The part that I really love about this movie is how well they depicted the denial and hopelessness in the Germans. They truly wanted to believe that they could overturn the Soviets and win the war but as soon as they realise all hope for a greater Germanic world is lost they start killing themselves
It's honestly sad that they didn't, I truly believe we defeated the wrong enemy. The worst Nazi is still infinitely more civilized than the best Rus*ian.

Hitler knew that he couldn't defend Berlin from the soviets, but the relationship between soviets and western allies already started to show some cracks, so his hope was to resist long enough for the americans to see Stalin's true colours and realize that Germany would be a valuable resource to hold Russia off in Europe, then he could have negotiated with UK and USA, unfortunately for him the cold war started much later and the german army didn't resist until then. Goebbels mentions it in this movie, but in reality it was Hitler's idea

At the end, that is Hitler’s secretary, Traudl Junge (played by the young woman whose performance was so superb). She mentioned the statue of Sophie Scholl. Sophie Scholl and her brother were German teens and leaders of the White Rose resistance. They were captured and beheaded by Hitler. The age she was beheaded was the same age Traudl Junge was when she went to work for Hitler. That’s why Traudl Junge says at the end, ‘Youth was not an excuse, I could’ve tried to find out what was going on.’
This film is all the more powerful being done by the Germans themselves. Almost an admission, looking themselves in the mirror. Very few films dare to portray Hitler on screen beyond a photo on a Generals desk or a painting on a wall. In the way they Humanize him is crucial and almost alluring at first, we can't forget they were people behind this and not myths. You sometimes forget you're not watching a documentary or even in the room yourself. On par with Saving Private Ryan in every way. P.S. He only chose her because she was from Munich...birthplace of Nazism essentially.
Hey there, great reaction. I remember the 1st time i've seen Downfall. It was just after the release of the Movie, and never before and afterwards i have seen people leaving a cinema that quietly. A few things that i want to comment or add. 1:45 I think one major reason why Traudl Junge was choosen as Hitlers secretary was that she was from Bavaria. Hitler loved southern Germany, the mountains and people from there. You cant notice if you dont speak german, but that, that Hitler was dictating in this scene, and what she was typing was completley messed up with spelling errors in almost every word. 4:12 It Never was Albert Speers intention to take Hitlers place. I think Speer encouraged Hitler in his decision to stay in Berlin was because he knew that it would accelerate the end. There is a lack of evidence but there are rumors that Speer even tried to kill Hitler a few days before the events of this movie happened. 11:35 True thing. Many people couldn't imagine but Hitler and his party, th NSDAP was elected in a democratic way in 1933 and their party program clearly said: "We will remove democracy and establish a dictatorship." 22:40 The chance of survival was higher as a soldier than as a civilian. As you have seen earlier in the movie there where groups that are randomly killing civilians, and the russians have done the same. As a civilian you cant trust neither side, and when you arm yourself you will be shot as a partisan or traitor. As a soldier, especially on company of officers you can say "'I'm part of this Unit." There have been so many suicides mainly because they feared the repercussions of the allies, especially of the russians. Many the them that comites suicide have been war criminals directly by comiting crimes by themselves or indirectly by ordering it. Many characters appear brainwashed because Hitler wasn't always that insane, or better he wasn't that insane on the outside. Hitler came to power in a time of extreme crisis in Germany, and he archived a economic and political stabilisation in Germany within a few years, that's why they trusted him. They also looking onto an uncertain future. They know that they followed a criminal regime and have to pay the price for it. A little anecdote about the performance of Bruno Ganz (Hitler): During a little break at the set, Bruno Ganz, still made up as Hitler, wearing uniform etc., walked a little bit away from the set, practicing his lines. An eldery woman walked by and was scared to hell as she sees Ganz, even knowing that Hitler couldn't be alive anymore, and Ganz has to convince her that he is just an actor. If you like movies like that you should try "Das Boot" from 1981, which i think is one of the best movies ever made, especially the 5h TV version, or the movie "Stalingrad" from 1993.
Ironic She killed her children with second husband. Her oldest son from first marriage is still alive. His family is still one of the richest family in Germany .
One of my favorite scenes from this movie is when Hitler is staring at one of his favorite paintings which is called Frederick the Great. Perhaps, Adolf could have been a painter in another reality. This is one of my favorite films.
My mother and grandma have told me a lot about this war. fear of war. afraid of the Russians. afraid of the Jews from the concentration camps. They lived in Czechoslovakia at the time. And had to flee. From the hatred because of Nazi Germany, of course. I was in Buchenwald myself as a child and later with my wife. Notorious for its terrible experiments on humans. When you stand there you get goosebumps about what happened there.

Downfall is a great movie, is really impresive. Bruno Ganz made a wonderful performance there, RIP. Traudl Junge was very close to Hitler. In fact, he considered as a friend besides she was his secretary. That's the reason when he gave her the hydrogen cyanide, he said "I'm so sorry I can't give you a better present". When the war was over and Traudl had to pass all the russian soldiers and got affraid when she saw one is because, when the Berlin's battle was developing, the Red Army made a massive raping against the german women, as "revenge", and Traudl could have been one of these women, so she terrified when saw the russian, but Peter reacted and that did not happen. This movie was made with some Traudl Junge's memories.
Probably difficult to film six kids foaming at the mouth for several minutes, I’d imagine. I also read that in reality, the morphine didn’t work on the eldest child so she was still awake while they forced cyanide in her mouth. Some things are better to be made a little more palatable!

On the Japanese side, a good film about the end of WW2 would be "Japan's Longest Day". Also, from a civilian perspective, the animated film, "Grave of the Fireflies".
As a... companion to this, you guys should watch Jo Jo Rabbit. It's a dark comedy about a young Hitler Youth who's imaginary friend is Hitler. Very funny but has a damn good message. Death of Stalin is a good one too, mainly because almost everything in that movie actually happened, but they play it as a comedy.
It seems stupid they refused to surrender, but remember, the last time they did surrender was WW1, and they got the Treaty of Versailles, which put them in a severe economic depression, they never wanted to endure that again.
Such an amazing movie and to think it was made by Germans one of the few movies about this time and the Gantz the man playing Hitler should have won an oscar he does such an amazing job
No force on Earth could have held onto Berlin under the circumstance, even if Hitler hadn't further descended into madness. The Red Army bearing down on Berlin was 1.5 million strong with thousands of tanks and they had surrounded and cut down the German armies that remained in the east. And they could get no relief from the forces on the Western front because the Americans, the British, and the rest of the Allies were pushing into western Germany. Almost all of the remaining German tank divisions were destroyed in the failed attempt to break through on the western front in the winter of 1945, this action also used up most all of the remaining fuel that the German army had.
15:10 this was actually true, during the battle of berlin the german army had 900.000 soldiers and almost 2.000 tanks in Prague, they could have been useful in Berlin, but by then the germans didn't have anymore logistics to move so much manpower
I think the moral of the story is that extremists are able to hold on to their delusions even when reality is literally raining on top of them. The way they acted when delusion can no longer keep them from facing reality is also terrifying. Look at how many killed themselves and their families.
For many of those people the reality was that they were sure they were going to be executed and maybe even tortured before. Even death on their own terms seemed better than what they feared would happen in Russian captivity. Ironically most high ranking nazis and war criminals were set free after the war or had relatively short jail sentences. The allies wanted their experience and administration for the future.
I would enjoy seeing you watch Valkyrie. Feigelstein was a mass murderer. If Hitler didn't have him killed the Allies would. The best dramatic presentation of World War II from the perspective of the allies is, imo, Band of Brothers, and secondarily the movie Saving Private Ryan.
My fave tid bit about this film , is that the actor for Hitler,,decided to pay attention more to how he spoke in a relax setting rather than how he speaks at rallies and his formal speeches. There is a some audio recording of him speaking casually with another, i forget who but i think it was a birthday thing. I also love how the actor pays attention to the smallest of movements, like having one of his has be slightly shaky, which is why hitler when in public has his hands behind his back, as an attemp to hide his hand shaking

The classic scene where Hitler is freaking out at all of his generals is such a great scene. Bruno Ganz has his mannerisms down to the smallest detail, the way he pulls his nose in and shakes his head in disgust when calling them all cowards and the hand gestures too! And all the while that super creepy fanatic Goebbels is just standing there all petty looking at them like "YOU have made poor master so angry! YOU screwed this up! Not me!" 🤮🤮
The movie is a nightmare. Like "All Quit on the Western Front". Like a wrong thought destroys a generation. There is a very important German film from the 50'. A classic. It shows the madness towards children and young people who were used by the Nazis. "The Bridge". The film was nominated for an Oscar. It's about young people who were abused for a meaningless bridge.

From Hitler’s perspective it would not be unreasonable to view his end as no less than end of the entire world, as the Gotterdammerung.

19:00 Eva is a TEXTBOOK victim of Narcissistic abuse (it's the truth) and when you feel powerless and unvalued/unloved (Hitler basically ignored her incessantly for their entire relationship until she attempted suicide, it was extremely dysfunctional as their affair had to be a complete secret from the public) you can turn into an abusive person yourself bc of all the anger you repress so you take it out on someone weaker. But yeah, assaulting the dog was her way of getting revenge or "justice" for herself through hurting Hitler's BELOVED dog who he preferred over Eva.

To really understand why the Germans fought to the bitter end, even though most knew by 1942 that the war was already lost, see German history. Summarized : It took Germany centuries to find and get its national identity. In all epochs, forces from all over the world have prevented a unity of a people who had a common country, a common culture and language. Between 1848 and 1871, the Germans fought for their national identity and flourished in art, culture, science and technology. After World War I it was again humiliated by the victors and attempts were made to destroy it. The Treaty of Versailles was a disgrace and a dishonor to so proud a country and people. Adolf Hitler would never have been what he was if the victors of 1918 hadn't treated the Germans so badly. The Germans saw World War II as compensation for the humiliation of the "Peace of Versailles". They knew that this war was the "fight of the German nation". There were only two options. Either you win and thus regain your honor and pride before the world, or you perish for good and lose everything you have fought for centuries. Germany lost the war and ceased to exist as a nation. Today Germany is an occupied country under the thumb of the USA. It has no more pride and makes a clown in front of the whole world. Economically and scientifically independent but politically and identity-wise dependent at the mercy of the victors of 1945. Seen from this point of view, many of the statements made in the film make sense that one would not understand without knowing the history of the Germans.

But til the days we now live in there always had been a 'black spot' deep within my brain and yeah . . . I don't understand how this ever could happen to logical thinking people. My father had been member of the Hitlerjugend and after the attack at Wolfsschanze - managed by Stauffenberg - he had no longer been on the bright side of life cause our family is related somehow to Stauffenberg's. You might be wondering what I’m talking about. Stalin killed more of his own people, officers, soldiers and more importantly civilians than German soldiers did Jews or POWs in WW2. Stalin and the communist Russians were worse than Hitler in terms of morals. To kill your own people in such a barbaric way and then use propaganda to cover it up like Stalin did with the little girl is monstrous.

all in my dad family have been german soldier during ww2 all of his 11 brother fought to the very last end in berlin they saw the start they saw the end we only know what happend to my great grandpa and his SS brother i have picture off all of them my great grandpa was in the krigesmarine and his mother got an iron cross and a letter from hitler

A friend of my mother was sent out as a boy into the outskirts of Berlin to battle the Russians. He never wanted to talk about those days.

I think the moral of the story is that extremists are able to hold on to their delusions even when reality is literally raining on top of them. The way they acted when delusion can no longer keep them from facing reality is also terrifying. Look at how many killed themselves and their families.
For many of those people the reality was that they were sure they were going to be executed and maybe even tortured before. Even death on their own terms seemed better than what they feared would happen in Russian captivity. Ironically most high ranking nazis and war criminals were set free after the war or had relatively short jail sentences. The allies wanted their experience and administration for the future.
I would enjoy seeing you watch Valkyrie. Feigelstein was a mass murderer. If Hitler didn't have him killed the Allies would. The best dramatic presentation of World War II from the perspective of the allies is, imo, Band of Brothers, and secondarily the movie Saving Private Ryan.

My fave tid bit about this film , is that the actor for Hitler,,decided to pay attention more to how he spoke in a relax setting rather than how he speaks at rallies and his formal speeches. There is a some audio recording of him speaking casually with another, i forget who but i think it was a birthday thing. I also love how the actor pays attention to the smallest of movements, like having one of his has be slightly shaky, which is why hitler when in public has his hands behind his back, as an attemp to hide his hand shaking

It really excels in showing the desperation, the fanaticism, and the blindness to reality that was the German high command in the final days of the war. Every German was outnumbered, outgunned, and outplanned, and fighting desperately for survival to evade Russian capture. Yet they fought on, fearful of capture and death in captivity. In some areas they were outnumbered 1 : 12.

The classic scene where Hitler is freaking out at all of his generals is such a great scene. Bruno Ganz has his mannerisms down to the smallest detail, the way he pulls his nose in and shakes his head in disgust when calling them all cowards and the hand gestures too! And all the while that super creepy fanatic Goebbels is just standing there all petty looking at them like "YOU have made poor master so angry! YOU screwed this up! Not me!" 🤮🤮
The movie is a nightmare. Like "All Quit on the Western Front". Like a wrong thought destroys a generation. There is a very important German film from the 50'. A classic. It shows the madness towards children and young people who were used by the Nazis. "The Bridge". The film was nominated for an Oscar. It's about young people who were abused for a meaningless bridge.

This is one of my favorite movies. I have seen it several times now and this one had slightly different translations to the version I had seen.
To really understand why the Germans fought to the bitter end, even though most knew by 1942 that the war was already lost, see German history. Summarized : It took Germany centuries to find and get its national identity. In all epochs, forces from all over the world have prevented a unity of a people who had a common country, a common culture and language. Between 1848 and 1871, the Germans fought for their national identity and flourished in art, culture, science and technology. After World War I it was again humiliated by the victors and attempts were made to destroy it. The Treaty of Versailles was a disgrace and a dishonor to so proud a country and people. Adolf Hitler would never have been what he was if the victors of 1918 hadn't treated the Germans so badly. The Germans saw World War II as compensation for the humiliation of the "Peace of Versailles". They knew that this war was the "fight of the German nation". There were only two options. Either you win and thus regain your honor and pride before the world, or you perish for good and lose everything you have fought for centuries. Germany lost the war and ceased to exist as a nation. Today Germany is an occupied country under the thumb of the USA. It has no more pride and makes a clown in front of the whole world. Economically and scientifically independent but politically and identity-wise dependent at the mercy of the victors of 1945. Seen from this point of view, many of the statements made in the film make sense that one would not understand without knowing the history of the Germans.

1966 I was born (and still resident) German. But til the days we now live in there always had been a 'black spot' deep within my brain and yeah . . . I don't understand how this ever could happen to logical thinking people.
My father had been member of the Hitlerjugend and after the attack at Wolfsschanze - managed by Stauffenberg - he had no longer been on the bright side of life cause our family is related somehow to Stauffenberg's.
Hell, how happy and glad I am these days are over !

Stalin and the communist Russians were worse than Hitler in terms of morals. all in my dad family have been german soldier during ww2 all of his 11 brother fought to the very last end in berlin they saw the start they saw the end we only know what happend to my great grandpa and his SS brother i have picture off all of them my great grandpa was in the krigesmarine and his mother got an iron cross and a letter from hitler

Salam bro, I think another high intellect movie you and your dad would really much like, is the Departed (2006). It has a very good, and deep story. This time about the working of police and internal affairs in the US, with mobs etc. I think it is really thought-provoking and you would like it, and the cast is top class. Big hitters, directed by Martin Scorsese. Please consider it.
