The thing about Colossus is, is that the issue for me isn't the headbanging, but moreover the discomfort. The trains have a slanted floor which feels like you're wearing high heels backwards, & the shoulder restraints have a flat bottom which will staple you into you seat. Also, I think the back rows of the cars have a flat floor, so next time i'll probably sit in the back. Last time I went on it I got insane cramp in my legs in the front row. Not only should they retrack the whole thing, but they need new trains, like the old ones in 2002, with a flat floor. Avalancha at Xetulul in Gautemala still uses the old trains, & it's said to be a decent ride by enthusiasts
I love Colossus; I've had my ups and downs with it as it got really, really rough in the late 2000s/early 2010s, but when I rode it in the 2016 season I immediately noticed it hadn't been that smooth for years. I got another ride in 2018 and again, not the smoothest thing in the world but that added to the intensity and I don't get a headache on it anymore.
The worst, most uncomfortable headbanger I’ve ever tried. I always felt like I got smashed with a hammer on the head from both sides. Adding the horrendous operations of Thorpe park and how rusty, dated the surroundings are, it’s a huge letdown.
I have three words to sum up colossus: No. Leg. Room. Its a really enjoyable coaster but its a shame about the train design. However at the end of the day its a Thorpe Park classic.
Yes... YES... YES! So glad you finally covered the mighty Colossus! After meeting you on my birthday trip to Thorpe in late October, it was fantastic to hear your thoughts on my favorite coaster, and after watching this, I fully agree with the points you made. Many don't take the time to properly explain and overview the ride as much as they should before jumping to the natural answer of 'it's rough'. As it's my all time favorite coaster, I'm surely biased, but I also don't find it to be as much the head rattler as others claim it to be. The ambience in the queue line and overall Lost City area is some of the best theming on-park, and is often overlooked by too many. It's got gorgeous detailing carved and etched into the architecture with the Colossus symbol, the wonderful IMAscore soundtrack (which I personally prefer to the original) whistling from the speakers all around the area, not to mention the queue line tunnels and spectacular viewpoints you can get of the coaster from nearly anywhere you choose. I rode it a total of 15 times on that trip, which amused and shocked the ride ops. Sadly it really doesn't get the love it deserves from many Thorpe fans. Most I've spoken to (at best) enjoy the coaster, but don't rush to it straight away. As a whole package, it's probably Thorpe's best, alongside The Swarm. The trains are uncomfortable for sure though that's my only real complaint with the whole experience. I made a full mini-documentary on the coaster and my opinions on it on my channel called 'Colossus: The Story Of 10' if you want to check it out. I'm thinking 2022 is likely the year it will receive it's well-deserved TLC we fans of the coaster are so desperately longing for, as it turns 20 that year. I'm hoping for some limited edition merchandise to add to my already concerningly large collection of Colossus stuff! Let's hope they restore the Lost City to it's former glory come it's big anniversary. Regardless, thank you for reviewing my favorite coaster so eloquently and fairly Shawn, and I hope to run into you again soon! -CTE
I went on this 2 years ago and I was scared at the start but it was very fun. One of my favourite parts is the bit where you go under the shop and you feel like you're about to hit you're head
I think if Colossus got new trains, it shouldn't have lap bars because I rode Sik & it was very uncomfortable during the heartline rolls. I think it should get the old shoulder restraints like in 2002, the restraints had to be modified to stop riders sticking their legs out of the cars. With modern technology i'm sure they could do something
I love colossus. It was the first big coaster at thorpe park, so I'll always have a soft spot for it, and it has the best interaction with the paths for ride viewers in the whole park.
Went to Thorpe Park for the first time in 23 years November 2020. This was a great coaster with all the inversions. Looking forward to going again when the parks re open. Great video Shawn 👍🏼
Another great review! Love your work! I’d love to see a park coaster rating when you’ve finished all the coasters in a park eg ranking all Thorpe park coasters that would be great!
Your enthusiasm for coasters is infectious. Really enjoyed this review! 😊 Makes me wanna go on a rollercoaster again... except I haven't been on one since 2003 and as an adult I'd probably hate it now!! I must learn to love them again!
This is tough on the neck and back, can only manage one ride per visit, but you can get some great off ride photos of this ride from loads of different angles. Great review and info
Shaun. One thing I’d say before I saw your reviews of theme parks and rides is “what does this guy know?”. I can certainly say this is my favourite coaster on the planet. My first coaster of which I am bias? I think you as a theme park is enthusiast are by far my favourite.long live these reviews brother
I felt Colossus a great ride, absolutely brilliant fun. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would, intense and smooth. Those heartline rolls are a highlight. Rode it twice in 2022. Left with shoulder bruises from the restraints, so agree lap bars would help. Loved it though.
I had my first ride on Colossus in April and while it wasn't the smoothest, it was fine. I had my second ride on Monday, and it was really rattly and rough. Is there a difference between the trains, or temperature, or time of day? Ride one was early morning, cool day. Ride 2 was mid afternoon, warm day...
My first big rollercoaster and second roller coaster ever and I was fine. I wasn’t sick and I didn’t get a headache but that was because I made sure to keep my head back although it did still shake my head a bit. I love the barrel roll but I feel like it just sort of pushes all of the loops into the end. Maybe one more large loop in the middle of the ride is needed.
Colossus has a strong place in my heart I’ve Been going to Thorpe park for 12 years now and will forever be my fav coaster I love the lost city theming maybe the Could add lap bars to make it a bit more comfortable
Got on the front row today. I thought I'd struggle with the train as I'm 6ft 4 but it was fine. Agree that they should repaint the track and supports, needs some TLC. Great ride, not as rough as I was expecting but it's not a patch on Smiler.
Hello There, great review and fantastic commentary as well, keep it up! Cheers Peter :) p.s. thank you for producing this as it's good to hear your perspective on this Rollercoaster, great to hear your opinions on both the offride and onride perspectives. p.p.s. It seems that John Wardley designed the overall layout with a lot of thought into it.
Another great video as always Shawn mate. My opinion on Colossus is again it’s a decent ride. When I first rode it back in July 2018, I was on the back row and it was very intense but quite rough. When I rode it 2 months ago in September, it was a lot smoother because I was in the middle row of the train. So I think personally if you want a smooth ride on Colossus go on the middle row upwards but if you go from back row to the row behind the middle it’s a rougher experience. So my overall opinion of Colossus is that it’s a great coaster it may have its rough patches if you’re near the back of the train but from the middle row upwards it’s smoother
Colossus is good but Jesus I was at the back and I felt like I had a concussion from all the head banging from the restraints other than that great theming and I love the cobra roll and the air time hill and even the corkscrew parts but otherwise I think it could benefit from new restraints paint job and maybe some more leg room
Hey Shawn, I know the coasters are your big thing and I'm loving the reviews. A big part of the reason I follow this channel is that you seem enthusiastic about the other things like dark rides and water rides. I'd love to see some reviews of those too! Just a suggestion.
I’m 6’03 and can’t fit in the seat because of the ridiculous restraints... 1 hour wait to be told I’m too tall...! Like on the swarm there should be a sign at the entrance saying a maximum height!
I had the same issue. I’m 6’3 and a 34 inch waist and I couldn’t fit in the restraints when I went last month either. Which is strange as I’ve ridden it several times before, and haven’t put on any weight (at least I hope so 😂). My friend I was with is a similar size and didn’t get on either. Thankfully was only a 15 minute queue so not too much time wasted. But it’s a bit embarrassing being told you have to get off the ride in front of everyone as people probably naturally assume you’re too overweight for it 😱. We got a queue hop for Nemesis for it though, every cloud 😂
Hi Shawn.... keep up the good work during these bad times around the world. Well done. As your making reviews of the rides... how about making a review on the new Alton Towers CD from IMAscore. The music to Wickerman... The Smiler... SpinBall Wizzer, etc. What you think of the tracks. Or you may have done something like this and i must of missed it.... just an idea. All the best and keep up the good work. Roll on 2021 as , i hope, for a better year all round.
Back in the early 2000's I was going to thorpe park pretty regularly. I still remember in 2002 when I went on Colossus it was my first major coaster. As a 10 year old it was a pretty big thing for me to ride and is probably the start of my enjoyment of coasters. Must admit I have not been on for a few years and have not been that much to Thorpe Park. To me I think that it might be a good time to think about a refurb and new trains. The experience could be taken to a new level with modern trains. As you say it was probably the coaster that started a lot of innervation. But it will be 20 years in about 18 months
Colossus was the first inverted coaster I ever went on. First rode it in 2006 when I was 13 years old and I was terrified but after riding it I absolutely loved it.
I rode Colossus in 2003 on my very first trip to Thorpe Park, it was on a very busy Fright Night, and I LOVED it, especially in the dark. Sadly every visit since then I've enjoyed it less and less and last time I went (2019) I skipped it altogether to avoid the migraine and concussion.
wow i have just ridden this and i think this ride is extremely underrated, as long as you sit towards the front, but the restraints where shocking because on all the other rides here, they go to your waist but the restraints on colossus go on to your thighs
I remember going on colossus back in 2002 when it opened was a brilliant ride back then but I think now its a real head banger and it looks really neglected hopefully thorpe will give it a freshen up in the years to come great video Shawn
I like the variety of inversions and love the theming soundtrack etc, but the queues are often too long and it's a pretty rough ride combined with the lack of legroom especially if you're a tall fella like me. Swarm and Stealth are both easily better imo. 5/10
I just found out about this channel, this amazing channel and subbed. I have rode colossus at least 25 times, and I agree with everyone else about it being a little bit but dont get me wrong in my opinion it is a great rollercoaster. I love you TPW
Very Interesting topic...Very well Presented as ever .a great amount of information I never knew...so thank you Verdict on the coaster and Nice to see it on Face Book with a RUclips link still one of the top Rides ..True it could do with a paint..BUT still way up there at No 1 ...I remember when it opened .it was epic ..and for that reason ..let it stay -let it continue
OMG i havent rode collossus yet bec it takes 3 hrs for me to get to thorpe but ive went to chessington and thorpe for now chessington is my 2nd best theme park!! Theme park worldwide i love your channel !!
I love it. I mean between Colossus and Saw you come out that part of the park feeling like maybe you should just go for a sit down on swarm. The theme does need updating, I really dislike the restraints. What can you say. They are dated. However, I love it. The lift hill, looking out over the lake. The inversions. It’s a fun old fashioned coaster. I’ll be gutted when it goes.
Honestly my favourite coaster at Thorpe park i admit if u don’t sit right in the restrains ur head does bang around a little bit but if u keep ur head back like they suggest it’s good and amazing
Good coaster, but it's another example of Thorpe Park having poor restraints and it's gotten pretty painful the last couple of years. However, it put Thorpe Park on the map and led to 10 amazing years at the park. I hope Thorpe can put something new in soon that will cause the excitement and buzz of the glory days.
i remember my first time on colossus. thought it was great. second time i thought it was rough. i think it depends on which seat your in. speaking of seats i just dont find intamin trains comfortable especially ones with otsr's like colossus, stealth and rita. i always find my legs cramp up for some reason.
The reason they got rid of the water was to make morning inspections and repairs alot easier and vehicles would be able to go down there if necessary. Keep up the good work. 😊
I loved it. I got a ride in before the park opened as I stayed in the hotel. And I loved it so much I rode it again. As just a ride experience my fav thorpe coaster but with theaming probably swarm
I think Thorpe park recently mist an opportunity for a great fit in to the lost Kingdom area Rameses revenge would of been perfect even if it was a short term thing to replace slammer Rameses revenge was still working un like slammer. It would be interesting to know what you think to that idea.
Still for me my overall favourite coaster despite doing over ones which I would consider to be better such as shambhala. For me the fact that it is low down and has great path and foliage interaction makes it for me. Enjoy the teeming, but disappointed I never got to see it in it's original form having been to young at the time. Since 2009 though I have over 500 rides on this and find it the most rerideable coaster at thorpe, havent missed it on a single visit since then. I think the ride also just ranks for me due to personal memories such as it arguably being my first major coaster (excluding an slc but I choose to ignore that) and riding it 23 times without getting off a dead day and consistently spending the last hour of the day just lapping it back in 2011-14 when it was much quieter. I personally dont find it rough, the only jolt I find is at the transition into the vertical loop. However I can see why people find it rough but you have to know how to ride it. Personally I find the back of the cars more comfortable as I am taller, and in particular my favourite seat is the back right seat as you get pulled through some of the elements really nicely, and controversially I do actually like the restraints, idk what it is but the weight of them I think has some sort of psychological effect which makes them work for me. I think as well the chain disengage noises and roar of the ride are what gives it character and makes it better. Whilst it is a shame that less of the ride is over water and the ming is being lost particularly under the vertical loop, im more than happy to lose it to keep the ride running, although it did allow for really nice pictures of the corkscrew before, but do wish that the gravel there could at least have grass over it. However I do think that the train repaint last year really did make them look nice and fresh again. On that note I'd also say that it's got my favourite station, particularly the paintings on the walls and the lighting, particularly when the blue filters are fitted properly by the entrance and the hanging lights are all working. However, I do wish the same that there was something even as basic as a star cloth covering the ceiling, although I'd say its hidden decently enough by the hanging lights. In addition for me the soundtrack is one of the best out there, particularly the original score, I never once got bored of it. Really not a fan of the new one as I feel it doesn't create the same intimidating atmosphere as the original. And then the station announcements and loop are great as well, in particular the dispatch audio is a highlight and builds atmosphere well. Also for me at least it is one of the best night rides out of there as it leaps under and over paths and into and out of darkness, it just makes it feel really out of control and I guess that's what I enjoy about it, it doesn't feel too controlled like some of the other rides out there. Overall colossus is always a highlight for me, disappointed I only got 2 rides on it this year as I was only able to visit once, but look forward to riding it for many years to come for sure and hope that time and money are invested to keep this ride going strong.
Colossus is only my 4th favourite at Thorpe (I’m a bit tall for it really) but I still enjoy it, it has a personality what with all the noises it makes and the lift hill and the restraints. Always good fun
Couldn’t agree more with you Shawn. I find it slightly rough but nothing major. Definitely needs new trains though it would be so much more comfortable.
Honestly I agree with Shawn, it’s actually one of my favourites with saw being my first. It isn’t as rough for me but I guess height and size is a really big factor. I guess I like the rough rides 😂
Colossus is the 3rd best coaster at Thorpe park, the only thing that makes it 3rd is the toughness of it, I remember getting a massive headache on the ride, it got so bad I had to take some paracetamol, to me, change the restraints to the modern design, and I’ll ride it again
I love Colossus BUT I feel like I come off the ride needing some sort of cranium treatment. Love it though and the ride soundtrack is gorgeous on the ears :)
Colossus is good, apart from the headache after lmaoooo
I know i tried to get to sleep but it felt like i was still on it
Ooofff
Went loads times since lockdown ended , every ride in numerous different seats was rough but still fun 🎢
Once you mastered the first three inversions, Colossus suddenly starts to be smooth and a lot of fun. I love the corkscrews, as well as the last roll.
Brilliant to see another review one after another! You've nearly done all of Thorpe now congrats! Brilliant vid
Thank you! They’ll be plenty more reviews from other rides and theme parks on the way!
@@ThemeParkWorldwide Yes I agree with this comment -You do a Fab amount of work-and it pays off ..Loving the channel -well done !

Colossus I like. It's not the worst in the park but it's not the best. The new season has really been a good start to colossus :)
My first ride on Colossus was on the very back row and I was terrified because it was my first big inverting coaster

Lost city is my favourite place at the park. I love the theming and the theme song.
It’s great!
Me, a chessington kid, am fine with roughness.
God vampire is 35
How would you compare the head banging on colossus to vampire? I have been on vampire only and i value my head!

Ah yes, Heartline Roll: The Ride
(and yeah it's painful af for me, both due to the headbanging and the atrocious lack of legroom)
There’s certainly not much leg room in the back of the cars

I plan on finally going to Thorpe park this year. I can’t wait!
I like it. It’s both smoother and more forceful in the front row, plus the good view.
colossus was terrible for me it really hurt but it led the way for my favourite coaster the smiler

wow i have just ridden this and i think this ride is extremely underrated, as long as you sit towards the front, but the restraints where shocking because on all the other rides here, they go to your waist but the restraints on colossus go on to your thighs
Colossus is basically what I believe it would feel like to have a car crash… yeaaah…
I remember going on colossus back in 2002 when it opened was a brilliant ride back then but I think now its a real head banger and it looks really neglected hopefully thorpe will give it a freshen up in the years to come great video Shawn
Let’s hope it gets a well deserved refurb!
I only rode this twice back in 2010 it was a great coaster. I look forward to the flamingoland clone opening!
whole ride 100/10
I think that saw is rougher than collosus
Still waiting on your top 10 for 2020 :( excited to see it as you haven't done an updated one since you've been on you USA Mega trip!
Thank you for watching!
I personally really enjoy colossus I prefer the actual ride to saw. Please do tidal wave, love the theming and ride’
I’m also the same!
LOVE that t-shirt !! - cool vid 👍👍👍
Thanks! Love TOT!
Thank you very much!
It has a very skinny track it’s weird but I didn’t enjoy it as much this year as when I went when I was younger
Underrated coaster :)
Yooo MCR
AGREED
Really enjoying these review videos Shaun 👏
Thank you! There’s a dedicated playlist on the main channel page with 9 others that I’ve filmed so far!
Keep the reviews coming by the way Shawn! They're very good :)
Thank you, they’ll be more on the way soon!
Please review nemesis or galactica
They’ll be plenty more reviews on the way!
@@ThemeParkWorldwide nice!
My favourite roller-coaster there BUT The whole area needs a refurbishment. Love the vegetation within the queue lines aswell.
OMG i havent rode collossus yet bec it takes 3 hrs for me to get to thorpe but ive went to chessington and thorpe for now chessington is my 2nd best theme park!! Theme park worldwide i love your channel !!
Let’s hope you get to ride it soon!
It’s a great ride!
Hi Shaun I went in colususs at fright night and I found it really good but tough and head bangy at the same time.
The reason they got rid of the water was to make morning inspections and repairs alot easier and vehicles would be able to go down there if necessary. Keep up the good work. 😊
Thanks for watching! It’s just a shame after so many years of still inspecting the ride with water, they decided to remove it!
@@ThemeParkWorldwide i know. I actually prered the water but at the end of the day it is up to them what they do.
I actually quite like colossus, it’s not too rough if you hold your head forwards or if you sit in the front row!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
theres no leg room though
have you done a nemesis review ?
They’ll be more reviews on the way in the dedicated reviews playlist soon!
okay i love your reviews and by the way i find collosus kind of smooth but the trains are awful.
Watch the link this is very interesting from Mack as they released an upgrade to blue fire
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I love ur channelllll
Thanks Helen!
I’m really hoping to go to Thorpe park 2023. Just with all the rides especially that amazing looking intimin it’s a must go.
Colossus is only my 4th favourite at Thorpe (I’m a bit tall for it really) but I still enjoy it, it has a personality what with all the noises it makes and the lift hill and the restraints. Always good fun
@@blank3078 6ft 4, it's certainly not comfortable on the legs
Head smashing against the guards and no leg room (at the back) removed the fun for me
Couldn’t agree more with you Shawn. I find it slightly rough but nothing major. Definitely needs new trains though it would be so much more comfortable.
It would certainly improve the experience
That is one of my favourite ride
Amazing 😊😊😊
colossus is really underrated the front row isnt even that rough its a great fun ride all the elements are great but the cobra roll is pretty rough
Honestly I agree with Shawn, it’s actually one of my favourites with saw being my first. It isn’t as rough for me but I guess height and size is a really big factor. I guess I like the rough rides 😂
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I think colossus looking a bit worn fits the theme of the area well
SHAWN I'VE GOT THAT TOWER OF TERROR SHIRT
Colossus is the 3rd best coaster at Thorpe park, the only thing that makes it 3rd is the toughness of it, I remember getting a massive headache on the ride, it got so bad I had to take some paracetamol, to me, change the restraints to the modern design, and I’ll ride it again
I love Colossus BUT I feel like I come off the ride needing some sort of cranium treatment. Love it though and the ride soundtrack is gorgeous on the ears :)
Colossus was my first looping ride when I went early october
It was fun on the first inversion going around 45mph
