Hillary we moved into this home over 3 years ago, our basement is unfinished and out grandchildren love to play down there because it is wide open, my husband painted the floor with just concrete paint, he gave it 2 coats. Needless to say our grandchildren have totally enjoyed it, they ride bikes, scooters, roller blades, you name it and it has probably happened in our basement. The paint is still intact, no chipping or scraping at all! I would skip that acid and just paint it!

    @leanneb6622 3 года назад +9

My mom just swept, vaccumed, mopped the floors with a squirt of dawn before she painted the laundry room floors. They looked great. Save your health and money return the acid is my recommendation.

  • @CurvyGirls

Hilary, since there are no windows to vent the fumes from the acid, I would forgo that product totally. Wash the floors with a degreaser product and make doubly sure that all the soap film is rinsed. Just like when you painted your cabinets, the grease and soap had to be removed as well for adhesion. Then give the floor two coats and move on. The idea of using wheels for your storage shelving is wonderful, it gives you easier cleaning and less lifting, very important. I would also really think through what is being stored in your basement, do you need outside cushions down in the basement? Would it make more sense to have outdoor items in an area in your car garage? Less items mucking about your storage area also will cut down on nests of spiders.

We love the black 5 tier wire shelves from Target. We use locking casters so we can pull out the shelves to access items, paint, or to sweep/mop. They work out great in our utility areas to neatly store Christmas, entertainment, paint/maintenance, outdoor cushions, gardening, etc.
You may want to get a key pad lock for that room to keep the kids safe. You use a code or key to get in and turn the handle to get out so there is no fear of getting locked inside.

Good morning! I'm Denise. I just found your channel and admire everything that you are doing! I have to share the BEST storage shelf solution ever...I have the chrome shelves I bought from Lowe's for $69 ( they look similar to the chrome ones you have with the clothing pole, but they have 5 shelves. They also have packs of 4 wheels with rubber treads, available for $25 so you can unscrew the feet on the shelves and replace them with wheels. That way you can roll them around to clean floors, paint, etc. They are so versatile, and to me they are awesome since the shelves can be adjusted to any height you want. I like them even better than built- ins because you can disassemble them if you dont need them later. They are extremely sturdy. I have many of them for my basement and garage storage. For the chrome shelves you have now, you can replace the feet with those same wheels and its sooo much better to be able to move them if you want to. Check out Lowes website.

Wow! That really was a Monica room! I did not take you for a Monica but many of us probably have a similar hidden spot. 🙄 I’m looking forward to the final reveal. The paint alone was a huge improvement. We used muriatic acid to prep a garage floor and it worked wonderfully in that high traffic well ventilated space. I probably wouldn’t use it in an enclosed storage space.

We did our base floor with a paint that had some sand rock mixture in it for a grip and it is OK for bare feet. Our store suggested the same Murlatic Acid and my husband said we would find a alternative, I do not recall the name because it has been some time now when we did it.We have moved several times, and the company moved us but the last time we moved our selves and save some money, but as stubborns as I was I did not clean my crafts and quilting and so my husband made me put my totes in the moving truck myself. That was all it took, I down size when we got to the new house and just kept saying if I had to move it once I was not going to do it twice .Glad to see you are thinking ahead and wiser now then I was. You will be glad that you did it. Stay Safe Till The Next Time

Just a Mental Hack I use,,, I have a room that has no windows, so I use a shower curtain with a picture of the Eiffel Tower on one wall to mentally brighten that room, it makes me smile when I am in that room, where before it felt dreary. You can use any picture or print of something that makes you happy, I also added christmas lights to the back of the curtain to give some extra light to the room,,love it!

This is a huge job to accomplish, but you are being so smart by breaking it down into chunks. Once this area is set up and organized it will function so well for your family! I have no idea or experience with painting concrete, but I can tell you ,you will never regret purchasing vertical shelving units to hold all of your bins. Some shelves can be placed at right angles to the wall ( think library shelves ) if you have a deep side of the room, which might result in more of an open area on the other side. Best of luck.

  • @bri-crossing

I would skip the acid. Maybe use some light sandpaper to the floor so the paint can grab onto it. And put on a poly after you paint so it lasts longer.

Hilary, I just want to say at 1:55 into this, that the room you are tackling, you should be thankful for, cuz the rest of the house is beautiful. You have a room for the overflow.
When I don't have that, I stack totes and throw a tablecloth over it. Ta-da! Fixed it! LOL!😜

We did etch our garage floor 20 years ago and then used a two part epoxy paint. The floor looks as good today as it did when it was originally done. I think the reason you etch is to get that good grip. If you do etch make sure you have all windows open and fans exhausting while the floor dries.
RE: the clothes iron, I used to iron my husbands work clothes daily for years but now he wears scrubs to work. But, I would never get rid of my iron because there are many other things I use it for, sewing project (recently masks and pressing bonding tape for hems and repairs), craft projects (crayon shavings for waxed paper Valentine’s), lifting carpet and rug fibers that heavy furniture has crushed down, blotting and removing candle wax from table clothes and table runners, getting the white water rings out of wood furniture finishes and removing those little dents and depressions in wood furniture by steaming them out. Unbelievably I have done all of these things. I love your videos and I look forward to each new post. Good luck on the storage room clean out and organization!

  • @chlexiel.1022

I would skip the acid just for health reasons, fumes, environment etc. Paint the floor and maybe lay some rug runners where your walking path would be 😊. I just don’t like using very strong chemical-like things, especially when you can’t air it out with windows open etc.

Think of it like this, we buy that same kind of paint for our concrete porches outside and don’t use the acid. We live in Ohio where we have cold weather, snow, ice and salt.. my paint has held up fine outside so in your indoor room I’m sure it will be fine. The only thing that will bother it is probably scooting stuff along the floor which would scratch it. Lay a runner down the pathway to walk on if the traffic is high.

There are many uses for the iron when sewing, even something simple like making a straight hem you really need any iron to do it properly. Just a thought if you wanted to do more sewing projects in the future.

How great you are showing this project. I had a flood in my basement in 2019. We had ground surface water come up through our drains. Thank goodness I had insurance, but lots of things had to be thrown out including the indoor / outdoor carpet that was glued to the finished side . Everything had to be moved to the workshop side. And it's still there in bins, boxes, on shelving etc. I look at it and walk away. So I will try to tackle it gradually this year. You've given me some incentive. I will comment as I make progress. Thanks Hillary.😳🤗👏

Great progress. I agree with Penny North. I am 74 and I have a steamer and I am afraid of getting burned using it plus you need a door or something to hold up the garment to be steamed. I think your MIL would prefer to keep using the ironing board and iron. Only my opinion as I still do iron things. Haha. Old school. My laundry room side of the basement has a concrete floor that was painted and my son repainted many years ago and it is still in good shape. You might need two coats of paint since it was never painted but I would not want to use the acid. Love seeing all your progress. You are such a great inspiration and a lovely lady. May God bless you and your sweet family. I really enjoy all your videos so much.

Great job. Years ago I got into a habit of putting whatever paint doesn't get used from a gallon into pickle or other jars and throwing out the cans which tend to not seal well and rust. I label them with the color and the room they are used in. It helps if you use varying sized jars so you fill them up and not leave a lot of air. I have used the paint for touch ups that was even five years old. It is also nice to fill a tiny jar and tuck it into the closet of each room for quick touch ups and I bought a pack of artist brushes at Dollar Tree and tied one on each jar.. I painted the entire house when we moved in here and I had some large amounts left in many cans and mixed it all together and painted all the closets and my porch with it

We used muriatic acid before tiling and I think it helped. It can be intimidating since it is an acid but we just diluted in a bucket and used brooms to spread it out then old towels to dry and then a water wash to finish. It really only took maybe 20 minutes but the floors were totally ready once we were done.

I love your "moving mentality", Hilary. Hubby and I are early sixties, and EVERY decision we make; whether it's purchasing a major piece of furniture, or keeping any kind of keepsake; has to go through the filter of "what would we do if we had to move all this stuff?" The last time we moved, we were in our early 50's, and I'm still tired, just thinking about it, lol! I want to be able to move quickly and easily, should that day come. You came to that conclusion much sooner than we did! So wise and practical for one so young. Hugs, Pam xxxx P.S. Can't wait for the reveal!

Home Decor Tip: Unless it is 'seasonal' decor (Christmas, etc.),... it should be used in your house - or in the Donation Box...! That is what I have been doing with my stuff downstairs...if it is downstairs in a box, I have to ask myself the question, 'why?'... so if I don't bring it up and put it out...it needs to go....!

We’ve never used it indoors painting concrete just did a good floor wash first to cut any grease that might be in the floor. I love that particular paint. Around your oil furnace tank may need an extra scrub if there’s oil on the floor but that’s all we’ve ever done and 10yrs later floors are great.

I was told at the Benjamin Moore store to just wash my concrete floor with tsp, make sure there was nothing sticky left from the previous flooring (peel and stick tiles which don't stick well in basements) and paint with the porch and floor paint. It is so interesting to see someone else's house covered in drywall and cement dust just like ours was! We also had a mice invasion = my husband got 49 mice! So I can really relate to what you are going through! We are still deciding what construction supplies and tools are trash, donate, or keep. My husband needed help with that. Good luck with it all and good for you!

We painted our basement concrete floors with a paint and primer in one. I didn't even know about the acid. Ours are great without it! We use our basement for an extra living room area. The foot traffic never scuffed the floors. The couches did if they were drug around.

We painted our basement floor probably 10 or more years ago. The concrete was newer, but we still did the muriatic acid treatment. Not sure your concerns specifically, but we have been very pleased with the results. Our paint hasn’t chipped or flaked. My understanding is what it does is it allows the paint to bond better with the surface by giving it some texture to cling onto.

Wow what a huge job ! I'd probably shut the door forever and pretend it wasn't there ha ha. You are such a hard worker. Painting the walls made a huge difference and I can't wait to see more. I would also be concerned about using acid on the floors, particularly in an area that's not well ventilated. Stay safe and best wishes from Australia 🤗

I store my ironing board next to my dryer between the dryer and wall. It's never in my way but I know where it is when I need it. The iron itself goes in a cabinet above the dryer.

Good morning Hilary ☕️ great job! 🥰 Ahh I wish we had a basement instead of a attic. It would be much easier for us to store stuff and get what we need instead of going up the attic stairs praying for our safety. Always look forward to your videos.

I wouldn't use the muriatic acid. It's toxic and that doesn't appear to be a well-ventilated area. Plus, if you aren't going to use the room much, the paint should be fine by itself. You WILL meet your goal. Look how fast you knocked out the painting! Good job.

One time I mopped with straight vinegar. When I was done I left the mop on my porch ( concrete). In the morning I picked up the mop to put away and noticed that where the vinegar soaked mop stood there were etching left on the concrete.

On your porch and floor paint I've only used Valspar and it holds up well. I don't think you have to use the acid in a room like you're doing. If it was in the garage I can see all the extra work. You really have to clean your floor very well after using that acid. Which means lots of water.

Re: painting the pantry shelf ...that is a great idea to reuse, but I would encourage you to give the shelf a good clean and hang it up as is. This is a storage room and and the items you are storing are apt to scuff up the painted finish. I am enjoying following your organizing videos.

I’m so ready to move it out. Thank you for your wonderful video, you’re always so inspiring♥️. Your basement definitely will look amazing when you’re done 👍. looks wonderful hillary. i know the mental clutter of having the physical clutter really bothers me too. i am excited to know what you discovered about painting the floors and using the muriatic acid. i have thought of painting my garage floor but i have also thought of staining my floors in the house instead of using tile . i am currently trying to minimalize enough to get the old carpet out. it seems like there is always something to do when you own a home.

We used muriatic acid to clean my uncle’s in ground pool every year before painting it. Would not suggest it indoor for sure! Fumes were awful. Have painted basement floors and paint held up for years. Great job on your storage room!
