I've had this problem with my Crown Vic since I got it from the Police. I have to hit the brakes like 3 times before it releases the column shifter. I wasn't even looking for the solution, and boom! you came with it. Happy Thanksgiving!
There's also a fuse (no 16 slot, 25 amp) in the fusebox (under tha dash) for the interlock. I would check that first before proceeding any further. I had that happen to me when piggybacking an add a fuse for a timer relay for my 2011 CVPI.
Judge, thank you Sir ; this way past my DIY skills . Thank you for the heads up on the repair. I have older 42 year old Mercedes and some parts are now impossible , what is heads up on the Vic? Hard question.
This was happening to my car but I already needed to have it inspected in general after purchase and have some other repairs done. The shop didn't replace the solenoid they just lubricated it apparently and it's been working fine since
Good job! Mine went bad about 3 years ago. After finding out this was the fix, i just kept a small punch to press the release button on the bottom when shifter wouldn't move. After a year or so, I just epoxied the button. So far, so good.
I had a family member whose young son managed to pull a shifter out of park, then panic and when trying to get out of the vehicle, fell and was run over by the vehicle. Miraculously, despite a Chevy Suburban rolling over him, he was basically uninjured
@@WJHandyDad Lucky for him. I worked with a dude that had a packard roll over him when he was small, no serious injury. I guess the children are more bendable. No young'uns around. I grew up in the '60's. Always apply the parking brake before shutting off and hold the brake when shifting.
The same Engineer that designed this also did the heater core that you have to drop the dash to get to. Instead of reversing it and letting you take it out from the front.
Great information! Man i wish this video was available years ago haha, i had this exact problem on my 2008 crown vic seems to be a common problem for sure especially on the police version
You’re my favorite mechanic, especially since I’m still running four of the nine of these cars I’ve bought. Two civilian and seven interceptors. Today my job is to swap out a side mirror, son had a deer run into him. Damaged the quarter panel shattered the front windshield and seriously damaged both doors. $2,900 estimate, from the insurance. And yes I’ve got a parts car or two. So all in will be $350 for the windshield.
So I just had my car pop up multiple issues at once. So first off my keyfob stopped working then I realized my trunk button on driver door would not open trunk. So I believe my driver door control module is broken. However additionally I have this issue with being stuck in park so for now I’ve had to use the override button on bottom of steering column. Also, I have zero brake lights or cruise control. Anyone have any ideas? Literally all this came together at once!! 2008 Grand Marquis GS
all at once would seem to rule out a whole bunch of things simultaneously breaking and rather some sort of power failure, whether it be a cut wire, bad ground, or blown fuse.
All the fuses are good. I checked em all . I think there is a short somewhere . Or bad lighting control module. I replaced the break switche and cruse control switch near break pedal.. the battery ground to chassis is good . Anyone have any suggestions
I am trying to figure out what this tube is that is sticking out of the rear drivers side fender well at about 3 o'clock on the rear wheel. It is the same on both my 07 and 11 CVPI"s. Any idea? Thanx
Will this solenoid also prevent the transmission to be shifted back into Park, from Reverse? I can't get my car to go all the way into Park but the shifter cable seems fine.
on a 1999 to 2001 merc marquis and ltd the interlock solinoid is on top of the collum drop the collum down and its exposed dont remove the steering wheel def remove the air bag disconect the battery first
i changed the shift lever on my 06 years ago, because the boot was all ripped up which bothered me, and that was way easier to change than this little thing! just pop off the boot, then the steering wheel top cover, you don't even need to take off the bottom part of the clamshell that's bolted in if i remember right, take out the screw for the shift lever (i will admit there's not much clearance to get enough torque on the screw but not that bad).
Hey i have this problem on my 05 cvpi, question is, what if i neglect this entirely? Is it just an annoyance or will it affect other sytems over time P.s the next time you align a bolt use three assymetrical marks so it can only go on one way
it will progressively get worse (supposedly) so it's a nuisance. But if it eventually totally breaks you won't be able to shift out of park without manually doing it. As far as damaging anything else, it should not affect anything else
I just had my steering wheel off to swap it out with one that has the cruise control buttons, I knew I should have changed this at the same time. Mine just really started sticking on the first start during these chilly mornings. After that it's fine. I might try to just take the column surround off and see if there is any way to shoot some lube on it. I rather not have to take that air bag off again, that was a pita!
I'm trying to remember but it seems like you might be able to lubricate the moving part without removing the steering wheel. Maybe one of those "precision oilers" to get in there and not get oil all over the place
@@telderjr0586 I probably won't have time to. I show the part in this video. The little knob that pops up and down is what needs lubrication... just a dab

lubricating it does seem to fix it too
@@WJHandyDadhow do you lubricate it? Like what would be safe to use?
I used gun oil and it didn't hurt it
It worked! Thanks a bunch!

I don't have access to the puller you used for the steering wheel. Can this calanoid be bypassed?
get yourself some sort of puller tool... it will get used for all sorts of things as you decide to tackle more and more projects

yeah, I changed the one on my 2008 because when I got it looked like they stabbed it over and over again
Can you oil the solenoid without removing it?
I don't know if that would be a true fix or not and I honestly don't remember if it was accessible without all the "surgery"
Doesn’t look like my 2001 Crown Victoria LX, can’t see what year this one is
the one in the video is a 2008. So yeah, there are possibly a lot of differences, I don't know since I have never owned or worked on a 2001
