    I've been owning a 300 SEL for 24 years and it has now 407.000 kms which is about 253.000 miles. It's so easy to maintain and it works like a charm ! I would never get rid of it. I love it too much ! It's pretty, it's aging very well, and it's very reliable.

    • @JHsadler
      @JHsadler 9 лет назад +7

      Only the old ones like the W126 are genuinely reliable. The new ones like these have mediocre reliability.

    • @markm0000

      The new ones are only reliable when you strip out all of the electronics. But that's heresy in the MB world.

    Thanks Jay, for doing what you do on TV and for automobiles.
    I am 61 years old and never had the money to build any of my ideas in real life.
    As a kid I built literally thousands of car models and motorcycles.
    Still a NASCAR fan and Autos in general and have raced motorcycles way back for about 10 years.
    I think you are the best ambassador of the auto industry there has ever been.
    Thanks and keep up the great work on both ends!

      I bought a 2015 CLA 45 AMG a few months ago and absolutely love it. Drives and handles great and sport mode just about throws you into the back seat. It's a turbo charged 4 cylinder with 355 HP and 0-60 in about 4.2 seconds. When it came out it was the most powerful 4 cylinder production model in the world. Hand assembled and signed engine. Gets 33+ mpg on the hwy!

    This was a great overview by a great car guy on a magnificent car...I just love the lines on this model...and while the SL65 may be more powerful, this one has more than enough oomph, and has that great exhaust note that sounds like you are at Darlington...I believe I have talked myself into getting one...

      The v12 is a terrible engine. It produces peak HP and Torque at a very specific rpm. It has no low end and hates revving. The AMG built v8 in this sl63 is the best engine on the face of the planet. Shame it's covered by jankey sensors and overcooked electronics, especially that shitty transmission.

    Jay Leno is so right this car will be a collectible years from now, sure it's going to depreciate first but, 40 or 50 years from now you probably will not be able to buy one for what it cost at the moment. look at the 300 Original Gullwing.

    • @markm0000
      @markm0000 8 лет назад +22

      He's probably remembering it as it used to be. Classic AMG cars were extremely expensive and held their value because very few were produced and they were built carefully by hand. Nowadays AMG means nothing. You can get a v6 c class with "AMG" ground effects as a optional package. Gone are the days of resale value in a Mercedes. If you want one, wait 5 years, they'll come down in price 70%

    • @Fedgery007

      +Mark M completely agree!

    • @janonkel286
      @janonkel286 7 лет назад +9

      Jay is right, look at the prices now, one's in good condition are already costing 60k again. Give it a few more years and it will be worth more than it did originally cost. Those are the last cars with a big, naturally aspirated engine. Even the 2013 C63 507 is slowly starting to rise it's price again.

    • @Fedgery007
      @Fedgery007 7 лет назад +3

      Maybe over time some cars will start to climb...but AMGs have horrible depreciation curves when bought from new.

    Despite the later corrected Powertrain specs, couple other things to note:
    1:33 Double Clutch - Nope, it's Mercedes's MCT: Multi-Clutch Transmission, which does not function as well as DSG/PDK, but simply use multiple clutch to replace the Torque converter, otherwise still the same 7G Tronic.
    2:57 Airscarf does not produce cool air, it only provides hot air for chilly weather. And of course, ladies who doesn't like the hair to smell burnt won't like it much.
    And please, if you're a car guy, pronounce Porsche the right way.

    I just bought a 2003 SL500 AMG with 100,000 KM or about 60,000 miles. I can't believe the power and frankly sometimes it scares me. As expected, I'm sorting out the ABC suspension system and some drive line vibration at 2000 RPM. Unless you're rich or a do it yourself mechanic, avoid this car. It cost about $120,000 new and the parts reflect that. But when rated in terms of "smiles per mile" gee whiz....

    Jay, that's not a double clutch transmission. As far as I know it's basically the normal automatic transmission but instead of the torque converter there's a wet clutch. It could be confused with a DCT because it has "MCT - Multi Clutch Technology", but that name comes from the clutches that do the gear change, the drive clutch is still a single clutch unit.

  • @Augustus222
    @Augustus222 11 лет назад

    Exactly, it has a wet multi plate clutch instead of the torque converter. Behind that is like a normal automatic with planetary gears.

      It's great actually! All we have to do is wait a couple years then people throw 'em away like they've been used to full capacity. So while the price depreciation might not be good for new Benz owners, it's great for anyone who ever wanted to afford their dream car; just a few years late ;)

      @AKhellbindeR 10 лет назад +4

      The reason is that cars like AMG's, BMW M's and Audi S/RS is driven by rich people. They are everywhere in some places. An AMG Mercedes literally wouldn't get you a second look in Beverly Hills. Many of these people get rid of them as soon as a new model comes out.

    • @geekatron8

      greg raines They will need maintenance, but the thing is, you only have to go in for regularly scheduled maintenance once a year. Granted, that once-a-year maintenance will cost you more than $700 but it is well worth it.

    • @ACabral711
      @ACabral711 9 лет назад +1

      greg raines Not at all, if you're resourceful and smart. It's harder to work on some Honda and Nissan products than it is to work on a big Benz with god knows how many servos and computers. It's all about doing the repairs on your own in a digestible manner. These cars look daunting on the surface, but if you take a systematic approach to servicing them, they are just like any other car, but with more parts, and a tiny amount more attention required.

    Buyer Beware: Here is a brief summary of my experience owning a 2003 Mercedes SL500. I bought this car from a local exotic car dealer in 2009. The car had 34,000 miles, looked gorgeous and drove great but the maintenance costs skyrocketed over time. I kept the car for four years and drove it a total of only 12,000 miles. It cost me $16,000 during these 4 years to keep the car running well and and I lost another $16,000 in depreciation costs when I sold it. The only thing that saved me from complete disaster was a very good extended warranty that covered many of the repairs. The warranty cost $4,000 for 3 years. My Lexus extended warranty, by comparison cost $1,200 for 6 years, but I have never needed to use it.

    Jay the transmission is not a dual clutch. Mercedes used a multi disc clutch instead of a torque converter. The transmission is a regular 7 speed automatic. Also it's has 465 pot not 600. I'm sitting here thinking something doesn't sound right.

    One of the greatest sl63's I've seen!
    These mercedes of 2009-2011 are even better then the new 2015 sl63 and I like them more because of the 6.3 amg v8 motor and they look better then the new one.
    One thing,I can't understand is that why mercedes is putting fucking 4.0 liter twin turbo v8 on almos tall 63's?
    And If before motors were naturally aspirated,now amg put some turbochargers on it.

      +Artiom Abreu new times mate, sadly but it is true... They are buting a turbo in just for the same reason Ferrari do when they put a turbo on the 488GTB or California T! :/

    Jay you should look in to Mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 spyder twin turbo also . that was the first modern car to have retractable hardtop like this SL63.

    Hi Jay: Sorry to correct you but the fans behind your head blow only hot air- its called air-scarf. Also this model you are reviewing does not have the Performance Package P30. The rims on the P30 package are solid one piece alloy... also it has higher torque and horsepower. and Limited slip diff. Also the steering wheel is completely different look... Its a Formula one wheel...replica..

    i used to work in a junk yard/scrap yard and 80K is probably the average mileage of a dead car from the mid-late 90's but in the uk we do a lot of town driving and no one really takes care of cars properly so 6-figure mileage is rare, unless it's a diesel those always seem to last way longer.
