I took that in 2020 and it messed me up big time and I’m still trying to recover from the same side effects. Because the doctors haven’t been able to figure it out. After taking nitrofurantoin, I ended up with awful back pain, muscle pain, nerve pain and stomach problems. Gotten an mri, ct scan, ultra sounds, x rays and even did physical therapy and nothing. Been hell after I took that dumb antibiotic. I haven’t been able to work out because if I do, I’ll go weeks with a bad flare and back pain and nerve pain. Fast forward to 2022 and I gave up seeing all specialist and am now seeing a regenerative medicine doctor and will be using red light therapy beds. Hopefully that and other therapies will help me.
My wife is 34+ weeks pregnant.
She has UTI and her Docter prescribed nitrofurantoin 100mg for 14 days.
Is it safe to take it for 14 Days???
Did she take the noteofurantoin tablet?
I am 18 weeks pregnant and was prescribed macrobid 100mg twice a day . Is it safe

Is your baby born ? Was baby healthy and fine?
Hi Chris, Thankyou for your video which is really interesting. Do you know the percentage the risk increases for heart defects, by taking nitrofurantoin in weeks 5-9 of pregnancy? Or are u able to give ur personal opinion on what the research looks like? I’m thinking of postponing taking nitrofurantoin until after 9 weeks (currently 7) but not sure which holds the highest risk (waiting or taking). My UTI symptoms are minimal and my urine results come bk in a week. Many thanks in advance 😊
I would definitely still take the medication. The risk of not treating the UTI would be absolutely terrible. Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid) has not be associated with general increase in major malformations when Goldberg paper took a bunch of papers that combined all the results (39 268 cases of major malformations and 129 394
controls). Now when you specifically only look at a rare malformation of the heart, (hypoplastic left heart syndrome) there did show to be an increase in the risk. General baseline risk is 1 in 100,000. From the Goldberg paper, the odds ratio is suggested to increase to 3 in 100,000. Now with all that being said, if a patient has a UTI during her pregnancy (even if the patient does not have symptoms of urinary frequency, pain with urination, or burning sensation when urination), then they completely need to be on antibiotics to get rid of the bacteria. I hope this helps!
@@ScienceWithChris Chris, I really appreciate your detailed response very much. Thankyou for taking the time!
@@ginellie123 hi, was your baby okay? I am currently 4 weeks pregnant and have been prescribed this medication. I am so worried, please let me know
I’m breastfeeding and prescribed with this medication. My Doctor advised me not to breastfeed however my baby now is very moody due to teething and started to refuse any other milk. She inly wants my milk. Is it safe to breastfeed while taking pms-nitrofuran?
to answer your question: in the absence of G6PD deficiency, the use of nitrofurantoin has been classified as compatible with breastfeeding.
I’m about 2/3 weeks pregnant and just started nitrofurantoin should I be considered of taking this antibiotic right now as this is when the baby starts developing, I’m really stressed out hearing these side effects
Hi Tamlyn, my name is omou ba and I was wondering if your baby is okay after taking this medication. I am currently 3 weeks and have been prescribed it and I’m so worried. Please let me know
Apparently I have asymptomatic UTI and was given these pills 100 mg. After taking them for the first time, I started to feel abdominal pain. I am 16 weeks going to 17 weeks pregnant. I am worried about losing my baby
the abdominal pain could be a transition from asymptomatic to a symptomatic UTI. Other causes for abdominal pain include GI issues which can include but are not limited to constipation, gas pain, or diarrhea. I would follow up with your primary OB for further questions.
Was your baby okay?
was your baby healthy and fine??
macrobid is not in pharmacy qattar whyy
So I'm 39 weeks pregnant tomorow and I was given this med by mfm specialist I've took two pills yesterday but saw this now scared
I hope you and the baby are fine now...
I’m 7-8 weeks currently and my doctor did a dip test and it came back with white blood cells and she prescribed me the generic for Macrobid. I just did a quick google search and read a few of the scary things. I’ve decided I don’t want to take it out of precaution especially given how far along I am. Does this seem reasonable?
Thanks for the comment! I would follow your doctor's recommendations. If concerned, I would bring up any research to the provider. Asymptomatic UTIs during pregnancy definitely should be treated.
I would have asked for a full lab urine M/C/S to determine if you truely have a UTI. Dipstick really isn't enough to make that call! Good anti-microbial stewardship means identifying the correct antibiotic for the microorganisms
I am 12W 6D and just got prescribed macrobid for asymptomatic UTI I am high risk due to suboxone use I am very scared I don’t want to have a MC I’ve heard horror stories of woman having a MC after being half way through or close to their last day or antibiotic courses. And I’m terrified
