The Great, Unnamed Cinema Genre: Koyaanisqatsi and the “Experiential Documentary”

- Koyaanisqatsi is a powerful example of a very specific kind of film, but it is by far not the only example of it and not even the first of its kind. This distinct type of filmic experience has a long history in cinema. Strangely, though, this sub-category of the documentary has distinct traits and elements that appear in other films, yet there has been no attempt to codify these films into a single genre or subgenre, as is frequently the case with cinematic works. How is it possible that there is a clear and distinct subgenre of film that has simply never been named?

hey great job with the video sir. enjoyed.
"WorldView" The top down aspect of these films need a broader name/theme. Either that or "God Mode".
There’s a movie called samsara from 2011 and it’s like koyaanisqatsi. It has a bunch of robots and Asian style modern technology.
Directed by the cinematographer of Koyaanisqatsi and director of Baraka
Awesome video for a magnificent film. Definitely taking your idea and calling these types of films "Qatsi Films" from now on :)
Local phanamanan my word. I remember when LA worshiped this. We R like kinda nuts anyway. :)
Any chance we could get a list of the films spoken of. Maybe a couple that weren't that are just like koyaanisqatsi? =)

I don't fully agree that there has been "no attempt to codify these films" , I did my own research into this general kind of film and for example there does seem to be qualifiers as to what an absolute or abstract film is and what pure cinema is. Although to support your point also, many of these terms can very easily be used interchangeably.
Alternatively, saying "non-narrative film", which seems to be the absolute broadest category for all of these films, has its own problems. For example, don't we watch a film like Koyaanisqatsi, the absolute journey that it is, and spin our own narratives from it? Some report it as an ode to technology, others an environmental film, sometimes I watch it through a political lens and see it as a visual explanation of neoliberalism. Wouldn't that mean multiple-narrative would be a better term than non-narrative?
On a side note, if someone attempted to write the definitive book explaining all this, would that even be a good thing? Could our need to categorize and genre-fy it just be restricting?
So many questions. But the only thing I can confidently say on this topic is that there needs to be more discourse on it.
I believe I've created a sub genre experiential film
Horrible to watch. The AR is all over the place.
The hell you mean?
