely going to be a repeat trail segment for me...although next time I'll be a little more gentle with the electronics 😂. Thanks for watching!
I KNOW! My brother was the one that pointed him out and that was about the same time that the cubs saw us. The first one scurried down the tree before I could get the camera on him but when the other one started squawking...that was our cue to head out. No worries on the premiere...I think I'll try to do them more regularly. They've really turned into a great opportunity to catch up with folks. Thanks for watching!
I feel your pain… Lost my phone in segment 2 and honestly I was more disappointed because of the lost footage than the lost device. Woods mountain was the gift that kept on giving. I thought it would never end. I also found myself unable to bring myself to look for the tower after that climb. The true poison ivy hell is in segment 3. There are miles, not exaggerating, where you would be hard pressed to get off the trail for a bathroom trip due to it. Like the poison is the underbrush for as far as you can see. Congratulations on your first bear sighting! I can vividly remember each and every time it’s happened to me. They really are rare. I always felt the urge to leave quickly as well and for good reason. Great job as always on your video and editing!
Ooof...I don't know if I can compare to a lost phone although I know exactly what you mean about being more concerned about the footage. Cameras are replaceable...footage isn't. Segment 3 is next on the radar but just don't know when yet. Maybe I'll save it for a winter hike and hopefully miss the poison ivy fields you describe...no thank you. Thanks for the kind words and I've been enjoying watching your videos on the other channel! Happy trails!
@Side Trail Adventures I think most of segment 3 around Asheville would be OK for a winter hike but Rattlesnake Lodge to Black Mountain Campground would potentially be very challenging in wintry weather. The poison ivy fades out around Rattlesnake Lodge as the elevation goes up. Seems like once you get above 4K feet it fades out and I’m not sure I saw any above 4500 feet. The good thing about the section around Asheville is that it is heavily traveled and the maintenance is pretty good so you don’t have as much green encroaching on the trail as the back side of Woods Mountain which was a maze of stuff leaning over the walking path when I hiked it this summer.
Hey i found yall from my buddy mark who u did this hike with hes one my best friends been watching your mst vids im doing Hampton tn to Davenport gap on the at then 1-5 on the mst starting next week sometime but really been enjoying the videos
Right on! Mark was a blast to hike with...our humor certainly seemed to mesh well😂 Good luck with your hikes...perfect time of year to get out there. Thanks for watching!
I just found your channel and subscribed. Thank you for saying that Woods Mountain was tough. That makes me feel so much better. I would take 100 steps and rest. One hundred more and rest. Etc. That's one tough mountain!
Woods Mountain took me for a ride! It just kinda sneaks up on you and then you're like "holy smokes, where did all of my oxygen go?" Thanks for watching!
Thank you kind sir! It's hard to beat this stretch with scenery...the stretch after this video was my favorite. Just need to get my act together and edit episode 2. Thanks for watching!
Man, that stinks about your SD card! I have found though, that for me, it is easier to keep everything organized if I use a smaller SD card and change it out everyday. I say that like I actually DO that, when in reality I get halfway through the morning and my card fills up right before something epic happens so I don't get it on film. SMH! My biggest obstacle with editing these videos is actually keeping everything organized, but I am refining and getting better at it! Enjoyed the video, Austin. Keep it up, bud!
Yeah, that'll be the last 256GB card I buy...staying organized with data is key. Definitely a learning process but it sure is fun. Thanks for watching my friend!
@@SideTrailAdventures I am still learning. I have videos form over a year ago that I still haven’t edited and that is mainly because I saved all of the data, but I didn’t organize it first. I am thinking that I am finally figuring out how to do that. Maybe. 🤷🏻♂️😂
Austin: I really enjoy your videos and commentary. I'm in Sanford, NC, so if you ever needed a hiking partner, I'd be interested. I was surprised to see you in a tent this time. I thought you were a hammock guy.
Right on! I certainly love my hammock but don't always go places with trees. My brother and I used this trip as a shake down for our John Muir Trail thru-hike so we were figuring out our tent situation. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching!
very cool..............you and Joe should seriously consider starting a business taking paying nubs, after educating them, on these "charters." I'd pay!!!!!
National Geographic maps are the most universal paper maps out there. The one that covers segment 4 is #779 (amzn.to/45SvPjC). Gaia is preferred phone app and has some pretty good maps as well. I like to carry both because the paper map never needs to be recharged😎. Thanks for watching!
He has the grandaddy of all bear canisters...a Bearikade Blazer (www.wild-ideas.net/blazer/). He spared no expense but he's definitely been getting his money's worth out of it!
Looks like a fun trip! Thanks for sharing
It was definitely an adventure...thanks for watching!
@@SideTrailAdventures no problem! We really enjoy making outdoor content also
Props to the trail angel who walked 1.2 miles just to deliver the Blue Moons and cakes! A true savior!

Equipment failure is the worst. Sorry about the footage, but an adventure is an adventure none the less! ❤️🇺🇲🏴

How did you find a topographic map for segment 4
